A worthy successor to the first book
"I really liked the first book, so I was hesitant to start this one. It's almost always a letdown to start something new after being immersed in another plot. The choice of focusing on a seeming villain from the previous book was a bold one, but ultimately I like this book even more. I'm a total sucker for character redemption arcs. The story picks up almost immediately from the end of the first book, but from another character's POV, so that helped some with continuity. There are some fairly dark parts of this story, in a pretty bleak universe (much more so than the first book), so mind the warnings on the first page and at the top of the chapters. But I've read much worse, and didn't think this was gratuitous- it all served to illustrate what the characters have to deal with, and why they are the way they are. If anything, I would have liked to have seen more of that towards the end of the book- the major plot resolution almost went by too fast, and there were a few plot lines that I thought could have been explored more. It was nothing jarring or inauthentic for the story, and in fairness, I didn't want the story to end. But it was a contrast to the beginning of the book, where the plot moved much more slowly. (And for good reason there- breaking down the MC's walls after that much emotional damage needed to take a long time, or it wouldn't seem real.) Someone mentioned there was too much smut. I disagree on that. It seemed authentic to the characters, and I didn't find it repetitive or a drag on the story. But as long as there's a plot, I don't think any amount would bother me, so take that FWIW. Technically, the writing seemed pretty good, and I binge read it in a couple of days. There are some grammar issues ("there" vs "their"), but it's pretty consistent throughout, so it wasn't hard to ignore and didn't pull me out of the story. There were few if any times where I had to backtrack and re-read a passage to figure out the meaning of something. In short, I *highly* recommend this (after reading the first book), if you can deal with the dark subject matter long enough to get to the HEA. Hopefully there are more books coming in the future that check in on these characters."

"Another wonderful story in this series. Well written with lots of drama, violence and erotica; there was so much erotica that I became a little desensitised but that is probably me! A really great second book in this series and can’t wait to read the third. I haven’t checked whose story it is but I’m rather hoping it’s Torres….. although Williams’ would be interesting as well. A definite must read!"

"This is a great redemption for Simone. She was not at all likable in the first Shores story. We get to see why she is awful and jaded. It's not a easy story as many heartbreaking and awful things happen to her. Caden is the fresh air she needs to show her that this life is not the end for her. A fight for their life and love is worth all the high risk. I'm glad they get their HEA."
