Chapter 1

The world as I knew it had failed me or so I thought. The man I loved had up and left me. For all I knew he was across the world for all I cared. He left me with nothing.

He came to me with nothing to his name and left with everything to my name. What more could a woman handle. I know before you say it, “why did you put up with it for so long?“. Well love does a funny thing to your heart.

It all began when I was young. I didn’t know any better. Let’s just say I was young and dumb. Me being what we call today as ignorant and full of dreams.

I was a young girl who wanted nothing but to make something of myself. I set out to find the job of my dreams. I had college experience and I was smart.....well to an extent. My parents always said when you look hard enough you will find it.

That is exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to look hard and do well. I laugh at myself when I remember how everything I just said flew out the window of a warm summer day.

I was working at an arcade when I was told that a boy was staring at me. I blushed and shyly turned to see what boy was looking at me.

He was tall slim and muscular. His eyes were hazel with a touch of green. My heart beat started to go crazy! This guy was absolutely breath taking.

I turned away and looked in the mirror. What I saw was a frazzled young woman just starting this job and just dressed in the uniform they had given me. My hair was pulled back into a ponytail and light makeup.

What in the world was this guy looking at me for? I turned slowly back around and he was leaning on the counter I was working at. “The name is Shane... and you are?” he asked.

“Well my name is Ann.“, I said. I looked at him a bit more. He had a very strong jaw line and those eyes could pierce even the hardest of hearts. I couldn’t breathe.

“Well Ann what are you doing this weekend?” he pondered. I had no plans at all but I didn’t want to tell him that. “Well I have to work,” I said. “Okay, well how about after work?,” he asked.

The thing is I worked from 11am to 12am. I had long hours and I needed my sleep. “Well I generally go home and sleep,” I replied. He laughed at that.

“How about we make a date of it then?“, he asked sending me one of the most devilish smiles. I blushed again but he seen it that time. His eyes went a deeper shade of green. I wanted to dive into the floor and never get back up.

“Well I’ll have to take a raincheck on that if you don’t mind,” I said timidly. Shane smiled again and said that he didn’t mind at all. He casually lifts his 6 foot frame off the counter and winks at me before stepping away from the counter.

I didn’t see him again for a few days. Until I was busy getting a quarter jam from one of the game machines. I was bent over and heard a soft whistle from behind me.

I quickly turned around and it was him. He was dressed in a pair of blue jeans and a red t-shirt. He had a baseball cap on today and he was looking good.

Me again in work uniform. What exactly did he see in me? I had my hair down today and was flowing down my back. I brushed the few stray hairs from my face and looked at him.

He just stood there and smiled at me. Oh man....I wish I could just melt away at his smile. He steeped forward and gave me a single rose. My hands shaking I reach for the rose.

I finally obtain the rose in my hands and bring it to my nose to sniff the flower. It smelled heavenly. “My mom grew it in her garden,” he said.

He looked down at his feet and shuffled them awkwardly. “It’s beautiful,” I manage to say. He looks back up with another heart stopping smile.

“I was wondering if we could go for a coffee or soda on your next break?“, he asked. I looked at my watch and I was due for a break in around 10 minutes.

“Okay, I’ll meet you at the snack place just outside in ten minutes”, I replied. I had not even thought of putting makeup on today. I looked a mess. I wondered what he wanted to talk about.

My break was not that long and I would hate to get into a long conversation with him and not be able to continue it. That 10 minutes took to long and forever to get there.

The manager finally came up and let me go. I went out to the snack place and he bought me a soda. I didn’t drink coffee. He ordered a soda as well.

I guess the original thing to ask for was coffee when getting to know someone.

“So....how’s your day going?“, he asked raising the soda to his lips to take a drink. “Well it is going pretty good so far. Can’t say anything bad.” I replied.

“What do you do for fun ?,” he shot back with. “Well I really don’t have much time for fun really.” I said. “I go to work then come home and sleep and then repeat.”

“You need to learn to have some fun and excitement,” he said. I could hear some people very close say to come on because they had to go. I looked at Shane and he seemed annoyed.

Apparently he was not alone here. “Can I have your number so we can talk?,” he asked. “Sure,” I said.

I then took his phone and put my number in his phone. I snapped a picture and saved it as the profile picture.

“Okay you can text too if you want. But if I don’t answer right away then I’m busy” I said. ” Okay”, he answered.

He took his phone and stuck it in his pocket and picked up his soda and waved to me before taking off to his friends. I didn’t even get his number. He got mine though. The ball was in his park now.

I went back from my break staring off in the direction he had taken off to. In the park we also had go carts so he may have went over there for a little while.

I spent the rest the day wondering if he was going to call me. Later that night as I’m about to go home and my phone goes off. I swipe up on the phone to unlock it and see a text.

I quickly open the text and find it to be a text from him.

Shane: Hey what’s up? It's Shane.

Me: Not much just getting off from work.

Shane: Good then we can talk for a while?

Me: Well I have to drive home remember?

Shane: Oh yeah....right...well will you text me when you get home?

Me: Yeah i sure will....talk to you soon.

Shane: Be careful!

Me: I will.

That was the end of the texting season for the moment. I looked at my phone and thought. I couldn’t believe he texted me! He actually texted me! I quickly saved his number.

I was in a daze as I drove the 45 minutes home. I had not told him how long it takes me to drive home. He was probably going to be asleep when I got home.

I walked in the house to hear the house alarm chirp. I was tired all I wanted to do was take a shower and go to bed. But I had promised Shane I would text him. So I did.

Me: Just got home gonna take a shower real quick then we can talk.

The blinker blinked for a couple of minutes before a reply came through.

Shane: Ok talk soon.

I quickly washed my hair and body and rinsed out the shampoo and body wash off. I wrapped a towel around me and walked from the bathroom back to my bedroom. I picked out my favorite soft night time sleepwear. Yes I still wear jammies. Don’t judge. It’s comfortable. I dried my hair and and brushed it out. I put it into a lose pony tale and slipped under the covers. I picked up my phone and checked to see if he had texted me while I was in the shower. I saw one waiting text message. It read:

Shane: I hope your shower feels nice.....

I was like ok...I wrote back...

Me: yes it was very nice are you still awake?

It didn’t take but a second for him to answer back.

Shane: Yeppers I am still awake!

Me: Oh good....im so sleepy..

Shane: I’m not hehe!

Me: lol! How come?

Shane: Want the truth?

Me: Always.

Shane: I have been waiting to text you all day.

Me: really?

Shane: Yeah.....

Me: Awwww!

Shane: How was the rest of your day?

Me: It was bearable but not to much more exciting

Shane: It would have if I had been there....

Me: I am sure it would have been.

Shane: Well I would have at least made you laugh or smile.

Me: Very true. I really hate to cut this off but I'm so tired. I got to go to bed now.

Shane: I understand. I’ll let you go for now. Goodnight!

Me: Goodnight.
