Mistake of a Lifetime

Hi! Don't mind the updates for today. I'm just going to start uploading again by tomorrow so I'm reading the existing chapters to refresh my script while editing the typos and grammatical errors I see along the way!

If you follow me, you will get to see a post once I post the next chapter.

Have a good day!

I’m an emotionally crippled person. Crippled by emotions.

“Please, just this once! Ree, please!” Sienna has her hand together in a praying posture with her plum lips pouting and brows turned down dramatically.

I narrow my eyes and scoff, she’s losing her edge if she thinks this is convincing me to go on a blind date with who-knows-who in her place.

Seeing my resolve, her bottom lip quivered and the first of her crocodile tears trickled down. What BS! I kept a straight face despite my twitching brow. Sienna’s eyes caught the movement like the hawk she is, and threw an especially dejected look my way.

“Please, Rayna! You know Ethan would hate it if he knew! He’s going to leave me, I can’t live without him! You know how he’s my only salvation!” She broke out in loud ugly sobs, I cringed some steps away.

Right. He’s her only 'salvation'. That dirtbag, her whirlwind romance boyfriend of last week. She says it’s love at first sight, I think it's the initial signs of dementia.

Though it’s worth marveling how that rotten stinky SOB can be someone’s salvation, especially for someone like Sienna. She’s gorgeous, Okay! Gorgeous to the point, I want to murder this bitch sometimes.

I have known Sienna since we were in High School and how we have kept our acquaintanceship till now is just as surprising to me.

I flopped down on my Bed and huffed out, “Fine!” Sienna halted mid-sob and jumped my bones but before she could land I ducked and rolled on the bed James Bond style. A cry echoed seconds later.

Point: ducked and rolled James Bond’s style but after that I fell off the bed in my very own style.

Sienna, frozen on the bed, burst out in wheezing chortles.

“Stop it, bitch! You still have got a lot to convince me of.” I snapped, trying to hide my flushing embarrassed face.

Her cackling that could rival a deranged witch, knew no end. As a last resort, I got back up, threw several pillows on her because I'm petty, and got out of the room stomping my foot because I'm childish too.

Once in the kitchen of our shared apartment that I paid for, I took out the frozen leftovers. Come to think of it, I hadn’t ever thought a girl like Sienna would ever be in this situation.

It’s bizarre.

We are both from Oregon and I'm from old money so I have hardly seen anyone's eye twitch in my direction but Sienna had lived a different life.

Different meaning difficult.

Born to a single mother, she lived her life with her psychotic Grandmother and I kid you not: the old hag is nuts. She went around spreading crazy tales about monsters and believed Sienna was one too.

I met her first when she came to our school through a scholarship, she was enviable— a beauty with brains. Sadly, the sensation didn't last.

She had freshly mastered the top 100 terrible ways to cope with stress then. For instance, she was, for the lack of a better word, the school's hoe, got into fights with the wrong crowds while she snorted and smoked anything shady.

She was a lone wolf.

I, on the other hand, simply didn’t give a damn about people sucking up to me. My stepmother, Sally, is a decent Californian woman and childless. She poured her overflowing motherly affection on me and made an effort to make me blend in, which I will always be 'grateful' for. *eye roll*

She organized parties, meetups, and group studies with professional help every month and invited my whole class in my name. Sally is about a decade and a half younger than my Dad so her organized parties were rowdy and a teenager’s heaven. She went as far as to clear the house, taking Dad along with her to Villas or trips. So yes, I do believe she had an ulterior motive but because she isn’t a total nutcase or bothersome, I like her.

Well, more than I like my own mother.

Back to the story, it didn’t work out. You see, I have this insufferable personality and no mouth filter so any points I got because of my stepmother overdoing things were ruined as soon as I opened my mouth.

A year in she gave up on Parties but her efforts to get me a friend didn’t deter at all.

So see... except for my bad personality, I also lead a dull life and I like to maintain quiet in my life. I spent my time in high school reading or in extracurricular activities learning new things because I have some ambitions which include a ragingly successful career and not getting knocked up in my teens, so yeah! I'm a loner too.

I found Sienna, the girl living the American Dream, crying in an isolated library section that only I wandered off to on certain days. The rest was history.

Though I’m a mean bitch, I pitied her and I also liked how she wasn’t always clingy or flattering. Her grandmother was cuckoo and her life was hard. My Dad and Sally liked her by default as she was the only girl to stick around. For the remaining years of school, she pretty much lived with us.

Our relationship is of a symbiotic nature. We depend on each other: an ideal relationship.

Though past all her glittery life, I noted these years that she’s weird, really weird. Weird… in a sense that is hard to explain. The microwave ‘dinged’ getting me out of my memory lane. I plated my meal and grabbed a bottle of water.

All in all, the only virtue I have is that I don’t judge nor do I have a knack of meddling in others’ business but you can't unsee what you see, alright!

Sienna never had to work out to stay in perfect shape, which you could probably blame on genes, but she seemed to hear things I didn’t. She usually knew when someone was past the door before they knocked and could tell dirty clothes from clean without ever bringing them to her nose. It was like she was superhuman or something.

Most of all, I have never seen her fall sick or be hungover, not to mention the texture of her hair and skin that I can only compete with after several spa treatments.

Her loud giggling from the living room almost made me snort as I sat by the aisle. She must be talking to that trashcan. I swear the guy has no redeeming qualities.

My mind wandered to how Sienna usually disappeared at night. She had a room in our mansion. I’d had mild insomnia for most of my life so I usually roamed around. One night when I passed by her room, I heard her phone ringing continuously and she was not picking up or putting it on silent. I turned the knob only to find her bed ruffled while she was nowhere to be found.

It could be that she left for a late-night romp but my Dad had built our mansion like a fortress and even I, who have lived my whole life there, had never been able to sneak past the security. The next day, I found her on the Breakfast table looking chirpy as ever. I had stayed the night in her room so I knew she didn't return.

Her late-night escapades became a regular occurrence but I never brought it up.

Mostly you would see her sniffing or making strange voices. I have even seen her eyes glazing unnaturally too. First, because though people believed she was using me, I’m smart enough to know her presence in my life had its merit besides, I’m used to her presence. Secondly, she is inconsequential.

Another peculiarity is Ethan. Sienna is the high-maintenance type and I have never seen her with a fling without a six-figure income nor have I ever seen her giggling or falling on thin air for someone like she does for him.

Ethan is a freeloader who lives in his brother’s place in a close-knit family. There’s nothing about his appearance that stands out, his manners are that of a juvenile delinquent and I have smelled weed on him a time or two.

He’s fit, I will give him that. His brother owns a security agency so unfortunately he’s not going to die starving anytime soon either, but that's not about it.

He is an A-grade asshole.

Sienna had always been a freak but because she was hot and willing for a good time, boys were always in and out of her revolving bedroom door so this sudden settling down is unsettling me a little.

When I decided to come to NY for college, the decision was based on my ambition to expand my wings without Dad’s influence and Sienna tagged along. I wish to run my own business without crouching under my Dad’s shadow because anybody can be rich if they are determined, but not everyone is an icon to look up to.

Sienna comes jumping in the kitchen at that moment, dressed up like she’s going to a pageant. With a glance, I recognize the designer top I bought last week and the limited edition heels Sally sent me last month. If it isn’t obvious, we are the same size.

“He is taking me out, how do I look? Do you think Ethan will like it?” I bet my pussy, he will. That good-for-nothing goes bonkers for her.

Her face is caked with make-up, my make-up to be exact. She doesn’t own make-up, she never needed any. She still doesn't, but like I said, she becomes a lunatic for him in seven different ways.

I raise a thumbs-up and scoff, “You look good which you should, as 85% of articles of clothing and accessories clinging to your body are mine when I clearly remember telling you not to touch anything unless it is two months old in my closet.”

Believe me now? Attitude issues.

Sienna bursts out laughing and checks herself in the mirror covering the wall, “Let’s see if he will like it enough to spend howling the night away in my clutches.” She laughs throwing her head back.

And this, Ladies and Gentlemen, is why we are friends.

I clearly am a selfish bitch but Sienna has a talent to wave off every snarky remark with annoying precision. An admirable talent, I'll admit.

I tip the glass, looking at the woman most definitely under the influence, “Wreck him to shreds but when I get up in the morning I don’t want to see that trash passed out on my couch.” He had been, for every day last week.

Sienna looks my way and wink, “If we are coming back, we surely won’t make it past the door.”

I raise my glass in a mock toast, “Cheers to the old senile lady across the hall dumping her trash on your passed-out asses.” You would think I'm bluffing, but that crazy lady had done this to more people than you can count on one hand.

She opens her mouth to retort when the bell rings and she unnecessarily widens her eyes before she turns to the mirror at lightning speed and then leaps to the door.

Hearing several squealing and smooching voices, I try not to gag. When they go on for about minutes with no intention of stopping, I can’t help myself, “Get past my door already, I’m hardly interested in a live demonstration of how rodents colonize!”

I hear sniggers before I see them. Attach to the hip together like chewed-up chewing gum to Sienna, is Ethan. He’s Latin American with a sweet bronze complexion, a dozen piercings, and ugly tattoos. He’s smiling sickly with his teeth on display, “Darling Ree, you sound awfully jelly~ I know this dude who is into stuck-up bit– Aah, you bitch!”

Before he could end his ridiculous proposition, I had thrown the monthly fashion magazine in his shit face. “I’m not drunk enough for that.” Walking around the aisle, I give him a stink eye. “Don’t stain my marble floor with your insufferable presence and get going.” I don’t stay to hear his retort, instead walk to my room.

I heard a growl and Sienna whispering something inaudible to him. Weirdos! I don’t like him and I’m sure the sentiment is mutual.

Flopping down on my bed, I bury my face in a pillow. I wait with my raging thoughts for about ten minutes and when I’m certain they are gone, I groan loudly into my pillow.

Out of people, I despise the ones who leech off others but I can’t help myself being a bitch so this is what I get. People naturally don’t like me and those who try to, are either those who have relations with me or want something from me.

Worst of all, though I hate sharing my things, I allow Sienna because I don’t want to be stranded alone. For the same reason, I won’t confront her for her freakiness. I’m even going this weekend to that stupid Blind date for her.

I’m so pathetic, maybe I’m biased toward that bastard Ethan for the same reason. Sienna is outgoing and likeable, and with Ethan in her life she’s making more friends, probably I’m not going to have a friend soon.

Why can’t I just detach myself from toxic people?!

But I know that’s because that would result in nobody being left on my side.

Note: Well, your comments, reviews, and shares mean the world to me. It motivates me to write.
