Summary

Stay out of trouble? I didn’t realize there was trouble to get into, I thought, opening the book and flipping through it. As I stood there, a cool breeze blew through the room, making me shiver. Juliet Montgomery has always seen herself as average. Or perhaps less than average. All Juliet wants to think about is graduating, summer break, and her upcoming date with Tony. When her mother's fear of Los Angeles stops looking so irrational, her world flips on its head. Pursued by stalkers, Juliet is thrown into a magical world on the brink of civil war. She becomes the center of the attention, and is faced with the choice of becoming the hero everyone expects, or lighting the tinder that sets the world ablaze.

Prologue

“I hate leaving her like this,” she kept her voice low.

“Evelyn, we can’t bring her with us,” the reproach was gentle.

The arm holding her gun dropped a fraction.

“I realize that, Caleb, I just have a nagging feeling that something bad is going to happen.”

Caleb paused, looking around the corner before turning back to Evelyn.

“You say that every time we’re working on a case.”

He could barely see her shake her head in the dark. “This time is different.”

There was a crash to their right, just around the corner.

They nodded to each other grimly, the dim light reflecting off of the badges clipped to their belts. They plunged into the alley on high alert, their motions practiced. The only thing in the alley was a tabby cat.

Evelyn laughed nervously, the barrel of her gun lowering. “Are you the one making all that noise?”

The cat meowed quietly, rubbing against her legs. A faint blue glow lit the alley as Caleb whispered her name.

“What is that?”

Evelyn came to stand next to Caleb as the outline of a door appeared in the alley wall. Evelyn’s eyes widened as she looked between the cat and the doorway.

“They found us,” she whispered.

Caleb’s wide eyes met hers. “I thought that was a dream.”

Her head shook slowly, the door opening before them. There was a soft meow behind them and they started being pushed towards the door.

Caleb grabbed Evelyn’s hand tightly. “What do they want?”

“Our daughter.”

There was a flash of light in the alley, then it was dark again. The tabby sat on top of a trash can, purring as it cleaned its paws. A homeless man stared open-mouthed at the spot where the couple had disappeared.

“Did you see that?” he asked the cat.

The cat smiled.

Kritta_820: I enjoyed the storyline immensely and felt that it devolved from the average "small puny female wolf finds a royal mate." Sometimes the jumps between scenes and plots jumped ahead a little too far for my taste. For example when MC heard the update about her first mate the book suddenly changed to th...

hazel_walker: Okay, this chapter was WILD 😭 The whole werewolf system, the FBIDWC, the discrimination, and the fact that Sylvia has been keeping Collin and Dylan’s situation a secret all came together so well. I especially loved the school chaos and Sylvia immediately going into protective-mom mode. And that end...

I honestly did not love Dev, he had no character growth and no arc I just didnt like who he is as a person and that made it hard to keep going about half way through. Without Jaspers ...

Merrell Bunting: Well written, kind of quiet story, I enjoyed it. I am still a bit perplexed over whether this was a second chance mating story with choosing or completely a chosen mate story. If it is a chosen mate tale it leaves one a bit worried about a fated mate showing up. Either way it was a nice read.
