Prologue
It's a somewhat normal morning for Sage. She woke up at 11am in her small Seattle apartment and started her morning routine.
Today was Friday but Sage was fired from her job so it felt more like a casual Monday morning.
She used to work at a nightclub which she actually liked, but, unfortunately, her boss took a special liking towards her and when she didn't give him what he wanted, he fired her.
Sage wasn't too shocked though. She had already predicted it in her dream the night before, so she had the whole day to mentally prepare for what's about to happen.
You see, Sage isn't really normal. She is a witch. A sorcerer if you want to call it. She can move things without touching them. She has visions although they come quite rare. Usually in dreams or just in a flash of a moment. She can heal and do spells.
She somehow knew her whole life that she is different but never dared to talk about it to anyone. Better to just stay quite and out of sight.
She is still learning though and has a lot more work to do to get into a coven she thinks she will finally feel safe and at home.
Practicing magic is quite hard and usually takes most of their supernatural lives to master everything. But she needed just a little extra push and practice to pass the Warlocks exam which was coming up faster than she liked.
If she passes, she would move to a remote island on the West coast of US and Mexico where the coven is located. That's biggest coven on her side of the globe with a tight community.
The biggest issue she is facing right now, is her inability to have the balance within herself and ground her energy which is the final task of that exam- teleportation. But you could say she got the short end of a straw because how could she have a calm mind and a full heart after everything that has happened to her.
Sage has struggled most of her life with her self worth and attachment issues. She lost her parents in a tragic house fire when she was nine. Her legal guardian became her aunt, Nora, from her mother's side, but was put up for adoption because Nora already had a family of her own. Having her sisters child would just complicate things too much. And so with that, Sage became an orphan as she had no other relatives. She was dragged from one orphanage or foster home to another because of the bullying or people were adopting for the wrong reasons.
That was until one day an old lady came to the orphanage. She seemed to know what to look for exactly and picked the 17 year old orphan girl in the first 2 minutes of being there. This wasn't just a coincidence, the old lady was a witch, just like Sage, that had seen her in a vision and wanted to help her, well, that at least is what she told Sage.
Now 73 year old lady, Faith, the irony, has been Sages teacher, mentor and a loving grandma, she never had, and maybe even the best thing that has happened to her.
The first 3 years of Sages new life were filled with spells, potions, meditations, visions and some more supernatural things. Besides that, the young adult also worked full time at the closest café.
Can't be living with a grandma in a shed in the middle of the forest forever. That's the greatest cockblock known to man kind.
Now Sage has been living alone for the past 2 years and is loving every moment of it, still visiting that old women 4x times a week and doing her homework that she gives her.
Those usually include reading out-dated books, growing some stubborn plants, practicing small spells and brewing potions of her own while trying not to burn down her small loft apartment.
Sage was just about to eat her breakfast when an owl started to knock on her window with its beak. She put down her plate on the coffee table and with a rush opened the window that the owl was still continuously banging on.
This was Faiths messenger—a gray owl with a letter tied to it.
Sage sighed. She tried to teach that old women something about technology but to no avail. Now the only thing she can hope for, is that the window doesn't give in someday from the birds repeated banging.
After petting the owl and saying her fair-well to the animal, she closed the window with Faiths letter in hand. She sat back down on the couch, eager to see what she is up to now.
My dear,
Hope you're doing well.
I am writing to you to inform about something that I am working on and I want to ask a big request from you. Due to my old age, I cannot do it myself, so I would be very grateful for you to do it for me and I also think that this would benefit your last preparations before the exam.
There is a new potion that I am working on by demand from the Sorcerer Council. I need a few herbs from a special meadow where many witches and warlocks have walked and blessed it.
It is quite far and it will take some time- no more than a two weeks. But I truly see this being your key to passing the exam.
Tomorrow another owl will come by and give you further instructions.
With love,
Faith
Sage has always laughed at how formal the old lady writes her letters and how much of a goofball she is in real life.
Leave everything here for weeks?
Key to my exam...
Didn't seem so bad when she really thought about it. She had nothing better to do here anyways. No job. A few friends that seemed very busy lately. Maybe even too busy to text her back. Her one night stand is the only one hitting up her phone these past few days. Pathetic.
Why is adulthood so depressing?
