Chapter 1
There was once a cottage in the middle of a field many years ago. It looked as neat as a picture with more plants than a gardening center. In that cottage lived 4 cats. The mother, was a kind and gentle soul but likes to keep the cottage tidy.
There was also three little kittens. The eldest, Hunter was a confident young chap, out of the three, he is the most likely to climb on top of the house and get told off. He usually was the one making a mess around the house.
The next one, Leo was a shy young kitten, he had more white fur than the other two, on his head, in the shape of a cross. He's the one who's most likely to watch and say to his brother not to climb up or he'll get into trouble.
The youngest was named Rue, she was the only girl and the smallest out of the three kittens. She rarely spoke, only speaking when their mom asked her something. Usually it was "Yes mother dear." She is the one that's more likely to read a book while her brothers were arguing.
Now what happed to their father was no mystery. He left their mother when they were barely two, to be with another cat named Sophie. They never saw from their father again.
It had been eight long years since he left and the kittens have long forgotten about him. In fact, they haven't met any other soul other than their mother. They, in fact, never left the cottage.
The day that changed the course of their small lives was on an cold November day, when they smelt their mother baking pie.
"My, my Mother's making pie, please be lemon pie, there're the best." Leo said as he smelt the warm, delicious air.
"No," said Hunter "It'll be apple pie, like usual." He then rolled his eyes at his brother. Leo then huffed as he then asked his sister.
"What type of pie do you think mom is making?"
No answer. As usual. Rue just looked at Leo and just shrugged. She then started reading her book. "You know that there's a person with your name in that book who dies right?" Hunter said.
Rue just shrugged.
The smell was getting stronger. "Come on siblings," announced Hunter "The pie is nearly ready."
They then stopped what they were doing and then went over to the kitchen. The warm smell of apple pie filled the room. "Told you I was right." mumbled Hunter.
Leo just huffed. But then they spotted their mother, pulling the pie out of the oven. "It's hot, we'll have it it half an hour- where are your mitten?" She asked.
Dammit, thought Leo, knew we forgotten something.
Their mother always wanted them to wear their mittens when they are eating, it's because she didn't want germs to spread. She then glared at her three children and then said "If you don't find them, you'll have no pie."
All three then gasped, they never missed a pie yet and this shall not be the first. "Yes, mother," said Hunter "We'll find our mittens."
And then all three left the room.
"So, siblings, where did we last have our mittens?" asked Hunter. Both the others thought for a minute before Rue answered
"It was three days ago, when Mother finished washing our mittens, I think we put them in our mitten box."
"But where the hell is our mittens." asked Hunter, glaring at Rue. But she managed to keep her cool and just took a deep breath. But luckily, Leo managed to answer that question
"Oh we put them in that cupboard under the stairs, I think it was because we were watching Harry Potter and it was the first thing that came into our minds."
They all then nodded as they then rushed over to the cupboard under the stairs. "Rue, you look, you got sharper eyes that us boys have." Leo said.
Rue then nodded as she then opened the door and then looked around. It was dark but she could just make out a red box. The mitten box. She then grabbed it though it felt heavier than usual but she just guessed it was just her imagination.
She then got out of the cupboard under the stairs. "You got it little sis?" asked Hunter.
She then nodded and gave it to him. He then opened it and there were the mittens. Red for Hunter, Green for Leo and Pink for Rue. They then put their mittens on but then Hunter said "Look, there's something else in here."
"What do you mean?" Asked Leo.
"Here." he then threw something at Leo who did manage to catch it. He looked at it. It was a dark, leather book with red writing on it. There was only one sentence.
This is an interesting book.
"Hey, Rue, is this one of your books?" he asked.
Shake.
Rue then went over to Leo and then read the title and then shook her head again.
Hunter was curious of why his siblings were still staring at that book. He then went over to them and then said "Let me read it, I don't know why you both are curious?"
He then snatched it from Leo's hands and then read it. Stupid title, he thought but something about it. Something. It seemed that it could be interesting.
"Maybe we can read it after pie." Leo suggested. They all nodded as Hunter then rushed up the stairs to put it in their room. Hunter then went in their room, looking for a place to put it.
Under one of the beds, he thought, nah that'll be too obvious.
Under his pillow, he thought, that's better.
He then put it under his pillow and then rushed downstairs, ready for apple pie.
