Do You Remember?
Once upon a time, there was a man. The man had a normal life, with a normal family and a normal job and a normal house.
Every day he woke up in a normal bed, until one day, he awoke in a bed that wasn’t his.
He remembered going to sleep in his bed, yet he awoke in a strange room. It looked a bit like a child’s bedroom, with posters for baseball players and other baseball memorabilia lining shelves. There was a desk, a crappy folding chair in front of it, the bed was small, far too small for the man, and there was a large bookshelf. Instead of books, it was mostly filled with baseball things.
The man got up and walked out of the room, wondering what was going on. The hallway was carpeted with three rooms and a staircase leading off of it.
Two of the doors were open, one was a bathroom and one was an adults bedroom. There was a small table with a picture of a child on it - a school picture, to be exact.
The man walked down the stairs and got to the first floor, which had a cluttered living room and kitchen. These rooms were also completely normal.
Skipping these rooms entirely, the man walked out to the mudroom, put on old boots he found, and went outside. It was snowing, and cars were driving down the road.
Finally! Thought the man There’s someone else here!
He could even see the people driving, so they were for sure alive.
The man ran into the road, and a car was coming towards him from a distance. It may seem dumb, but the car had more than enough space to slow down.
But as the car slowly progressed closer and closer, the man thought that maybe something was wrong.
Until the car hit him, killing him instantly.
He awoke back in the child’s room. Only this time, he could swear that something was different. The room felt less… defined, less real. No difference was noticeable enough that he could put his finger on it, but the room felt different in some way.
He went out the door and into the hallway, and the theme continued. Something felt wrong, even though there were still three doors, two open and one closed, and a staircase.
He traveled down the staircase, and suddenly he found a difference. In the kitchen, there was supposed to be a calendar on the wall. He wasn’t crazy! Things were changing.
The man went outside again, and it was still snowing. The man walked, his feet cold without shoes on, and he saw the house across the street.
There were shadows in this house, so he could see people there.
I’ll just cross the street and knock on the door! He thought. But as he did, a large truck barreled down the street right next to him, before hitting him and killing him instantly.
The man awoke again, in the same room. He decided he should begin to study his surroundings more carefully. The room had a desk in it, with a proper desk chair and signed baseball on it. The rest of the room was empty.
The man continued to walk out of the room, into the hallway, which had three doors, one closed, two open, and nothing else in it. The staircase was bare and the walls were painted white.
The kitchen had no tables, just a stove and refrigerator, both with nothing on them.
When the man rushed outside, he noticed the snow was getting thicker. He also knew exactly what needed to happen next to continue the loop.
He ran into the traffic, and got hit by a car, killing him instantly.
When the man awoke again, everything was gone from the room. The walls were blank and there was no furniture. When he left the room, all of the doors were closed in the hallway. The stairs themselves were solid white, and the kitchen and living room were empty.
The man exited the house to find himself in an incredible blizzard. He attempted to stumble forward, but was blown backwards, hitting his head against the wall.
He continued to battle with the wind, pushing forward bit by bit, until he finally managed to get to the road, where a car came and killed him instantly.
Then he awoke yet again, to a completely empty room. Somehow it was even more empty than the last time. The man left the room, and chills ran up his spine. The staircase was gone, and the doors were all shut, except for the one door that had never been open. Seeing no other option, he entered the room.
It was an infinite black void, and the door disappeared as the man entered. The words “DO YOU REMEMBER?” were written on the wall.
