Chapter 1
I am running.
Running from what?
Running, heart pounding, chest heaving
Running, running, running from what?
My life? My love? My happiness?
Mom is back from the hospital
Dad is gone, trapped in Afghanistan
A relief, a pain
A joy, a sorrow
The hill I am against
Sadness, confusion, panic
Up.
Running from what?
Mom’s chemo finally working
Mom’s miraculous recovery
Up this hill, onward.
Dad’s gone
This hill…
Can I conquer it?
Running from what?
I reach the top.
I can see forever
Heaven, sunlight
An abundance of warmth.
An abundance of life.
I can, I realize.
I can.

This was a great poem. Many talk about trials they have overcome, but few ever detail just what was involved in the trials they had to endure. And it is that particular journey of climbing which is most important, for each step we take through the hardships makes us stronger, provided we were not defeated by those independent steps we had to take. Powerful message in your poem here. Fantastic.
