Chapter 1: Tales of Lucy

You probably think this tale is of a delusional girl who needs medical attention and in a way it is. However, I am merely a sweet and innocent girl that just wants to have a little adventure. But how can you be expected to behave when you live in a rich home with strict parents who don’t let you out of the house let alone the town. That’s why I have my fair share of secret passageways out of this dark cell because all I’m interested in is pirates and a one way ticket to adventure.

It’s that specific longing that caused me to take one of those passageways and head out to town to scurry up some mischief. That or initially it will find me with its usual persistence on getting me into trouble.

“Madam Lucy! You get back here you bloody girl!” My bodyguard yelled back to me, as I ran through deep mud laughing like a maniac. My mission today was to stay away from the guards as long as I could and explore the town. The only problem is staying out of trouble. I swear I don’t go looking for such a thing. My mischief is usually quite managed but somehow trouble always seems to find me as if it has a life of its own.

Passing the dusty road, filled with growing pines that seem to go on for miles, I’d finally reached the market, ridding myself of the guard pursuing me. He’d sure be hearing hell from my mother later on for losing my trail.

As I walked into the market I pushed my way through crowds gathering, feeding on the latest gossips. Apparently, military ships would be coming in today with captures criminals on board. Words of pirates were whispered throughout the crowd, catching my attention. I couldn’t help but find myself listening in further.

“Did you hear that they supposedly caught the Bloody Twins of the High Seas and are bringing them in for trial?” asked a gossiping town’s girl.

“No way! Drew and Kana, impossible!” exclaimed the other girl who appeared to fake such enthusiasm for the topic. Listening to this conversation was opposite for me because I was inversed and found myself joining the conversation quite awkwardly.

“Is it true miss? Did they really capture such amazing pirates?” I asked with a sparkling look in my eyes.

“Yes, they did but I highly doubt that any common person would refer to such a thing as amazing.” The first women said with a distasteful British accent looking me over, taking in the dirt gathered on a rather expensive dress for such an appearance. I wasn’t unaccustomed to this kind of side look however and chose to simply ignore it. It was a natural reaction in this town to my behavior as people would often throw their nose at the mischief a lady like myself got into. Despite that, I picked up from the tone that the two rather me go on with myself. “Oh, I see thank you madam.” I politely responded beginning to walk away. It seemed I’d have to find my information elsewhere but the the second girl chuckled responding to her friend.

“Did you see that filthy mess? What kind of lady is she and to be raised so high in society? Those Washington’s need to keep their daughter on a leash,” she spat as her friend responded in laughter, muttering under her breath.

“Or a loony bin. Did you know they call her the deranged younger sister of the lovely Annabelle?”

At the mention of my missing sister Annabelle, I felt anger overcome me. Before I could really think through on it I had turned around and punched the girl across her jaw.

The other one, who did not look very pleased at such antics, grabbed her and yelled for the officers. “Oh this isn’t good.” I thought running away from the now charging officers.

“Hey you there! Stop under the name of the king!” The tall fat officer yelled at me sweating as he tried to make his way to me. Luckily, the crowd was too thick and he was much to slow to catch me, so I knew this would be one of my easiest getaways yet. Or so I thought. The other skinny, but tough officer had taken a shortcut and jumped right through the crowd to find himself right in front of me.

He tried to reach for me with a satisfied look forming on his face but I wasn’t going to let that happen so easily. Cruel as it is, I kicked him where it hurts the most. “Fancy he’ll be sore in the morning..” I thought to myself. Then I took the chance to run off because I knew he wouldn’t be moving for awhile. The only problem was getting back to the manor without the other officer catching me and reporting my bloody butt to my parents.

As I was running at full speed, passing the many winding trees. I noticed a girl hiding in the groves, curly locks flowing down her back, staring at the officers from a distance. Pausing for a moment, taking her in I couldn’t help but think she looked a lot like Kana the Bloody Beauty, one of the pirate twins, but that was impossible considering they were arrested. Besides, all I know of her looks were the inaccurate wanted posters of the duo posted all over town.

I didn’t focus on her long though because I had my own issues behind me. But of course the unlucky Lucy Washington found herself at a dark dead end with no escape. “Maim, just quit your running here, and I won’t press charges for punching the lady and hitting a man in his weak spot.” The fat officer said with an amused look. My amusement that he even caught up was probably only growing his irritation.

“Alright, alright, I’m turning myself in. My parents are going to have you beat me on my rear end though.” I smiled and walked towards him innocently. He smirked thinking he’d got me but I sinned again and hit that gentlemen in the chin. He really is a git for not seeing that one. I went for a dash and noted that the girl was no longer in the bushes. Speeding towards the manor, I wished I would have let that dumb officer catch me thinking of the punishments to come.

My bloody guard had reported me to my parents and mother lectured me about being a lady of such a high status and how I should behave in a certain manner. She never could understand the person her own daughter was, and it only grew into hatred when “perfect” Annabelle disappeared.

“Lucy, you are a young lady who does not seem to understand the duties of the child in a noble family. We would never dealt with this when Annabelle lived here. She always seemed to keep you calm and she was so graceful. After all the towns talk of you being this destranged women, your father and I had to take things into our own hands,” my mother scolded. I could see the stress of Annabelle and my mischief had weighed onto her over the year. “That is why in the next month I’ll be sending you to the Waleward University for Ladies so they can train you properly. There’s no chance of any harm coming to you there.” My mother, Cecilia Washington, stated coldly to me.

“Mother! I meant no harm but those ignorant girls said I should be put on a leash!” I yelled at her because there was no way I’d attend such a primped up and grave school. It was known for taking the spirits out of anyone who attended and rumored the insane were sent there.

She gave me a stern look then spat, “Well they’re not wrong. I have clearly failed at making you a lady so a leash might do you some good.” I was struck by her harshness and just stood speechless for a moment, pondering the idea. My own mother thought I should be kept on a leash. However, if she really knew me then she would understand that I wouldn’t be able to go willingly but I could put on the act.

“Yes mother I understand. I will pack my things.” I said in the most proper way I could manage. My mother nodded then waved her hand at the door shooing me away. I walked out hiding my emotions, listening through the cracks of the door as my father came in muttering of how he so wished I could be more like Annabelle.

The only problem was Annabelle wasn’t proper; She craved the adventure and free life as much as I did. She was the only one who truly understood my desire to leave this place. I was also the only one who knew that Annabelle secretly told me stories of pirates and their adventures. I really wish she was still here to tell me such things. As I packed I thought of ways to escape going to this school because those brick walls were not going to hold me.

When I finished packing, I opened my window and jumped out. This small jump was the start of my new life. I wonder what trouble I’ll find myself in with no boundaries from my strict parents.

A week had passed since I left my dungeon and I had somehow managed to stay out of trouble and not much had been spoken of me throughout town. Perhaps my mother and father decided it best to think I would rebel and then return quietly. But in town today there were whispering's of the captured pirate twins going to trial. This would be my chance to find some excitement. I know I said trouble finds me but this time I went looking for it. Today I was going to find the girl with curly locks that I had only seen once before, and she seemed up to no good and where that behavior comes from, the adventure starts. The first place I started towards was the groves I saw her in a week earlier.

I noticed that the groves directions had a perfect view of the ocean so it was obvious she had been waiting on someone from the sea. Sure enough, I found the blonde, curly locked girl sleeping in a dark corner. This may seem inappropriate but I had to clear my suspicions so I kicked the girl slightly on the side and she gave me a glare. “ Wake up sleepyhead! I need to ask you something.” I said sliding down next to her.

Looking up at me squinting she asked,“What do you want? Ladies like you shouldn’t speak to folk like me. You know proper girls speaking to street low lives that is.”

“Oh please, I am far from proper and I need you to tell me who you are.” I exclaimed annoyed.

“Why don’t you tell me who you be first?” She asked with improper grammar.

“Okay, I be the crazy rebellious lady, Lucy Washington, and now you.” I exclaimed matching her tone and speech pattern.

“Fine, I’m Kana Dragon, one of the pirate twins of the high seas. The Bloody Beauty the call me.” Kana said annoyed. She seemed impatient as she spoke to me, still keeping her eyes on the sea.

“I knew it! Then where is Drew?” I asked yelling loudly.

Kana clapped her hand over my mouth and sadly stated, “They captured him and he distracted them so I could escape but I’m going to get him back.” With that she stood up and smiled looking me over. I could tell my enthusiasm and curiosity had intrigued her more. “Know anything about pirates?” Kana smiled, mischief written in her blue eyes.

“Of course, I have always wanted to be one and I can navigate.” I exclaimed with an amazed face.

“Navigator, eh?” Kana seemed to think and added “Join me and my brother Drew than. How bout it, what do ye say?” I was so shocked of what she was asking that I stood speechless as usual when I’m thrown of. The Kana of the high seas was asking me to be apart of her crew!

“I accept!” I yelled and held out my hand. Kana stared at my hand for a moment then slapped it away smirking. “Why did you smack me?” I asked confused.

Kana started to crack up and exclaimed between giggles, “ It’s called a high five. I don’t do that shake hands like an acquaintances thing. My crew is my family.” I felt a smile grow on my face and nodded my head, high fiving her. Had my mother seen such an improper show of greetings, she’d faint.

“What is the plan to save Drew?” I asked frowning.

“Oh we’re going to rescue him and your skinny figure is going to help.” Kana remarked. “Oh no what have I gotten myself into?” I thought as Kana took my hand. “Take me to your residence.” She said smiling. I walked her to the stables I was now staying at and she laughed. Mr.Barker had been allowing me to rest there because he often sympathized with me as a child, seeming so unhappy in my place. I always felt more comfortable there.

“I was wrong. You ain’t a lady at all Lu!” I took in her nickname then smiled in response, “You see. So why did you need to see my home?”

Kana replied, “I need ye to give me a pretty dress so I can distract the officers while you help Drew escape.”

I winked and said, “I have the perfect one for you.” Kana smiled and I pulled out a Caspian blue, frilly dress that I had out grown. She stared at it wildly and I knew I’d have to help her get it on properly. By the look on her face she’d never seen anything so high class. After ten minutes of trying to get Kana into the dress; I looked her over and saw how much she oddly fit the look in comparison to me.

Kana’s long, flowing blonde locks curled down perfectly at her waist and she was short with a feminine look, brought out by her ocean blue eyes. My heart hurt when I thought of how Kana looked like she should be the lady and I the pirate. Life would have been a lot easier if I’d just fit with the right flow of my status. I shook off the feeling and stated, “Alright you look perfect, so what’s next?” She didn’t answer just grabbed me and took off running towards the pier. I was told to hide quietly behind a barrel while she worked her magic. I did as I was told and waited for the signal (Kana would cross her fingers behind her back).

Finally, the men dragging a boy by ropes halted in front of the “lovely” Kana. The first dark man exclaimed, “My, my, What seems to be the problem madam?” Kana put on her sex appealing face and exclaimed, “ I saw you lovely officers standing so proud and handsome like that I just couldn’t resist taking a little peak.” There she went, fingers crossed so I snuck behind the officers focused on Kana and headed for Drew tied up. I pulled out the shiv I had taken from Kana and started to cut the ropes but found myself looking into the most gorgeous pair of blue eyes I’d seen. They were brighter than Kana’s but more aged. He seemed to take in this hair full of hay, and ripped up dress girl who struggled with the weapon in hand as I bit my lip focused. Finally the ropes snapped and all hell broke loose.
