Bridget interviews New Orleans’ last traditional voodoo priestess and discovers the woman’s powers are genuine due to her interaction with one of two rival alien species which have been mining Earth’s previous metals since 10,000 BCE. The dying priestess gives Bridget a talisman which enhances her abilities. She later learns the talisman has other effects on her as she tries to use the alien tool to her advantage. Later volumes in the Children of Rival Gods series explore the two alien races. One appears human and they were mistaken as gods when they encountered Bronze Age people. They select and recruit agents as adults from the English speaking populations. The other alien race appears reptilian and seems to swim through our atmosphere. Their repulsive appearance required them to recruit a breeding population of 2,000 humans by “rescuing” (never say kidnap!) promising toddlers from the human population, which they have maintained since then. Both sides try to continue mining Earth’s metals in secret, but the two races find it difficult to co-exist peacefully since their war in the skies of Earth 10,000 years ago, which is recorded in many cultures across the globe. An uneasy peace exists in the current day, but as human events evolve, they can’t resist interfering.

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...
