“I didn’t need your help. I told you, I can handle myself. I already took care of one of them.” I vaguely recall spraying the one in the face with my pepper spray that still rustles around in my pocket. It gives me pride to know that I did manage to hurt at least one of them.

The next moment happens in the blink of an eye. He has his hand wrapped around my neck and my body pressed back against the dimly lit wall next to us. If there were people around, they would probably call the police. But there isn’t anyone to witness what he does to me. That should ignite me with fear, but in fact it does the exact opposite. Is that worse?

Once again those strange sparks shoot through my body and I instantly relax into his grasp, as if I belong this close to him.

“Can you handle yourself now Elara?” His voice is low and deep, his lips close to my ear.

À dix-huit ans, j'ai failli perdre la vie. C'était avant qu'un mystérieux inconnu aux yeux rouge ardent n'arrache mon agresseur loin de moi, disparaissant avant même que je puisse comprendre ce qui m'arrivait. Pendant six ans, ces yeux ont hanté ma mémoire, l'écho d'une chose que je ne pouvais nommer et que je ne pouvais oublier. Ils ont pesé sur mon âme et m'ont déchirée au fil des années, bien plus que je ne voulais le laisser paraître. Mais lorsqu'une menace pèse à nouveau sur ma vie, il revient… et mon sauveur devient bien plus qu'un simple fantôme du passé. Il m'entraîne dans un monde que je croyais imaginaire, régi par la magie, les monstres et des secrets qu'il refuse de partager. Tout ce que je veux, c'est survivre assez longtemps pour retrouver le chemin de la maison. Mais plus je reste, plus je crains que le destin et mon propre cœur n'aient d'autres projets pour moi.
