Chapter 1
Temi had always known that her family was poor, but it wasn't until her father's unexpected death that she realized just how dire their situation was.
With no life insurance and mounting medical bills, her mother was forced to take on multiple jobs just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Temi's younger sister, Debby, was only 14 years old and still in high school. Temi felt a sense of responsibility to take care of her and make sure she had a better life than they did. That's why Temi had been determined to find a good job after college, to help support her family and make them proud. She knew she needed to help out, but at only eighteen years old and with no work experience, she didn't know where to start.
Desperate for any opportunity, Temi jumped at the chance to interview for a secretary position at one of the largest company in the city The job would be demanding, with long hours and a notoriously difficult boss but Temi was determined to make it work.
She showed up to the interview in her best dress, trying to ignore the gnawing feeling of inadequacy in her stomach. As she sat in the lobby waiting to be called in, she couldn't help but overhear the hushed whispers of the other candidates. They all seemed so polished and put together, and Temi couldn't help but feel like an outsider.
