“It’s okay, John, just let me go.” The voice of a young girl echoed in my head. It sounded so familiar and yet…
As I approached the memory, a powerful surge of panic coursed through me. With a jolt, I sat up in bed and pressed my back against the concrete wall as I could feel a cold sweat pour off my body. I tightly gripped my chest to regain control of my breathing. A piercing screech like nails on a chalkboard rang in my ears.
I heavy-handedly reached out, causing me to knock over my bedside lamp as I fumbled across my nightstand, struggling to find my medication. The lamp crashed to the floor and the sound of shattering glass made my heart hit my throat.
The shadows in my moonlit room shifted as if they were dancing along my walls. A scream of fear and desperation welled up in my chest until finally I found the bottle.
My trembling hands forcefully tried to open the simple child-proof lid of the bottle. The frustration that had built up in me turned to rage as the urge to throw the medicine across my room grew. After what felt like forever, the lid came off with a loud pop. I took out three of the small white pills and shoved them into my mouth.
It was too late. The shadows that were dancing along my wall slithered and coalesced in the corner of my room. I clenched my eyes shut, but I could still feel her gaze burning into me. I pulled my knees up to my chest as I rocked back and forth on my bed.
“It will end. It will end. Please, God, let it end.” I told myself repeatedly. I could hear the crunching of glass as I heard her slow approach, then silence. I don’t know how long I sat there until the medicine finally kicked in and I was able to rest.
