Chapter 1: Hell is a Suana
I thought being here would help me gain a peace of mind, but somehow I find trouble or it found me more or less. Go to the county, they say. You’ll find yourself, they said. Bullshit. I hear large footsteps above me and grab my shotgun and knife. I prepared myself, aiming steadily at my door.
~ The week before~
Jesus, it’s fucking hot. Fanning myself, I continued to work on my computer. It was over 90 degrees in New York and I was..... highly irritated. “Isabelle, you almost finished with that retouch? We got to get those in by Friday.” I work at a fashion photography firm as a photo editor and, for the most part, it’s a fun job; I get to go to beautiful places, look at exclusive content, and meet talented and amazing people. However, it's still a busy and demanding job that requires all my time and energy.
“I’m almost finished. I just need to adjust the lightning some.” The photo showed a dark-skin woman sitting in a field of flowers in a gorgeous lavender dress while the sun’s warm rays shined on her. Trying to adjust the lighting, I couldn’t help but admire the photo. The yellow tulips contrasting her dress, the model doing a very laid-back pose as the sun found home with her. However, that only distracted me a bit as I came back to reality.
“Isaac, why isn’t the air conditioner working!?”
“I’m not sure but at this point, it it doesn’t start in the next 5 minutes, then I’ll send everyone home,” he said, while he kept banging the air conditioner. As I continued to work, my friend and coworker, Alexis, peeks through my office. “Soo, I’m not the only one melting in this office or?”
“No, you're not the only one.” I don’t know if it’s the fatigue of getting this work done or the heat, but I can’t focus. “FUCK!” I slammed my mouse. Alexis jumped, shocked at my reaction. “I need a vacation.” I slumped in my chair in defeat. “Don’t you have that vacation home or whatever?”
“Eh, yeah, but’s in the middle of of nowhere and I actually want to be surrounded by people.” My parents owned this cabin somewhere in Pennsylvania for many years, way before I was even thought of. However, I don’t know why they would purchase it since in the middle of east bumblefuck. “Well, maybe you shouldn’t be around people for a while,” Lexis rebutted. “Shit, I can come with you if you like.”
“Nah, it’s fine. I’ll think about it.” After 5 minutes went by, I left work and decided to finish my work at home. The noisy life of NY is very much overwhelming and anyone sane enough would want some type of quiet solitude. It’s me. I’m anyone. Also, I didn’t mind having a clean place to live as my apartment is damn near mouse-infested.
It’s not that I don’t clean, as I’m a very tidy person and take much pride in that, but my neighbors, not so much. One time, a mouse ran across my bedroom with a French fry. Mind you, I did not have any. Should I take off for a week? Work has been hectic for the past month, with people wanting to get in autumn theme photos and such. stomped, I weigh in my pros and cons; pros are I can be by myself with no deadline coming for me, no anxiety inducing situations, maybe meeting new people, just pure peace and quiet. Cons are the cabin gets creepy at night and I have to shoo away wild animals. I mostly get kidnapped and killed or I will unknowingly meet a serial killer. Either way, I’m screwed.
However, that peace tho.
Fuck it, I’m going.
As the day faded, I booked my week off and snuggled into my bed. I’m going to relax, even if it kills me; Next Monday can’t come any sooner. The week went by as soon as it came, which made me excited but nervous. Will it be a waste of time? What if something bad happens? Stupid questions I know, but hey, I’m a black woman traveling by myself, I gotta take extra precaution. Friday, I packed up most of my bags and put them in my closet to keep away my mess in a distant room. "What else am I missing?" I muttered. I scan my room and from the corner of my eye, I see my tall dresser that's between my bed headdress and my window.
On top of it was a mess of hair care products, some that fell, and some that were standing up. "Hair stuff!" I ran to my kitchen to get the big ass plastic zip up bags and stuff the bag with moisturizer, conditioner and shampoo. I know my mom probably has hair stuff, but this is just in case. After I got everything, I stuff my bag in the closet and called it a day.
The special day came, and I was none the happier. I put on my clothes, got my bags out of the closet, and headed downstairs. The cute old lady, Ms. Eve, came up the stairs while I was coming down.
"Good Morning Ms. Eve, how are you?"
"I'm doing well, dahling and I see you got those bags. You going somewhere on this fine day?" She exclaimed.
"I'm staying at a cute little cabin, so I can get some peace and quiet."
"Ha, I know that's right! Well, I won't hold you, but be safe and enjoy your vacation."
"Thank You!" I smiled and waved goodbye while I struggled to get my bags down. "Oh, and don't forget to pack bear spray and mace! You do'nt know what nasty people or things you might meet!" Ms. Eve shouted. "Dont worry, I got it!" I yelled. Ms. Eve smirked and walked away. Besides my grandmother, Ms. Eve is one of the sweetest old lady I've met and she's got one of the cutest southern accents I've heard. But she is right, though. I gotta get some protection.
After I got my bags out the door, I rummaged through my pockets to find my car keys. My 16-year-old Pontiac has got me through some bad times. Granted, she's not the best car in the world, but she's my 4lifer and she's kind of all I got. I stuffed my bags in the back seat of my car; I got in my car, turned on my keys, and put on my seatbelt. " Ok, Colombia County, let's see whatcha got".
