Chapter 1 - Nudge from Fate

In the beginning, there was only the Creator, a being of pure light and energy. The Creator decided to create the universe, and from its essence, the first angels were born.

At first, all angels were genderless beings of pure energy, with no physical form. But as they began to interact with each other and with the universe, they started to develop distinct personalities and characteristics.

As the angels grew in number and complexity, the Creator decided to give them physical forms, so that they could better interact with the world. The Creator split the angels into two groups: male and female.

The male angels were given strong, muscular bodies, with broad shoulders and powerful wings. They were tasked with protecting the universe and maintaining order.

The female angels were given slender, graceful bodies, with delicate wings and a gentle demeanor. They were tasked with nurturing life and spreading love and compassion throughout the universe.

Despite their physical differences, male and female angels were equal in power and importance. They worked together to maintain balance and harmony in the universe, and their love for each other was pure and unconditional.

And so, the angels continued to watch over the universe, their presence felt in every corner of creation...

I reluctantly tore my gaze from the captivating book I had been engrossed in and shifted my attention to the circular quartz clock gracing the café’s cozy back room. A peaceful sanctuary tucked away from the commotion of the main room. The walls enveloped me in a calming hue of light blue, adorned with framed prints depicting coffee cups and beans that added to the café’s ambiance.

A quiet sigh, tinged with a hint of disappointment, escaped my lips almost unconsciously. With a resigned expression, I acknowledged to myself, “My break is drawing to a close.” With care, I closed the book cradled in my hands. Pushing myself up from the chair, I began a purposeful stride toward the row of lockers reserved for the staff. Amidst them, my gaze was drawn to the locker marked with a label bearing my name, “Ray.”

Unlocking the locker’s door, I revealed an orderly assortment of books that I had brought from home. They nestled alongside an apron and coat suspended gracefully from hooks, each item seemingly waiting for its role in the café’s symphony to resume.

Focusing my gaze upon the mirrored door of the locker, I observed my own reflection. The illumination within the staff break room cast a spotlight on my deep purple eyes, a striking contrast against my complexion. This uncommon shade of my eyes had always been a conversation starter, eliciting inquiries from those I encountered. A swift adjustment to my shirt collar preceded my retrieval of a green apron, which rested inside the locker.

A familiar voice pierced the air, breaking the solitude of the break room. “Raymond, break time’s over,” it chimed from beyond the room’s walls.

After securing my locker and slipping into the apron, I made my way toward the break room’s exit. With a tone of respect, I softly responded, “I was just about to head back, boss.” I grasped the door handle and gently swung it open, revealing my boss—none other than the café manager—standing on the other side, a figure of authority and purpose.

“There she is again,” he exclaimed, directing my attention to the right side of the café, where the window framed her familiar presence.

As I entered the main café room, my gaze was instantly drawn to her familiar presence seated by the window. As I advanced toward her, I reached out to retrieve my pen and notepad from the counter. Over the past week, it had become a familiar routine—whenever I caught sight of her, there she would be, occupying her customary space, absorbed in contemplation while her gaze steadfastly fixed on the world beyond the glass pane.

I prepared my pen, giving it a quiet click, and in a polite tone, I inquired, “What can I get for you today?”

Her gaze slowly lifted, unveiling a pair of captivating blue eyes that sparkled like a cloudless sky. Those eyes were wide, brimming with emotion, framed by long, fluttering lashes that added to their allure. “Hello again. I’ll have my usual,” she replied, a warm smile gracing her full, pink lips.

In that fleeting moment, time itself appeared to halt, a suspended instant where our eyes connected. A strange sensation surged through me, reverberating at my very core. “Here it is again...” I mused inwardly, swiftly regaining my composure.

Drawing a deep breath, I assured, “Certainly, I’ll have it ready for you.” My response was accompanied by a returned smile.

A delicate blush graced her cheeks, and she redirected her gaze toward the window, seemingly ensnared by the world beyond. I couldn’t resist the urge to contemplate whether it was my mere presence or some other force that had stirred such a response from her. “Thank you,” she whispered gently.

---

Having attended to all the tables, I retraced my steps back to the counter, where I patiently stood. My eyes, however, involuntarily gravitated back toward the girl seated by the window. Like a well-rehearsed routine, the familiar sequence unfolded once more as she set a book onto the table, her movements delicate as she adjusted a pair of reading glasses. With a graceful flick of her fingers, she began to turn the pages of her book. With a graceful sweep, she tucked a strand of platinum hair behind her ear, allowing it to flow in soft curls that framed her heart-shaped face. The creamy complexion of her skin seemed to radiate a luminous glow that effortlessly brightened the entire room.

As I positioned myself by the cash register, a playful nudge from a female coworker interrupted my reverie. “Have you asked her yet?” she inquired, her voice tinged with teasing amusement.

In an effort to conceal my surprise, I affected an air of ignorance and replied, “Ask her about what?”

“Her number?” she quipped, leaning in closer with a mischievous grin playing on her lips.

Taken aback by her response, I found myself momentarily at a loss for words. Yet, before I could compose a suitable reply, she let out a sigh and continued, her voice carrying a hint of exasperation, “You could at least ask her name, dude.” She then turned her attention to tasks at the cash register. “Unfortunately for you, this isn’t one of those cafés where we collect customer names along with their coffee orders.”

A touch of irritation crept into my tone as I shot back, “What’s your point? If I were to engage customers that way, it wouldn’t exactly please the boss.”

“Yeah, he definitely won’t,” she retorted, swiftly snagging a cup of coffee from the barista’s grasp. “The boss has noticed it too, you know, your subtle glances every time she’s in here,” she added, deftly arranging the cup on a tray along with tissues and sugar packets. “You’re not fooling anyone, dude.”

I began to respond, “So that’s why he mentioned—” but my words were abruptly cut off as a tray materialized beside my face, diverting my attention.

“It’s been a while since you’ve shown any interest in people, so I’ll go for it to support you,” she said, extending the tray toward me along with the order. “Take this to her and make a move, dude,” she encouraged, her tone a playful mix of jest and motivation.

Accepting the tray from her extended hand, I was met with her encouraging thumbs-up and the words, “You’ve got this!”

Exhaling a resigned sigh, I made my way toward her table. Each step seemed to amplify the surge of anxiety within me. It was almost as if she could feel my approach because, as I drew nearer, she turned toward me with a welcoming smile. That all-too-familiar sensation washed over me once more, a strange current of emotions that left me both captivated and unsettled.

“Here it is again,” I ruminate silently, my thoughts a mere whisper amidst the ambient café sounds. Carefully, I placed the tray on her table, all the while navigating the currents of emotion that had come to define my encounters with her.

“Thank you so much,” the girl murmured, her attention initially fixed on the tray before gradually lifting her gaze to meet mine.

In that instant, our eyes became entwined, weaving a thread of tension that momentarily rendered me frozen in an awkward, unbroken gaze. Clearing my throat to punctuate the silence, I managed to find my voice. “If you require anything at all, please don’t hesitate to let me know,” I offered, striving for a semblance of confidence.

“Okay, I will, Ray,” she replied, a charming smile gracing her lips. Hearing her address me by name caught me off guard, a surprise that prompted me to question, “You know my name?”

Her response was a giggle, and she playfully indicated my name tag adorning my chest. “Your name is Ray, right?” she playfully affirmed, her smile broadening.

I couldn’t help but chuckle at my own oversight. “My name tag, obviously. How silly of me.” A trace of embarrassment tinged my cheeks, causing my gaze to briefly dip downward. “Anyway, hope you don’t mind me being a little nosy...” As I slowly turned my gaze back to her, I continued, “...may I have the pleasure of knowing your name?”

“My name...” she mumbled back to me, her response tinged with a hint of confusion at my unexpected inquiry.

A faint smile played on my lips as I confessed, “I’ve been noticing you around the café quite a bit lately. I couldn’t help but wonder about your name,” My voice took on a softer, more intimate tone as I added, “and perhaps even your number?”

With a teasing glint in her eyes, she quipped, “Are you trying to hit on me?”

“No! I mean... yeah... if that’s okay with you?” I stumbled over my words, my composure momentarily shaken by her unexpected question.

Her laughter, soft and melodious, danced through the air, a delightful response to my flustered state. A warm and sincere smile graced her lips as she reached out her hand toward me. “I’m Hazel,” she introduced herself.

Taking her hand in mine, a subtle connection sparked between us. “Nice to meet you, Hazel. I’m Raymond,” I replied, my smile reflecting my sincerity.

Hazel’s gaze, captivating and unyielding, held mine, a silent connection forming between us. There was an undeniable comfort in her presence, and I found myself drawn to her inescapably.

As the atmosphere hung with anticipation, her words floated gently, laden with an inviting appeal. “Ray,” her voice, a soothing cadence, enfolded me, “Would you like to hang out later?”

---

“Is it a date, then?” My coworker sported a knowing smirk as she posed the question, nonchalantly returning some change to the cash register.

A blush crept across my cheeks, and I shifted my gaze, averting my eyes from her in the midst of my embarrassment. Amidst the quiet moment, her faint chuckle reached my ears, a subtle acknowledgment of my flustered reaction. While I diligently organized the cups within the drawer, I responded, my attention still focused on the task at hand. “Nah, we’re just planning to hang out after my shift,” I murmured, my tone nonchalant.

With the cash register securely closed, she turned toward me, her gaze locking onto mine. “Dude, it’s totally a date,” she declared with unwavering determination, her conviction carrying through her words.

“Whatever,” I grumbled, irritation lacing my undertone. With careful deliberation, I closed the drawer cradling the cups, my attention momentarily flickering to the café’s scattered tables. Yet, it was Hazel who drew my gaze like an irresistible force. Seated in contented ease by the window, she seemed absorbed in the café’s tranquil ambiance, the pages of her book capturing her attention.

As I continued to gaze at her, a sense of enchantment swirled around me, momentarily whisking me away to a realm where only she existed. Yet, my reverie was abruptly shattered by a familiar voice slicing through the air. “Ray, once you’re finished with the cups, you can call it a day,” my boss announced, jolting me back to the present moment.

The bartender’s voice chimed in from the back, near the coffee maker, tinged with a trace of envy. “Lucky break, Ray.”

“Good luck on the date,” my boss added before departing toward the rear of the café.

As I stood there, somewhat dumbfounded by my boss’s remark, my coworker couldn’t resist a teasing chuckle. “Told you he knew.”

---

After neatly hanging up my apron and retrieving my coat from the locker, I left the staff break room and reentered the café. Passing by the counter, I casually informed, “I’m off.”

My boss nodded in acknowledgment. As I made my way, the bartender at the back offered a wave and a parting sentiment, “See you tomorrow, Ray.”

“Have fun, dude,” my coworker interjected, a cheeky grin spreading across her face.

Her response rankled me slightly, prompting me to opt for ignoring her as I redirected my attention to Hazel’s table. Stepping closer, I positioned myself beside the chair opposite her.

“Hey,” I said, drawing her attention.

Lifting her gaze from the book cradled in her hands, she greeted me with a warm smile. “Hi! I thought your shift still had another hour left.”

“My boss decided to let me off early today...” I replied, taking a seat in the chair across from her. Starting the conversation, I leaned in slightly, my curiosity piqued. “I’ve been meaning to ask, what book is that?”

With an evident enthusiasm, she answered, “Oh, Redemption of the Fallen Angel! Have you heard of it?” Her excitement prompted her to showcase the book cover, inviting me to catch a glimpse.

Shaking my head, I responded, “No, I haven’t. Is it worth the read?” As I leaned back in my chair, I continued, “Angels are such intriguing beings, aren’t they?”

My reply seemed to give her pause, as if she were lost in thought for a moment. However, it soon appeared to ignite a spark of interest in her. Her eyes lit up with passion as she replied, “Absolutely. Angels are endlessly fascinating.”

Once again, that strange yet soothing sensation enveloped me as our gazes connected. “Yeah,” I murmured softly, momentarily entranced by the intensity of her stare. A gentle silence draped over us, prompting me to swiftly introduce a new topic to maintain the flow of our conversation. “I’ve been engrossed in this one angel-themed book during my breaks here at work,” I mentioned, nodding subtly toward the café’s rear break room, before being drawn once more into the captivating depths of her sky-blue eyes.

Sensing my gaze upon her, a faint blush graced her cheeks, barely perceptible before she turned her face aside. “So, would you like to go somewhere?” she asked, smoothly transitioning the conversation.

Gathering my thoughts, I followed suit by shifting my gaze elsewhere, my fingers nervously scratching the back of my head, a hint of shyness creeping in. Summoning my courage, I replied, “Sure, anywhere in particular?”

“Would you be up for a walk around the park?” she suggested with a friendly offer, her voice soft and inviting.

---

As the city’s evening lights flickered to life and the sun descended gracefully, the sky underwent a breathtaking transformation. It unveiled a captivating array of gentle hues, each passing moment shifting the once-vibrant blue canvas into a mesmerizing spectacle of soft colors. Walking past the park’s entrance gates, a brisk, cold city breeze brushed against my face, making its presence keenly felt. Seeking warmth, Hazel instinctively embraced herself, her voice tinged with a shiver as she remarked, “Can you feel the night breeze?”

I replied softly, “Here,” and carefully removed my coat, draping it over her shoulders.

Her response was appreciative. “Thank you. You’re sweet,” she said, pulling the coat closer around herself.

Caught slightly off guard by her words, I averted my gaze and focused on the path ahead. “It’s really nothing,” I responded modestly.

A comfortable silence settled between us as we continued our stroll through the park. Eventually, we reached a pond, its calm glassy surface painted with the hues of the sky. The silence was broken by Hazel’s voice. “Took you long enough, didn’t it?” she teased, looking at me with a smile.

“What do you mean?” I asked, my brow furrowing with confusion at her remark.

“To ask me out...” She replied, her gaze momentarily drifting towards the tranquil pond. “You think I haven’t noticed? You’ve been stealing glances at me for quite some time now,” she added, a subtle hint of playfulness infusing her voice.

Caught off guard by her comment, I followed her lead, shifting my attention to the pond, and a soft chuckle escaped my lips. “Well, I guess I’m not as subtle as I thought,” I admitted, sheepishly scratching the back of my head.

Hazel glanced at me and responded, “No, you’re not. I’ve noticed it for a while now.”

With a playful glint illuminating my eyes, I couldn’t resist but quip, “You, my coworker, and my boss should definitely start a club.” A smirk played on my lips as I dramatically gestured with my hand, conjuring an imaginary sign in the air. “The ‘Ray is Too Obvious’ Club,” I declared with mock seriousness.

Hazel’s laughter filled the air, thoroughly enjoying our banter. She couldn’t help but join in and asked, her voice tinged with amusement, “Is that why your boss let you off early?”

Caught slightly off guard, a grin found its way onto my lips, and I replied with a hint of jest, “Well, who knows? Maybe my secret membership in the ‘Ray is Too Obvious’ Club played a part.”

Skepticism danced in her eyes as she countered with her own playful remark, “Did it really, now? I find that hard to believe.”

A bashful smile adorned my face as I lightly scratched my head, admitting, “Truth be told, my coworker might have given me a little nudge to ask for your name and number...” Turning my gaze toward her, our eyes locked, and I continued, “...and somehow, that seemingly small gesture set off a chain of events that led us to this moment.”

Her smile expanded, and she gently interjected, “I suppose sometimes it takes a little nudge from fate to bring two people together,” nudging me lightly with her elbow, her touch soft and playful. “But I’ll confess, I’ve been stealing glances too.”

In that moment, a comfortable silence descended once more, coinciding with the sun’s final descent and the emergence of nightfall. The park’s lamplight illuminated our path, casting a gentle and inviting radiance upon our surroundings.

The silence eventually gave way to a chuckle that escaped my lips. “This might sound odd, but there’s something about you that makes me feel as though I’ve known you for a lifetime,” I revealed, my words carrying a sense of whimsy.

Hazel scoffed playfully at my fanciful confession before retorting, “That can’t possibly be true. We’ve only just met...” She paused mid-stride, fixing me with a mischievous grin, “...unless you’re about to tell me that you also experience a strange sensation when our eyes meet.”

Abruptly, I came to a halt, my stride interrupted as I locked my gaze onto hers. In that singular moment, her words resonated within me, and that strange yet familiar sensation surged over me, holding me in its grip.

A delicate white feather drifted past my face, setting off a cascade of enchanting visions in my mind. It unveiled a realm of ethereal beauty, where awe-inspiring landscapes stretched to the horizon’s edge. Celestial gardens burst forth with vibrant flowers, and waterfalls tumbled down majestic mountains. A gentle breeze carried the scent of blossoms and the strains of otherworldly melodies.

“It is you…” Hazel murmured softly under her breath, her sky-blue eyes shimmering with a faint, ethereal glow. “I have found him,” she declared aloud.

As her words hung in the air, an unexplainable energy rippled through the surroundings, sending a shiver down my spine. I became acutely aware of the presence of two figures looming behind me, their aura casting an undeniable heaviness that seemed to distort the very fabric of reality.

Without warning, a sudden force struck the back of my head, sending me stumbling from my position. Time stretched and twisted, each moment elongated in slow motion. I descended in a seemingly weightless descent, my surroundings blurring and darkening.

“I found you, my angel,” her voice echoed in my ears, the words resonating like a haunting melody. It was the last sound that reverberated within my consciousness before everything faded to darkness.
