Chapter 1
18 years ago, there was a man who had the mark of ice all over his arm and was immune to ice. There was a woman who had the mark of fire covering her arm, and she was immune to fire. Together they had a child who had both of the marks, but unlike his parents, he could create fire and ice from his hands and not feel a thing. By the age of five, his parents died in a car accident. He was left to live with me, his best friend, and my parents.
His name is Jack, and my name is Jake. My family has a secret too: we can turn into wolves. It is also why Jack and I get along so well. We have a hangout deep in the woods, and that is where we go to practice our abilities. It is this beautiful clearing in the middle of the woods, and in the clearing there is this old treehouse where we spent most of our childhood.
It is Jack’s 18th birthday today, and we are going to celebrate his birthday at the clearing. His parents wanted me to give him this beautiful amulet on his 18th birthday. It has the shape of the sun on it with the shape of the moon inside of the sun. They would have given it to him themselves if you know what didn’t happen. Ok everyone, he is going to be here in about five minutes.
We set up a table for the food and put down covers on the ground so people could sit down. My parents made his favorite type of cake a black forest cake with a layer for each birthday he has had. Once he got there, everyone jumped out and yelled surprise. Once the party was over, I gave him the amulet in a small box with a note from his parents. The note said, “Dear our beloved Jack, we hope you have a great eighteenth birthday. We are sorry we could not be there, but we love you so very much, and once you put on the amulet, all you have to do is say, May the spirit of the wolf protect me as I protect her children. Love Mom & Dad.”
Jack put on the amulet and said the words, and all of a sudden he was wearing a wolf mask and a bulletproof cape. Jack now has the abilities a wolf has, but only when he is wearing his amulet. And then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a meteor the size of a car heading towards the city, so he ran as fast as he could and got to the city just in time to stop it. First he froze, and then he used his fire to disintegrate it. And everyone just stared at him in joy and in fright, happy that he stopped the meteor but scared of what he could do. Then, right as the police showed up, he ran back into the woods.
