Chapter 1
Moving has never been easy for anyone. I was probably very wrong thinking it would be way too easy to move away from London. I have always been an introvert. I didn’t have many friends back there. It was just Alexander and Bree, who were also a couple of lonely kids before we got together for high school, a year before I had to move to this small Alaskan town, Girdwood.
It was a beautiful town and for my good deeds, with a very very small number of people. I wasn’t much of a crowdy person, so a small town did me good. There was nothing left in London after my grandma passed away leaving me, Jean and my younger sister Madison to a distant aunt Lola, who was called Miss Jenkins in Girdwood.
Lola had a beautiful custom logged home near to the woods beside a small stream river. And she was more than welcoming when we arrived mourning our grandmother. She had our rooms set up for us before we even set foot in this town. She also owned a grocery shop which I had to help her with , as a courtesy of course.
Lola was generous enough to set us up for a local school, which was closed due to Christmas. Which also gave me this pain of giving her a hand in the shop. Madison was a lucky girl, the younger sister of course, whose responsibility was mine to take. My parents had died in a fire accident in Munich, while they were happily vacationing. Me and Maddie were young enough to understand and not miss them. It was gran who took us in and since we have loved her until she also left us.
And now it was time we started our new lives here in Girdwood. I was super nervous for my first day at school and also I was going in the middle of my semester, which adds to the already miserable life of mine.
“I guess I’ll be shitting my pants in class today!?”. Maddie was being dramatic as usual, but I wouldn’t really blame her since I knew she was scared about the first day at school and so was i. So me being the smarter elder sister, had to share a piece of my courage.
“I’m sure we’ll be good, sweet little.” to which Lola smiled. She liked me more as I was the calm and patient one.
“ Jean, dearest, please call me if you ever need anything and yes, take care of yourself and Madison for me. I’m sure you girls will have a pretty decent day at school today. I’ll see you girls in the evening and we will have a great dinner.”
Lola wasn’t that bad either. It was just us who had to settle down. School was a nice place. By the looks of it, one could say it was ancient enough.
I had history for my first class. And I wish I wouldn’t be sleeping and giving my teacher a bad impression of myself.
Desks were assigned to each student and mine was right next to a brunette girl. She was a mesmerizing young girl with chestnut brown locks below waist, amber almond eyes and a very pretty smile. Damn enchanting. She seemed amazed as I approached my desk, which indeed helped me little with my anxiety.
“ Welcome to Girdwood, Jean. I’m sure you’ll love this place once you are settled through. Oh, where are my manners? I am Rhaya Richards.”. Never in my thoughts had I expected such a warm welcome at school. Rhaya seemed quite a good girl.
“Hi Rhaya, I’m Jean, since you know." The conversation turned pretty awkward. But Rhaya was one talkative female I’d ever come across. But at the end of the day, I made a good, reliable friend. And the rest of my day turned out fine as well, with auntie Lola’s delicious food and Madison’s usual chatter.
