Chapter 1
Luxor at night is, in a simple word, magical. The perfect time is when the sun sets over the West Bank, and the moon takes its place along with the millions of stars over the dark, starry sky. Anyone can see the reflection of this beautiful canvas on the river Nile each evening, shining brighter than the most precious jewels. It’s so romantic that you’ll have to pinch yourself to believe it.
I’ve always found Egypt to be a mystical place, full of positive energy that makes anyone forget about the problems back at home, so why did I feel like a sour cherry dipped in salt?
I am currently having a later dinner at the resort I was staying. The resort is called Anubis Hotel and Resort. The reviews couldn’t do this place justice because it is truly magnificent! It has an excellent location with marvelous views of Luxor Temple and the Avenue of Sphinxes from the terrace of the dining room on the 6th floor, where I am now.
So, you may ask me why I am in such a bitter mood when I am on vacation in a place that so many people yearn to visit. The truth is that I had planned this trip for two people, but fate had other plans for me when my boyfriend of almost four years decided to abandon the journey with me. It had all started with something rather stupid. One month before we would leave for Egypt, he told me that his group of friends had spontaneously arranged an excursion in Florida, and they had bought tickets for a very awaited football game. My ex-boyfriend’s favorite team, to be precise. They were all supports, and my ex had tried to persuade me to let go of the Egypt trip for the Florida one.
I found it substantially scandalous, especially considering we had planned the Egypt trip one year before this sudden Florida one. That’s when we began to argue, rather burningly. I explained how I had already given the advance payment, plus it wasn’t refundable. He had blabbered how his other friend’s girlfriends would be there, but it didn’t impress me. In all honesty, I wasn’t a fan of football, but it was one of my ex passions, so I had supported him about it until this controversy. He could go to a football game anytime! Save to say, the end of this bickering ended up with us breaking up.
Yes, I cried because I had cared a lot for him, and the truth is that I had loved him, but that argument made me realize how caught up he was in his mind and couldn’t take a relationship seriously. If he cares more about a football game and his friends than his girlfriend, so be it. I am better off alone on the Egypt trip than with someone who doesn’t want to be here.
The plate in front of me was empty, and my stomach was full of the delicious course I had savored after a full day of visiting Luxor. I had a good time visiting the Temple of Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, and the Luxor Temple. Maybe tomorrow I will take that Hot-Air Balloon Ride over Luxor at Sunrise.
Swirling the straw in my almost done Molotov cocktail, I sighed. Yes, Molotov cocktail. I know it sounds crazy, but that’s the name of the drink I had ordered. It’s a combination of vodka, whiskey, and rum, on the rocks. The need for some strong alcohol had pricked at my tastebuds, anything to blur the memories of my ex.
The nightly Egypt paradise made me crave affection, to have someone be with me to appreciate it as much as I did. Looking around, I noticed couples at tables, smiling and laughing, becoming all romantic from the warm atmosphere surrounding them like smooth silk. A sigh left my legs, sipping the remains of my drink, letting the rich flavors coat my tastebuds as I glanced at the empty seat in front of me.
“Hello, Miss. I hope you enjoyed the food and drink. Is there I can get anything for you?” My attention got drawn by the polite server who offered me that welcoming smile all the staff seemed to wear. I couldn’t help but smile back, nodding.
“It was perfect, but that would be all. Thank you.” I replied, pulling out five dollars from my purse and giving it to him.
“I thank you, Miss. Enjoy the rest of your night.” He nodded courteously, accepting the tip and leaving. Some tourists have bickered about the tipping practice. Tipping is honestly an unwritten law, and seeing how much these people work to ensure their clients have a good time, they fully deserve it. I have a saying: ‘If you don’t have fifty or so dollars to take with you during vacation for the tips, then better stay at home.’
Glancing at the Nile in the distance, I leaned into my chair, basking in the warm breeze of Egypt, feeling like waves of refreshment coated my tanned skin. I felt at home in this legendary nation the minute I got to the airport. Taking a deep inhale, I felt the woody and musky smell of jasmine, amber, and cedar overwhelm my senses; the tremendous yearning to prolong this vacation coursed through me. When I return to the United States, I shall feel like a wilted flower in the cruel desert.
No! I wasn’t about to think of such depressing scenarios. I am in Egypt and have waited for this trip for over a year. No way in hell will I allow the somber images of my ex to get me down.
After a few more minutes of staring at the night setting, I decided to leave. Sitting up, I left the dining patio and walked down the hallways of the immense resort back to my hotel room.
My eyes couldn’t help but stare intently at the splendid decor of the hotel. The combination of marble white with golden accents and black gave everything an air of royalty. Statues of the Egyptian God, Anubis, were pretty common around this resort; hence, its name of it. The walk back to my hotel room was pretty long. The bedrooms and the restaurants in the resort were in separate buildings, but I didn’t mind taking a long walk after dining. It was refreshing. Right before exiting the building with the restaurants and hotel lobby, there were rows of stores with all kinds of things, from souvenirs to perfumes and clothes.
One, in particular, caught my attention. It was a jewelry store. The proprietor of the jewelry business noticed me staring at his store and approached me quickly with a wide grin.
“Welcome, welcome! Please come in and look at these beauties!” He urged me with welcome arms, motioning me to enter, which I did. My eyes looked around, seeing gold and silver all around.
“Are you looking for something in particular?” He questioned, observing me.
“Uhh. No, not really. I just got drew in, like a call of some sort.” I shyly explained, rubbing the back of my neck nervously.
“Ahhh... a call of the divinity, perhaps?” He joked, walking around the front counter where he had many golden jewels, some of the most precious in the store.
I chuckled, shrugging. “Maybe.”
“I tell you what. I have something special only for you.” He whispered, crouching down to get something from a secret drawer. The man pulled out a jewelry case, overhung with black velvet and golden decorations.
“These are unique ones, for they produced no copies. One of a kind!” He beamed, opening the case with a key and showing me its inside contents.
There were several golden necklaces adorned with Egyptian pendentives. Looking from one to the next, one of them, in particular, drew my attention. My fingers grasped the golden pendant gently, which resembled one of the most famous deities of Egypt: Anubis.
“Ahhh... excellent choice!” The man from behind the counter praised. “Fan of Anubis?”
“To be honest, I don’t know. I cannot say that I have a favorite Egyptian God. All of them are wonderful.” I explained, taking in all the details of the gleaming jewelry between my fingers.
“You know... They say to see Anubis in your dream implies you are searching for clarity. The need for spiritual guidance. He is the lord of the City of the Dead and the guide for the deceased. However, to dream of Anubis represents life, resurrection, and recovery after a good fall.” I listened intently to the man’s fascinating words about the almighty God of the Dead while I admired the necklace.
“How much is the necklace?” I questioned with the curiosity of a child.
“For you, young one? It will be fifty dollars.” He offered, and I debated if I should buy it or not.
“Do it.” A little voice inside my mind whispered persuasively. Nibbling on my bottom lip, I pondered the offer for a few more moments. The thought of not having this beauty around my neck made sadness fill me. It felt so strange.
“Alright. Sounds fair enough.” I replied, and the man smiled wide.
“Perfect!”
Offering him the money for the jewelry after he placed it in a black and gold square casket, we concluded our transactions. I said my goodbyes, thanking him for the offer.
When I stepped outside, I took in a deep breath. One thing I loved about this place was how refreshing the air was. Walking down the marbled path, I admired how the pools that filled the resort looked at night. The water shone like diamonds from the moon and stars. The warm breeze brought an exotic fragrance that made me feel like I could fly and touch the never-ending sky. It was amazing how the simplest of things could create such intense sensations.
I arrived at my hotel room, which was on the twelfth level. I opened the door and walked inside, smiling as I observed the towels organized in two swans kissing and another towel made into a heart on the bed. That’s one of the outstanding features; the resort’s personnel is so kind and inventive. How could anyone not appreciate their services, especially since they made you feel welcomed?
Setting down my purse on the credenza, I entered the bathroom, going straight for a shower after a long day in the sun and sand. Turning the water to a mild warm temperature, I undressed, leaving the clothes on the bathroom floor, and finally, I entered the huge walk-in shower. A long sigh of contentment escaped my lips when the shower spray hit my skin.
My eyes closed as I basked in the feeling, my fingers running through my long honey-colored hair, the wild curls now straight from the water that cascaded over my head. I grabbed the bottle of shower gel off the shower shelf, squeezed a generous quantity into the sponge, and began scrubbing down my body.
The scent of almond and sandalwood filled the shower space, filling my senses in an oriental ambiance that turned my brain into mush; all the negative energy I felt back seemed to dissipate. A smile curled on my lips. A long shower was always the answer to a sour mood. After cleaning my body, I continued with my hair, washing, and conditioning it.
I stayed underneath the shower spray a few more moments, then turned the water off, stepping out and grabbing one of the big fluffy white towels from the rack.
As I carefully dried my body, I looked in the bathroom’s large mirror, and that sour attitude returned as I looked more and more at my reflection. It’s no surprise Josh has abandoned me on this trip. No, I don’t particularly despise myself, but I wasn’t exactly a sight to behold either.
I was 5′5 with an average body to say so; not too skinny, but the curves weren’t present either. My fingers smoothed over the tan lines on my hips, along with the discrete stretch marks. I huffed as I looked down at my chest. Middle-sized B-cups that, with various blouses, I would look like I had no boobs at all.
Exasperation started to fill me, making a groan leave my plump lips. Great, now I was feeling self-conscious for no reason. Running my fingers through my wet hair, I exited the bathroom and saw the little case with the necklace. Opening it, I took the precious accessory and clasped it around my neck. The golden head of Anubis lay above my chest, shining in the dimmed lights of the hotel room.
This little acquisition reminded me of something I put in my luggage in case of an emergency. I could feel the warmness of a blush rising over my cheeks at this. I opened my baggage and began sifting through my clothes until I discovered what I was searching for.
It was a velvet black drawstring pouch with golden details. Opening it with trembling fingers, I emptied its contents onto the royal blue bedsheets of the bed, and I mentally praised myself for bringing my ‘little’ friends on this trip with me.
