Chapter one; Predicament

This was not a predicament she ever thought she would be facing in her life. Never as a girl growing through all the different stages of her life, her body moulding and growing, her mind expanding, and her beauty intensifying did she ever believe that she would need to make the choices she is forced to make now. She wonders how it ever came to this crossroad. Just as she was falling deeper into the depths of her mind, there was the hand of possession, she felt press against her lower back that pulled her back to the present moment. The moment her mind had tried to escape from, to numb the overwhelming feelings that mixed in the air and clouded every logical thought that may have tried to present itself to her.

The depths of her green eyes flashed to the face that belonged to the possessive man who touched her. His eyes, almost black with the anger she knew he was harbouring. However, they usually appear to be such a rainbow of browns and greens, creating the most intricate shade of hazel one has ever seen. If you looked close enough, or if he ever allowed you to be close enough should be the statement made here. You would see how the swirls in his eyes appeared to be dancing, it was magical to witness.

“Shall we?” his voice rumbled deep inside his chest reverberating through to her core with his body pressing against her own frame that appeared so delicate and fragile beside his own overpowering form.

“Of course.” Was her reply, through a voice that didn’t tremble. She would never allow for her words to stutter in such a public place, surrounded by his peers. Or at least those who believed they were his peers in such a setting. But really, they were insignificant to him. He would not even remember more than twenty percent of their names. He didn’t care for people; he saw them as less then.

With the decision made the hand that lay against the curve in her back, it pressed into her body, and it guided her, he guided her. Walking through the vast room with dimmed lights that was filled with a sea of suits and formal gowns all standing around in their own small circles. Laughter and conversation melded together and bounced off the walls, running through the room and creating an atmosphere most would consider enjoyable. For her it was another evening of being forced to wear a mask that hid away how she truly felt on the inside. She has mastered this façade when eyes be-known to her life are watching.

Several people had tried to bid farewell to him, whether it be with a simple nod of their heads or an extended hand for a shake. He ignored them all, his head held high and his height standing above most. He was intimidating, to say the least. As always though, she was invincible beside him, why did she even bother to accompany him to these functions? No one could see her past him, her existence was removed the moment he came into her life, her own identity faded into the background. He was the most important person to all, and she was always referred to as his beautiful companion, but was that for his ego or did they notice her?

They moved from the room, it felt as though the air became easier to breathe, and lights brightened. Walking over the marbled floors towards the impeccably clear glass doors that stood gloriously before them. The darkness of the night was clear through the pane. Just as the doorman was about to reach and allow her the freedom into the night. A voice boomed from above them, a voice that made him stop. Not often was he able to be stopped in his tracks, but this voice stopped him. She looked to his face first, head tilted slightly to see the expressions that crossed over it. Was it frustration or was that a flash of tension that ran through his features? She couldn’t be sure because he turned his head to peer over his shoulder. Looking up at the landing between the double grand staircase.

There stood another, a man that was as well dressed as any other that was in attendance of tonight’s event. The difference being is that he held a smirk across his lips. Why was he smirking though? Who was he? Her curiosity was piquing as he turned around, moving her to turn with him. Instead of his hand resting against the small of her back, it snaked around her waist and pulled her into him. Possessive. If she could, she would roll her eyes, but that was not something that would bode well with him. It would of course be deemed as unacceptable behaviour.

“Sylvester.” His teeth sounded clenched, and his grip became tighter. Her small frame was being held firmly to the side of his body. A name, Sylvester.

“Titan, you’re quite a difficult man to get in contact with.” Sylvester spoke in a deep voice that had a sense of tease playing through his tone as he began to walk towards the staircase and descending. “Although, it’s feeling as if your elusiveness is intentional at this point, is it?” Sylvester left the question hanging and continued down the stairs.

“I’m busy and now I am leaving.” Titan went to turn but the voice of Sylvester continued, keeping Titan where he stood with his back turned.

“I don’t think you’re too busy to hear what I have to say, Titan.” Although she had been turned away the curiosity was gnawing at her, she turned her head, stretching her delicate neck to watch as he continued to descend the stairs, so graceful with every step. “We can either have this conversation in the company of your ever so beautiful plus one, or you can accept my invitation to talk as professionals.” His eyes, Sylvester’s eyes had captured hers as he spoke of her physical appearance. The bar had been forced below her that even a simple moment of glancing at one another she felt a long-lost feeling sweeping through her.

Titan felt rigged, uncomfortable. A feeling that no one has made him feel in such a time. What was it Sylvester wanted to discuss? Would it hold significance to him or was he being baited into a pointless business proposition that would surely be declined even by the executives that work beneath him. While Titan remained silent, he could feel and hear Sylvester getting closer, the sound of his footsteps growing louder.

“Call into the office on Monday.” Titan spoke with a voice of distain that leeched into every word with his hand raised to cease Sylvester’s approach, footsteps ceasing and silence casting down around them, that was before a deeper tone erupted around the quiet room. “A word of warning, don’t corner the lion again.” Titan turned and his steel-ish eyes bore into the confidant figure that merely returned with hands raised, stepping back in a show of submission but a playful smirk dance across his lips.

“I’ll see you Monday, Titan. Enjoy the rest of your evening beautiful plus one.” Sylvester sent a wink in her direction. A rush of blood rose and spread across her cheeks and she looked away. Straight ahead her eyes shifted as Titan began to lead them to the exit once again.

The cold night air was welcomed by the beautiful plus one. It would have felt like a lash against any others bare skin, instead it was a welcomed cooling sensation to the fiery heat that saturated her entire body. Soon though as the heat dissipated, the cold night air could be felt stinging, not for long. The black car appeared before us, the door was opened, and Titan gestured for her to get in. Which she did.

The silk fabric of her dress easily slid across the leather seat and as she settled into the far side staring ahead at the tinted partition that blocked all sound and vision from passengers and drivers, he was now in beside her. With the sound of the car door closing behind him, they were once again alone.

She turned her body towards his. “Did you enjoy your eveni-” Her soft voice was interrupted by the course growl that ripped into the car.

“Did you fucking enjoy that?” His frustration was evident, it created a tension that thickened the air around them. She didn’t cower, she didn’t flinch. Instead, she slid closer to him. Her elegant fingers caress over his knee and slowly those beautiful fingers slide over the expensive fabric of his suit pants. Between his thighs with his crotch being the destination. But his own hand took hold of her delicate wrist and held it firmly.

“Don’t play games with me, Emerald.” Her name was spoken into the silent space, it was spoken almost in anger on his tongue. “I could feel your body lusting for him, one compliment and you would fall into another mans hands. Is it really that easy?” He was crass in the way he spoke of her morals which turned her blood to a boil and she tried to snatch her wrist from his vice grip to no avail. His grip only tightened. Her soft brows furrowed together, and her lips parted to speak, to defy him.

However, before the defiance could even begin, he was almost atop of her. Turned in his seat his intimidating large frame tower over her own petite structure. Leaving her feeling inferior and her heart racing as she looked wide eyed into his own fire struck stare.

“Remind me who came to who, hmm? You chose me, Emerald. Don’t let recent history slip your mind so quickly.” All she could fathom as a retort was to nod her head. This seemed to ease him as he calmed back into his spot and released his grip on her wrist after placing it back against his thigh and encapsulating her in his hold. Pulling her into his side and leaving her to rest her hair against his chest. Which she did.

“People like Sylvester are no good for you, Emerald. That is why you chose me, I know what is best for you and you know that is me, don’t you?” His tone had softened, perhaps in attempt to appeal as a gentle giant, rather than an angry ogre which took spotlight more often than not.

In fact, she had not made a choice, his proposition still always sat at the forefront of her mind. Swarming and drowning every other thought that even tried to surface, to distract her. He was in belief that because she was always by his side that her decision was concreted. It wasn’t though. The ring he had offered her several times still sat in the cartier box in his safe. Not donned upon her finger. With each passing day her choice becomes clearer, but the exit seems almost unreachable.

“I appreciate your ever-growing concern for me, Titan. However, I can look after myself if you allowed me to. I could even help you, at the office I mean. If you didn’t see me in the light, you do.” She tilted her head as the respectful, yet desperate tone of her voice touched his ears.

He looked back at her with a grin across his face. “I’m starting to believe all you want from me is a position at my company, Emerald. I take from you and only then can you take from me.” His thumb rose to her lips and gently stroked across the softness of her lipstick-stained mouth. “You have not allowed me to take from you yet, so you cannot take from me. You know the deal.” A shiver rolled through her body as she was reminded of what men want and what women are coerced into doing to gain any traction in this male dominated world.
