“Celebrate good times, come on! It’s a celebration!”
I groaned. I had been having a wonderful dream about a family picnic until my alarm clock on my phone ruined it by waking me up. Face still squashed on the pillow, I searched blindly for my phone with my hand. I finally felt the phone screen and picked it up, slowly lifting my head to look at the screen. I stared at the screen and saw a text from my mom.
‘Had to go on a business trip, be back Monday. Leftovers in the fridge.’
I sighed they always went on business trips. I checked the date. Friday, November 29, 2021.
‘One more day, Addison.’ I tell myself.
I force myself to get up and walk to my dresser. I switched on the light. “JAYDEN GET UP!!!” I yelled at my little brother, who was still snuggled up in his blanket. He jumped, startled from my loud voice.
“Oh my god! Keep your voice down!” He yelled at me. I grinned. “Get up! Get ready for school.”
“No!” He buried his head under the blanket.
“It’s friday, come on!”
“Have mom wake me up!”
“Mom and dad are on a business trip!”
“Ugg!”
“You know you're 14 now, I shouldn’t have to wake you up like this.” I complained.
“Yah, so? You’re still older than me.”
I looked at him in annoyance. “Fine, don't get up, but don’t blame me when you miss the bus!”
“You can drive me to school.”
“No, I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“Because I would just kick you out, and make you walk. Now are you going to get ready or not?”
“Fine, but you owe me.”
“I don’t owe you anything.” I said, turning back to my dresser.
I got my clothes and walked into the bathroom.
When I got to school I headed to my locker where my best friend Brayley was waiting for me.
“Hey.” She greeted me.
“Hey.”
“So did you hear?”
“Hear what?” I asked her, confused.
“Laserbeam just took in Chilly.”
“Cool.” Laserbeam was our town's own superhero. He showed up a few years ago and stopped a couple of robbers from robbing a bank. He can shoot lasers out of his eyes and flies around saving everyone. But like every superhero movie there is, when there’s a superhero, there’s a super villain too.
Chilly and Laserbeam are archenemies. Chilly can shoot ice and somehow acts calm during the fights. Laserbeam hasn’t captured Chilly until now.
“I hear they're sending him to a security prison especially made for supers!”
“They have a prison like that?”
Brayley shrugged, her straw blonde hair rolling off her shoulders. “They’re rumors, but they could be true.”
Brayley kind of reminded me of chilly, well, except for him being evil and having super powers, but they both can act calm and chill even in the most hectic situations. Brayley lived on the farm, in fact, she grew up on a farm. Riding horses, playing in the forest across from the back of her house, she always acted tough. She was 16 just like me and we have been friends for about 4 and a half years now.
The bell rang and I quickly grabbed my stuff, and said bye to brayley before running off to class.
The bell rang signaling the end of school. I grabbed my phone from the pocket of my favorite navy blue and white striped jacket, and looked at the screen and saw a text from Levi, one of my friends from school.
‘Meet me at Lori's Diner. Got something BIG to show you!’
I texted him back and told him I’d be there around 4 and walked out of school.
I walked home and decided to take a shower, I always felt dirty after P.E. After I got out I put on some black sweatpants and my black star wars shirt. I left a note telling Jayden that I would be right back and not to eat any extra snacks while I was gone, even though I already knew he would grab some anyway. I grabbed my purse and pulled out of the driveway in my old red Chevrolet, and drove to the cafe. Kathy’s cafe is a cafe famous for teens, especially high schoolers. They always treated the customers right and their food was amazing. It is also famous because they give jobs to any teens that need money, helping tons of families.
I pulled up into the parking lot and found an empty spot to park. I walked inside the cafe and looked around. Levi was sitting in one of the corner seats waving at me.
I trotted over and took a seat.
“Sup.”
“Hi, so what is it you wanted to show me?” I asked. Levi was a cool friend to have. He loved to invent machines and concoct chemicals and stuff. His main dream is to become a famous scientist and inventor. Levi had black curly hair that always bounced when he walked, and his face was dotted with freckles. He had brown eyes and a smile that had the most evilest villains smiling back. Even with his looks he didn’t play much sport and would rather stay inside doing sciency stuff. He also had a very kind and passionate personality.
“I think I finally got it!”
“Got what?” I asked as I watched a waiter come towards us.
“I’ve been to every crime scene and collected all the DNA I just needed to figure out the-!”
“Sorry to interrupt, but are you ready to order?” A waiter, a boy about 17-18, asked us.
“Uh, yes, I’ll just have a chocolate milkshake.” I replied.
“I’ll have a cheeseburger, no pickles, and some fries.” Levi told the boy. The boy nodded jotting down our orders on a small notepad, before scurrying off.
“As I was saying-I just needed to figure out the formula-and I think I finally got it!”
“Got what exactly Levi? What do you mean about crime scenes and DNA?”
“I didn’t tell you? Well I’ve been collecting DNA from all the crime scenes where supers have fought, and have been studying them and how they work-”
“Isn’t that illegal?”
Levi smirked. “Not unless I get caught.”
I smiled.
“Anyway I have so many questions in my head, but the main one that stands out the most is how do they get their power?”
“Laserbeam was shocked.” I said, shrugging my shoulders.
“Yes, that's the story, but how did he get it? How did that shock give him powers? There are a lot of people that get shocked by a lot of things. But did they get powers? No!”
A girl came up to us holding our food. “Here ya go.” She said in an accent that reminded me of a cowgirl.
“Thanks.” We both said grabbing our food.
“Welcome.” She said before walking off.
I took a sip of my milkshake. “So. . . you're trying to-what? Find out what they're made of, or something?”
“Not exactly. . .”
I looked up at him and saw him giving me puppy dog eyes. I was confused until I realized what he wanted me to do. “Oh no. No, no, no, no!”
“Please?!”
“You know what happened last time! I’m not taking the risk again!”
“I turned you back!” He pleaded with me.
“You turned me into a pig!”
“That was once!”
I glared at him. “Okay, twice.” He confessed. “But I didn't mean too!”
“I mean it! No is a no.”
He huffed, “I'll buy you pizza and milkshakes any time you want.” I perked up.
“That, and do my chores for two weeks.”
“Fine.”
“Yes! Now what exactly do you want me to try out?”
“Well. . . actually, you already tried it out.” He said, looking down.
“What?”
“I put it in your drink.” I looked down at my milkshake that was empty.
I slowly looked back up at him. “Levi Doogan! What did you do?”
He chuckled nervously.
“What is it?” I asked, staring daggers at him. People might think that I’m overreacting, but I am not! He put that thing in my drink! Without my permission! Wait a second. . . “How did you get it in my drink?”
“I bribed a worker.” I, so, wanted to kill him right now.
Before I could attack him Lori, the owner of the restaurant, walked up to our table. “Addison! Levi! How ya doing?” Lori was a sweet lady in her 50’s. Even if she’s grown in age, she still is a stunning woman. She has long brunette hair running down her back and kind green eyes. She was always kind toward everyone including us. It was sad when her husband passed away, but she always seemed to be happy all the time. We were also regulars, I would come here all the time after school or on the weekends.
“Hey lori.” I said, sweetly to her.
“I’m doing good right now, but I might not live to see another day.” Levi joked.
I glared at him.
He sunk in his seat trying to hide from me.
“What did you do?” Kathy asked Levi, giving him the ‘don't lie to me look’.
“I may or may not have put something in Addison’s drink that might or might not have given her the powers of a superhero.” Levi said nervously.
“What?!” Me and Kathy cried in unison.
Suddenly the glass shattered in my hand. I cried out and dropped the remaining pieces of glass on the table. They both stared, shocked at me. “Super-strength.” Levi whispered his face still in shock(ed) mode, before his features twisted into a wide smile. “I did it! I have finally figured out how to create superpowers! This is the greatest thing I’ve ever done! I’ll be famous! I have to tell-!” He paused, then looked at me, then suddenly his face dropped. “I can’t tell anyone.”
“I’m so confused right now.” I said to no one in particular.
Kathy turned to us. “Listen I got to-”
She was interrupted by a small girl that came up to our table. “Maam’ I’m sorry to interrupt, but the cooks need you in the kitchen.” She said looking nervous.
“Thank you Bella, I'll be right there.” Kathy said, smiling kindly at her. The girl hurried off after we heard a customer calling for her.
“Listen, I have to go. But do not tell anyone you don’t trust! I'll explain everything later, but please trust me on this!” She said, before hurrying off putting on a fake smile.
We both stared at her back, confused.
“So, uh, this is my power?”
“Well, actually, I, uh, made it to where there would be two or more powers, I-I’m sorry.”
I sighed. I was really mad at him, but I just didn’t have the energy to do anything to him.
“I forgive you. Just-never do anything like this again.”
Levi smiled. “Alright. I promise.” I smirked.
“Uh oh.” Levi said fearfully, looking at me uneasily.
“You owe me some pizza, but first I want a milkshake.” Levi groaned.
“Anyway, how do we find out all my powers?”
Levi grinned. “I think I can help with that."
