Chapter 1
THE EYE
The first thing Emily Carter noticed was the silence.
Not the normal kind.
It was the kind of silence that made the entire city feel like it had stopped breathing.
She stood at the crosswalk, holding a paper cup of coffee in one hand and her phone in the other.
Cars were everywhere.
People were everywhere.
A bus was stopping twenty feet away.
Someone was arguing on the sidewalk.
A dog was barking.
Everything had been normal three seconds ago.
Then—
Nothing.
Emily slowly lowered her phone.
The traffic lights were still working.
The cars weren't moving.
Nobody was moving.
Even the dog had stopped barking.
"What's happening?"
The woman beside her didn't answer.
Emily looked around.
A man in a business suit was staring at the road.
Another person had taken out their phone.
Then the ground shook.
Once.
Hard.
Emily nearly dropped her coffee.
A low rumble rolled beneath the street.
People screamed.
The pavement cracked.
"What the fuck?!"
Another tremor hit.
This time, the road split open.
A massive crack tore through the intersection, sending pieces of asphalt into the air.
Cars crashed into each other.
Windows shattered.
People ran.
Emily froze.
She couldn't move.
Something was underneath them.
Something enormous.
The crack widened.
And then the ground exploded.
A black, wet shape shot out of the street.
At first, Emily thought it was a cable.
Then she realized it was moving.
It was a tentacle.
A gigantic tentacle.
It rose higher than the buildings around them, twisting through the air like a living tree.
People screamed as it slammed into the street.
Emily stumbled backward.
"No..."
The creature moved again.
Fast.
Much faster than something that size should have been able to move.
The tentacle wrapped around a man.
He barely had time to scream.
It lifted him into the air.
His legs kicked wildly.
Someone grabbed his arm.
"HELP HIM!"
Three people pulled.
The tentacle tightened.
The man's scream became louder.
Then Emily saw it.
At the end of the tentacle was an eye.
A gigantic human-like eye.
It opened.
It looked directly at her.
Emily stopped breathing.
The eye moved across the crowd.
Left.
Right.
Searching.
Then it stopped.
On the man.
The tentacle suddenly pulled him closer.
Something opened beneath the eye.
A mouth.
Rows of teeth appeared from inside the creature.
A long, pale tongue slid out.
The man disappeared into the mouth.
The crowd went insane.
Everyone ran.
Emily ran too.
She didn't look back.
She pushed through people, jumped over a fallen bicycle and nearly fell when another explosion shook the street.
Her phone slipped from her hand.
She didn't stop.
She couldn't.
She heard screaming behind her.
Then—
Silence.
Again.
Emily turned.
The street was empty.
The creature was gone.
The crack was still there.
Cars were burning.
People were crying.
But the tentacle had disappeared beneath the ground as if it had never existed.
Emily stared at the destruction.
"What was that?"
Nobody answered.
---
Seven days later.
Emily sat on her bedroom floor, staring at the television.
The news had been talking about the incident for an entire week.
Nobody had an explanation.
The government called it an "unknown geological event."
Scientists called it impossible.
The internet called it the beginning of the end.
Videos of the creature had been uploaded everywhere.
Most were deleted within hours.
Some disappeared completely.
But Emily had watched enough.
She knew what she had seen.
And she knew one thing.
That eye had looked at the man before it took him.
Like it had chosen him.
The television suddenly went black.
Emily frowned.
"Seriously?"
Her phone buzzed.
A notification appeared.
EMERGENCY ALERT
She picked it up.
The message was only one sentence.
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR HOME.
Emily stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
Her heart began beating faster.
Outside, people started screaming.
Emily slowly walked toward the window.
She pulled the curtain aside.
The street below was filled with people.
Everyone was looking upward.
Emily followed their eyes.
At first, she saw nothing.
Then she noticed the clouds.
They were moving.
Not with the wind.
They were rotating.
A perfect circle formed above the city.
Something was inside it.
Something huge.
Emily stepped backward.
Her phone buzzed again.
This time, there was no emergency warning.
It was a message from an unknown number.
Just six words.
ONE OF YOU HAS BEEN MARKED.
Emily stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
YOU HAVE SEVEN DAYS.
Then a final message.
FIND THEM.
The power went out.
The city disappeared into darkness.
And somewhere beneath the streets—
something opened its eye.
