Chapter 1

They said the camping trip would be great, we would have fun, maybe push our limits a bit, but it would also bond and connect us on a new level.

I didn’t wanted to do that, I wanted to rent a cabin, to have it comfortable and safe. It could have been so easy.

But well, 2 against 1.

What was I supposed to do?

There was no way I was going to let them camp alone, and I’m pretty sure they knew that.

Anyway. If they had known what was waiting for us in the woods, I’m sure they would have preferred the cabin.

But now it’s too late.

We’re going to have the time of our lives, they said.

We’re gonna rock this, they said.

We’re going to have fun, they said.

Yes.

Sure.

Me and my 2 best friends, camping in the middle of nowhere with no prior experience.

A bad idea.

A really bad idea.

So I tried everything to change their minds, but every counterargument, no matter how logical, fell on deaf ears.

Frustrating as hell.

Renting a hut would have done it, even that would have been new to us. But no, they insisted on the damn camping trip.

Which inevitably made me wonder why I’m even friends with them in the first place.

I mean, I don’t like stupid people at all.

Just as little as wild carnivores, crazy hillbillies, natural disasters and ravenous insects.

It’ll be fine, they said.

We read guides and watched survival shows, they said.

You can’t change our minds, we’ll go camping, with or without you, they said.

Goddamn.

Could I let them go alone?

Samanta, the impulsive endurance athlete among us. No question, with her endlessly long legs and her thin stature she could probably escape from everything. And I’m pretty sure this ability will save her ass at some point, given her penchant for provocation.

And then there’s the petite Kelly, with a stature of a 12 year old, and a very peaceful personality. At least at first glance. In fact, I call her a maneater for a reason. But does her sexual experience help her in terms of self-defense tactics? I hardly believe her pussy is capable of injecting venom and throwing daggers.

Probably not.

Yes, I know, adrenaline and all, but I’m not stupid, nor naive or heartless enough to let them run into their own misfortune.

Someone has to take care of them, and unfortunately, I have always been the voice of reason - or the fist, you might say.

And apart from that, the guilt I would feel for my hole life, if something would happen to them...it would really eat me up.

Well.

Fuck.

And so I lie flat in the mud, now aware of the fact that I should have walked more carefully.

Stupid Mia

Wrinkling my nose, I exhale deeply, suppressing the urge to scream out loud as the earthy taste is filling my mouth.

Note to self: shut your mouth if you’re about to fall!

Not only is my whole body wet from the rain that’s constantly beating down on me, no, now I probably look like a walking lump of pure mud.

Fucking perfect.

Angry and frustrated, I refrain from wiping my face with my hand, which might not help at all, because it is certainly covered in mud, too. At least it feels just as cold, wet and soggy as my face.

Getting up, I feel the mud running down my body, but ignore it as best I can while concentrating on a firm footing. This turns out to be more difficult than I would have thought, because due to the cold, my limbs shiver in an uncontrollable way.

Great, now Im not just a dirty mess, but Im also about to get hypothermic. Good first day!

Damn great.

I just had to pee.

At home I would have gone into my bathroom, but here I have to leave the tent and walk across the large muddy meadow to the edge of the forest, where I have chosen a large fir tree as my personal toilet.

However, now I understand why people used bedpans.

Ignoring my trembling limbs as best as I can, I take two little steps and reach for my mud-soaked flashlight and hold it up so I can see where I’m going.

Because to make matters worse, I can’t even see my own hand without a flashlight. Thanks to the fat rain clouds that completely obscure the moon.

Couldn’t go better.

After a few, much more cautious steps, Im finally at my goal and sigh in relief when I empty my bladder.

But the relief is short-lived, however, because to make matters worse, my mind is tormenting me with a very present question.

Why don’t I have a fucking penis?

It would make so many things so much easier, but knowing full well that my gender can’t be changed - at least not now - I push the thought away and rather concentrate on my little success.

I emptied my bladder without dying - yay!

Feeling a tiny bit better, I head back to the tent.

The closer I get, the more I can hear Samanta’s and Kelly’s snoring. Which, on closer listening, sounds like a mixture of a pug gasping for breath and a chainsaw, immediately triggering impulses in me that couldn’t be more different.

I want to puke and laugh at the same time.

Puke, because I know I won’t be able to sleep, since I have always been a light sleeper.

Laugh, because they surely scare off any living beings in the area, which is actually a really good thing considering the fact that I heard wolves howling. Not once, not twice. No! Fucking 5 times since it’s dark!

Well at least we’re safe then, I mutter to myself as I open the tent and step inside, before making sure that its completely closed.

Shaking my head, I laugh at myself.

As if it makes a difference that the tent is closed. If someone comes to get us, we are at their mercy. This little fabric barrier doesn’t change that at all. My ass. We don’t get wet, and the wind doesn’t whistle around our ears - but that’s it!

Standing in the main tent, which we use to store groceries and to sit around, I first take off my boots before I take off my dirty jeans and jacket.

I toss the dirty laundry next to my shoes and successfully banish the urge to wash them now, that they aren’t stiff and semi-dry yet. I know that would be a wise move, once the dirt dries up it becomes a lot harder to clean up. But I’m tired and I’m cold. So cold that even my teeth are chattering.

Camping sucks!

Wearing only my underwear, I reach for my backpack and pull out a pair of sweatpants and my favorite knit sweater. Putting the sweater on was easy, but my trembling legs make it difficult for me to keep my balance as I try to put on the sweatpans.

I breathe a sigh of relief that I made it without falling on my arse before I climb into my sleeping cabin, where I am greeted by at least 3 mosquitoes and a small spider. But from this point I can’t care less. I’m done. So exhausted that I can’t even manage to kill insects, even though I know that the mosquitoes, these little whorish vampires, want nothing more than to sting me and drink my blood. These fuckers.

My spirit enraged, my body weak, I quickly crawl into my sleeping bag and zip it up, knowing I must look like a damn mummy. Thats exactly what it feels like. It’s not comfortable, on the contrary, I feel cramped, like burried alive, but I have no choice if I dont want to freeze all night long, or loose some of my toes.

Did I mention that I hate all of this?

I could be lying in a comfortable bed right now, warm, snuggled up in a cozy, less crushing blanket. But no.

It will be nice, they said.

Nice in the ass!

Lying on my back, I suppress the trembling of my limbs and imagine myself lying on the sofa in front of the fireplace at home, with a cup of hot chocolate in my hand and some oatmeal cookies.

What I originally thought would lead to a mood lift, actually only leads to my stomach rumbling loudly, reminding me that I didn’t eat a full meal today.

Well, chocolate bars and potatoe chips aren’t a full meal for me, they’re snacks.

And snacks are used for filling small gaps, not THE gap!

We’ll chop wood and make a fire, then we can cook and make tea, they said.

We’ll take the gas cooker with us, just in case, they said.

We know how you are when you’re hungry, we are prepared, they said.

We’ll take care of everything, dont worry, they said.

We checked the weather report, it’s supposed to be dry and warm, they said.

Yeah, sure.

Instead it has been raining since we got here a few hours ago. Luckily for us, the wood was so wet that every attempt to make a fire failed miserably. So Samanta pulled out the gas cooker with a triumphant grin on her face, only to look around in panic seconds later, confessing that she must have forgotten the gas cartridges.

Fucking great.

“So....either we eat cold ravioli or chocolate or chips”

I had to use all my strength not to freak out in front of her, instead I stepped out into the forest, screaming at the top of my lungs all the forbidden words I could think of.

I knew it was a stupid idea.

Such a damn stupid idea.
