1. Jolt

Liv and Maddie.

It’s not that I hate the show; hate is too strong a word. It’s funny, but cheesy most of the time. I don’t know what Ebuka and Somto see in it. Unfortunately for me (and fortunately for them), it is not my turn to control the TV remote. So it’s either I watch it, or I go to bed. I decide to sit back and endure the cheesiness, but before I know it, the electricity distribution company (commonly called NEPA), cut off their supply. I don’t know why, but I feel better, and I and my siblings bask in the darkness; we did not remember to bring down a lamp with us.
“Chinedu!” My dad soon yells from upstairs. “Are you with lamp?”
“No!” Ebuka answers.

Before my sister – Maranna, can bring down a lamp, NEPA reconnects the electricity supply. I hear her huff in annoyance. I want to tell her to bring the lamp either way, but I don’t. Five minutes barely pass, and they cut off the supply again. From upstairs, I hear my mum mumble something about Nigeria and how lost we are. Again, we enjoy the darkness and nobody upstairs bothers to bring us a lamp. Less than a minute later, they reconnect supply again. I see these people want to burn electrical appliances in this house. Suddenly, the bulbs in the room fluctuate, and the stabilizers start to freak out. After a short while, the whole thing normalizes; the stabilizers don’t freak out anymore, and the bulbs stop fluctuating. I know Ebuka and Somto are thankful that it stopped so that they can continue watching TV. But I don’t want to watch Liv and Maddie again this night, so I start heading out of the parlor to climb up to my bedroom.
That’s when the fluctuation starts again, worse than before. The light bulb becomes dangerously dim, and rises back dangerously high. I’m already running towards the change-over box behind the door of the lobby before my dad shouts at me to change off the electricity supply. My palm wraps around the rubber part of the change-over lever, and in my rush, some of my fingers slip onto the metal part. Normally, that wouldn’t be a problem, because the metal part is coated with an insulating material. But immediately I move the lever to the ‘off’ position, I feel a surge through me. My body starts to vibrate violently, and I feel my heart will beat out of my chest ‘cause its beating really fast. I can’t place my hands on what is going on, and I begin to feel warmth, then I get hotter and hotter, all accompanied by pain all over my body. I am lifted off the ground, and I think I’m screaming, but I can’t hear anything; I can’t feel anything anymore. You know how magnets make airplane controls go haywire, yeah, picture that. I think I’m going to die, because the first thing I finally feel is intense pain, then scorching heat. I was light-skinned, now I’m literally black. My clothes have been charred to dust. Finally my eyes droop closed, as my body lays heaped on the floor.
