Summary

Left and right, two opposing sides; fighting for their cause. One who thinks balance is evil, and the other who thinks balance is power; which is right? And is being right, the right thing, after all? Is that what you will strive if that had been you? I welcome you to ponder that question, as the next civil war is about to begin. . . It is crucial for one to lose in order for the other to achieve. This is the legacy passed onto us through Scale of Magic. We are to protect this legacy. It is honorable, respectful, responsible, beautiful, and expected out of us. And we are here today to pass this legacy to the next generation.

Episode 1 - To Be or Not to Be

“But in Old Magic they said balance is power!”

I retort with shining eyes.

“And power is evil, honey”

My mom brush some loose strands of hair behind my right ear.

“As power is evil, so is balance”

My dad does the same to the left.

*Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep*

I grumble and rub my eyes.

‘..I feel groggy....5 more mins.....’

I turn my body to my left.

The clock beeps. Mr. Saxon stands and puts his hands on the table.

“Good morning, class”

He smiles.

“Good morning, Mr. Saxon!”

We stand and reply in sync.

Mr. Saxon straightens his posture and makes an attempt at a serious face.

“It is crucial for one to lose in order for the other to achieve”

He tries to deepen his voice and starts the usual speech.

“It is crucial for one to lose in order for the other to achieve”

And we repeat the exact same lines for the nth time as perfect indoctrinated mobs.

“This is the legacy passed onto us through Scale of Magic”

‘Even Mr. Saxon sounds bored’

“This is the legacy passed onto us through Scale of Magic”

“We are to protect this legacy”

“We are to protect this legacy”

I hear yawns in the back seats.

“It is honorable, respectful, responsible, beautiful, and expected out of us”

“It is honorable, respectful, responsible, beautiful, and expected out of us”

‘It’s good we’re diligent despite stuff though....’

“And we are here today to pass this legacy to the next generation.”

He says, exaggerating some hand poses.

“And we are here today to pass this legacy to the next generation.”

These voices feel distant.

‘I wonder how much longer I can stand this?’

Heavy feelings start to bubble up in my heart.

‘I wish at least I’m brave enough to get my points reduced...’

I feel bitter in my mouth.

“Today we will~”

Mr. Saxon spreads his lips wide and sits in his chair.

“Have a surprise test!”

He makes an eye-smile.

“Again...”

Brian slouches over in his seat.

“Not again!”

“No!!!!”

I squint my eyes.

‘I’m surprised we’re still surprised...’

“..Dammit”

Someone in the back whispers.

‘Bet it’s Jane’

I smirk.

“Calm it down, everyone”

He snickers.

“We have the most sudden practical test, unlike other classes!!!”

Albram stands and crunches her face.

“And~ That’s why you’re the best class”

Mr. Saxon retorts.

‘Sly face = on’

“NO!”

Not stopping, our class retorts like a trained choir.

‘Our class is in perfect sync’

‘..And chaos is refreshing’

A small smile rises on my face.

“Rule 16 in our handbook. I wonder what that is~?”

His cherry voice feels like a lump in my throat.

‘He sure knows how to irritate....’

I feel resigned.

“Right! The teacher in charge governs the class~”

He taps his palm with his fist and makes an amateurish surprised expression.

“You’re the only class that can do this~”

“No worries, you guys always complained, but you always did great”

He chimes while doing another eye-smile.

‘Exactly.’

‘Lucky us, we have such responsible classmates’

I squint.

“Then, we’ll start with Dimitri and Regina”

Mr. Saxon gets serious.

The entire class goes silent, while Dimmy and Reg walk forward and stand near Mr. Saxon’s table, facing each other.

The light passing through the transparent glass shines on their side. They make a fist and raise it up and down.

“Rock paper scissors!”

They say at the same time.

Dimmy makes a rock, and Reg scissors.

“Dimitri will go first”

“Yas!!”

Reg just shrugs her right shoulder.

The floor separates, and the pedestal with a magic ball emerges from it.

Reg stands still, so Dimmy moves and they stand across from each other. They give the usual bow.

Dimmy reaches into his pockets and puts two stones on the right, then a blue magic flower on the left.

Water bursts through his scale’s heart, and the magic ball absorbs it in a second.

“90 points for Dimitri!”

Mr. Saxon shouts as he claps his hands.

“You’ve improved yet again”

He adds.

“Still ain’t better than me”

Reg smirks, and no one dare to counter.

She puts two stones on the right, and a blue magic flower on the left.

Water comes bursting again, and the magic ball drinks it in a second. But not all, some water splashes onto the front seats.

‘This is why first and last are bad’

I giggle like a little devil.

“....Impressive....”

Mr. Saxon is in awe.

“..As always.”

Reg opens her mouth.

“Now, if you will tone down that cockiness”

His eyebrows crunch, and he starts sweating.

“Of course I did~ In your dreams, Mr. Saxon~”

Reg makes hand poses and walks back to her seat.

“...No, you didn’t do that even in my dreams...”

His shoulders lump.

‘He looks beaten up and I can’t stop smiling’

My lips are spread wide.

“Anyway, full points for Regina!”

He raises his head and claps his hands.

“This is your best yet, keep it up~”

“Keep it up”

“Keep it up~”

Both of them are impersonating Mr. Saxon, then the entire class throws a knowing smirk.

‘Scale of Magic’

[Scale of Magic: The Philosophy]

‘The Philosophy’

Those words pop out like giants in my eyes with its big bold font. I sigh, yet my hand is turning its pages.

[Scale of Magic is the philosophy that balance is power, which is also the origin of Old Magic]

‘Scale of Magic is the philosophy that balance is power...’

‘....the origin of Old Magic....’

‘Blah blah blah blah..’

‘I’ve read this all.....the legacy she shared with us all will forever remain...blah blah..after her death, and long after everyone forget..’

‘..That’s all fine and dandy’

‘But even you, are now deceased. I have mixed feelings...’

*Ugh*

‘What answer was I trying to find..?’

I close the book, and with it, I close my question.

For now.

‘Better take a bath..’

.

.

“Scale of Magic is a precious legacy given by nature in order for us to live a better life, with the help of magic.”

I raise my hand as high as I can.

“Yes, Llyris”

“It’s really cool Teach, it also has double meaning since it’s also a philosophy!”

“.....”

“...The philosophy of those Old Magicians, I have to correct you.”

“Who did you learn that from?”

*Ugh*

“I hate that accident. Stop playing in my head...”

I stare at my reflection in the mirror and shake my head.

‘Why did that play out?’

the beginning was good but there were several things that might disturb the reader. for example after a dialogue you start a new line to describe who is talking. then there was a cut of scene but it kind of confused me how she turned around and was in class. maybe you should try describing more and for a scene break there is a line besides B when you are writing your manuscript. use that. and for the thoughts of your character try to use thought or wondered or wished.
