Chapter 1

*A/N -

I know that many of you have been anxiously waiting for the sequel to Six Like the Number and I’m sorry it’s taken me this long, but it’s finally well underway! Here is the first peek at the next phase of Six and Axle’s lives.*

*Six’s POV*

“Keller! Dr. Sharp needs you in OR 4!” Dammit, I just sat down.

“What am I looking at?”

“GSW to the chest.”

“Shit,” I mumble to myself before jogging to the scrub room.

When I make it into the OR, I prep all of the tools and the patient gets wheeled in as I see Dr. Sharp scrubbing in. I would be lying if I said I didn’t find him absurdly attractive. The first time I met him, I remember thinking that doctors that look like that only exist in Grey’s Anatomy. McDreamy and McSteamy have some serious competition with Ethan Sharp.

“Oh good, you’re here. This one is going to be pretty rough and everything is so much smoother when you’re in the OR," he tells me and I can't help the pride that flows through me with his words.

I nod in response and we begin the surgery. It’s touch and go at one point but we manage to stabilize the patient. Afterwards, I head to the patient’s room to check on him one more time before my shift ends and when I walk out, I almost run head first into someone and paperwork flies everywhere.

“Shit! Sorry!” I say and bend down to start collecting papers.

“Funny bumping into you here,” the person says. I look up and find Ethan’s hazel eyes staring back at me as he grins.

“Dr. Sharp, hi. I am so sorry about this. I was just-”

“It’s fine, Six. It’s not a big deal. I didn’t really want to do this paperwork anyway. And how many times do I have to tell you to just call me Ethan.”

“At least once more, Dr. Sharp, as always,” I say jokingly.

We stand up and he says, “Did you just quote Pirates of the Caribbean to me?”

“Maybe,” I say and hand him back his papers.

He chuckles and says, “So how’s our patient?”

“He’s looking good, vitals are stable. Thanks to you.”

“Thanks to us, you mean. Seriously, I wouldn’t have been able to do it alone. You were great in there.”

“Thank you. I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given since I got here.”

“You haven’t been given anything Six. You’ve earned it. Anyway, I really do need to get back to work. And if I’m not mistaken, you have someone waiting for you at home.”

I smile as I think about Theo and Axle and say, “I do. Thank you again. Good evening, Ethan,” and then head towards the changerooms.

When I get there, it’s pretty full because it’s right around shift change time and Sam, one of the other nurses who I became friends with at school is already changing out of her scrubs. We’ve become quite close over the last couple years and I was so glad we both got jobs in the same hospital. She looks at me and says, “All tired out after another day as McHottie’s favourite?”

“I’m not his favourite,” I say with an eye roll.

“Oh please. We got here at the same time and I’m still basically a chart bitch and you’re getting specifically requested in trauma surgeries. He never asks for anybody else. You are definitely his favourite.”

“It’s only because he wants in her pants,” Stacey says.

“Oh shut it Stacey. Don’t be jealous because Six is hotter than you.”

She just rolls her eyes, shuts her locker and walks out. Stacey has been trying to get to Ethan for God knows how long. At least since Sam and I got here. She made that very clear on our first day.

“Wait, you don’t actually think that’s the reason right?” I ask Sam.

“No! Of course not! It’s because you’re brilliant and incredible at your job. Dr. Sharp is an excellent surgeon; do you really think he would risk lives just to get some?”

“You make a good point,” I say, nodding my head.

“Although, just to be clear, I do think he wants in your pants, but I don’t think it has anything to do with why he asks for you. Two completely separate issues.”

“Well, that’s irrelevant, as always because I’m engaged.”

“Yes, we know. To your super-hot rock star fiancé. You really could leave some for the rest of us, you know.”

I grin and say, “I’ll keep that in mind for the future.”

We walk to our cars together and then I head home to our apartment. When I walk through the door I hear the sound of cars racing flooding the house. Those two never quit with their video games. I walk up behind them and say, “I swear, one of these days I’m going to put a timer on the internet.”

The game is paused immediately and they both turn around with huge smiles on their faces. This is always the best part of my day. Theo stands up on the couch and turns around to hug me. I wonder how much longer I have until he gets to the phase where hugging me is no longer cool. He’ll be turning 8 in a few months so that point is coming up much faster than I would like it to. He releases me and I say, “Alright, enough using the couch as a stool. Even though it rhymes-”

“Feet don’t go on seats. I know Momma,” he says and then sits back down. Axle stands up and comes over to me, leaning back against the couch and pulls me against him for a kiss. I wrap my hands around his neck.

“Hi baby. How was your day?” He asks me. I swear, everytime he opens his mouth it makes me wanna jump him.

“It was long. Got pulled into an emergency surgery. I’ll tell you about it later,” I say, gesturing to Theo.

“How about you take your shower and I’ll get started on dinner?”

“That sounds wonderful.”

Since we moved in together after high school, I have managed to teach him a few things about cooking. I kiss him gently on the lips again and then head for my shower.

When I get out, I see Theo sitting at the island, doing what appears to be homework and Axle stirring something in front of the oven. I honestly have no idea how I got so lucky with these two. I sit on the stool next to Theo and say, “Whattcha working on?”

“Math.”

“Oh yeah? Do you need any help?” He shakes his head and Axle says, “I already asked him. Apparently he’s a math genius though and doesn’t need any.”

“He doesn’t need your help maybe. You suck at math,” I tease.

“Wow, rude. I’m hurt,” he says and then turns back to the stove.

“Well, if you need any help, you let me know, yeah?” I say and then ruffle his hair.

“Mom! Don’t do that!”

“Sorry buddy, I know you hate that. But I just can’t help myself,” I say as I stand up and walk over to Axle, wrapping my hands around his waist.

“What are we eating?”

“We’ve got some penne and some sausage and veggies and some of the pink sauce you like.”

I giggle and say, “It’s called rosé sauce.”

“I know, I just like hearing you say it,” he tells me and I smile against his back.

“Do you want something to drink?” I ask him and he says, “I’ll have whatever you’re having.”
