The sound of the alarm clock brought Scarlett out of the unfortunate nightmare she was having, well after wining so many cases having good dreams was something that was impossible for her these days.

she groaned as she stepped out of her bed and made her way to the bathroom, she stared at her disheveled hair and makeup stained face and rolled her eyes, as fast as she could she took her bath and washed her hair, she had a big day today, today, she was going to take a step higher in her career, Becoming the official lawyer of Roman black was a position many lawyers in the country lobbied for, Mr Roman Black was the most richest man in the world presently and any lawyer representing him would automatically have a place at the A.B.A and that was every practicing lawyers dream.

she picked a Red suit that she had gotten for this very day and a matching stilettoes, after getting dressed she put her hair in a pony tail and applied little make up, after taking a look at her reflection in the mirror she nodded her head in satisfaction, she picked her car keys from the table and made her way out of the house.

As she drove to the office to have a final meeting with her superiors before moving to the black empire she couldn’t help but smile, she had worked so hard to get to where she was now and she was proud of her achievement, she came from nothing, even though there were many reasons to quit along the line but she didn’t give up and now all her efforts has paid off.

“Good morning ma’am” the guard greeted her at the gate after she parked her car.

“Morning ” She said and entered the office.

She Had a bright smile plastered on her face as she greeted everyone, this would be the first time she was happy being in the office, she headed straight to the directors office to get her transfer papers and salary.

“Good morning Scarlett” Mr Anthony said.

“Morning Anthony” Scarlett replied.

“Here is your transfer letter and her is you last official pay check from us, I wish you the best of luck, you deserve this” Anthony said and handed two envelopes to her.

“Thanks and I really don’t need luck, am too practical for that” Scarlett said and left his office.

“that’s Scarlett for you” Antony murmured.

“Well, well, well, leaving without telling your best friend? am hurt Scarl” Zoe said as she entered Scarlett’s office.

“Cant leave without you and you know that, on the contrary I planned on treating you for dinner later today to celebrate” Scarlet said with a smile on her face.

“Really? you? treat me to dinner? You?, sorry don’t blame me if i don’t buy that, cause even tho we are both lawyers you are more busier than the president, the last time you had fun was what? high school grad?, you weren’t even present at our law school graduation party remember? so don’t blame me if i don’t believe you” Zoe said.

“Well this is different Zoe I am taking you out tonight, but I have to leave now, don’t want to be late on my first day” Scarlett said and gave her best friend a kiss on the cheek and left.

Zoe placed her hands on her cheek and brought it to her lip, she has had feelings for Scarlett ever since they were in high school, Scarlett was her dream woman, she was the love of her life, but unfortunately she couldn’t tell her, because Scarlett didn’t have the time for love talk more of being with a woman, and she couldn’t loose her completely so she stayed her bestie even though she wanted much more.

When Scarlett arrived at the black empire building she was greeted by many employee’s of the company and was led to Mr Blacks office by his secretary, her previous office didn’t hold a candle to the black empire, the interiors was as beautiful as the exterior and it did live up to it name, its walls were made up of Black marble and it was really a beautiful sight to behold.

“Please wait here, i’ll inform Mr Black of your presence” The secretary said as she ushered her into a waiting room.

“Okay, Thanks” Scarlett said.

Twenty minutes later the secretary came back to take her to Mr Blacks Office, the corridor that led to his office was decorated with black and a little hint of Gold, Almost everything at the office was black even tho Scarlett didn’t have issue with colours, she couldn’t help but dislike it a little.

“You can go in” the secretary said as she pulled open one of the double doors in front of them.

The door was made of black marble and it stood so high, which made Scarlett wonder how Mr Ramon was, his love for black was something else, she gave the secretary a smile and entered the office.

“Good morning sir” Scarlett said as she approached the big mahogany marble black desk in front of her

“What’s Good About the morning Scarlett Amelia Finn” Mr Roman said and twirled his chair around to face her.

For the first time in her life Scarlett was speechless, the man in front of her could be called a Greek god, his hair was as dark as the night sky and his piercing grey eyes were as deep as ash, but that wasn’t what made her speechless, his rude reply took the words out of her mouth.

“I Believe there’s Nothing atrocious about it” Scarlett said.

“Then your believe is sadly witless” Roman said.

“I choose to differ sir” Scarlett said.

“You are an hour late on your first Day” Roman said his brow knitted together in a frown.

“I’m sorry but that isn’t true on the contrary I am an hour early, my meeting with you is scheduled for ten a.m. and this is nine” Scarlett said a bit annoyed at his behaviour.

“If you will work for me then you know I am the law and order, if I say you are late, then Scarlett Amelia Finn you are late, And I hate people who are Tardy” Roman said.

“The last thing I’ll ever be is Tardy Mr Black cause I don’t tolerate tardiness either that’s why I came an hour early, And yes i will work for you but i want to believe me being in your employ doesn’t mean my integrity or worth would be insulted, or does it?” Scarlett asked with a brow raised.

“Your office is Opposite mine, Now Get To Work Scarlett” Roman said with a frown plastered on his face.

“Thank you sir” She said and made her way out of his office.

“Miss Finn” Roman called before she stepped out of the office.

“Sir”

“Red is too bright for this company, study your environment, thought you were the best?” Ramon said.

“Duly Noted Sir, and.....I Am The Best” Scarlett said and closed the door.

“What a pain” she muttered under her breathe.

“Ma’am I’ll show you to your office” the secretary said to her startling her a little

Scarlett Nodded And followed her, well as Mr Black said, her office was indeed directly opposite his, and was it disappointing, the interior of her office was the same with his, black, as well as every other thing in this company and his attitude.

“Welcome to Black Empire Miss scarlet, I wish you all the best” The secretary said.

“Thank you, and I didn’t get your name” Scarlett said.

“Its Emma, Emma William” Emma said with a smile on her face.

“Nice to meet you Emma” Scarlett said.

“Same here, i should allow you get settled, call me if you need anything, I’m also your secretary pending when you get one” Emma said and left.

“Well hello Black Empire, I’m going to do my best and get this over with as soon as possible” Scarlett said to herself.

Even though she knew being here was threading on dangerous waters, and reopening wounds that has been sealed for ten years now.

She had no choice than to be here.

After getting settled and arranging her desk to her taste Scarlett decided to go through the files on the system, according to her employment letter she was to study the files the former lawyer left and clear up any unfinished business he or she may have left behind.

To her surprise she found so many law suites that Mr Ramon filled and most of them were unreasonable, he filled a law suit against an old woman for walking to slow, another against his laundry man for not folding the collar of his shirt properly, Another against his chef cause the steak she served for dinner wasn't properly seasoned and so on and so forth, Scarlett didn't know if she was suppose to be mad that she would be going to court for things as silly as this or laugh at how childish Mr Ramon was, so she decided to ask him about them, she transferred the file to her mac book and left for his office.

She met Emma at the door of his office with her head down and she couldn't help but wonder why the cheerful Emma was sad, but then she remembered her own conversation with Ramon and it all made sense.

"Hey.. are you okay?" Scarlett asked.

"yes i am, its nothing don't mind me" Emma said and immediately the sad expression was gone and she was back to her cheerful self which made Scarlett raise a questioning brow at her.

"You want to see the boss?" Emma asked.

"Yes, I actually have somethings to discuss with him, about some cases he filled" Scarlett said.

Emma's mood swing was off the wall but she knew better than to push it, if this cheerful facade she had going on was her way of dealing with things then who was she to question it, besides she knew nothing about her and she also had to deal with Ramon and these unnecessary court cases.

"You can go in" Emma said with a bright smile plastered on her face.

"Thanks" Scarlett said and walked pass her.

She put her thumb print on the door and it opened up for her, and just like the first time Ramon had his back to her, but this time around he was standing, and that's when she came to the conclusion that the tabloids didn't do justice in their description of Ramon, they said he was six feet tall but the man in front of her was six five, even without being close to her, he towered over her.

"What do you want Scarlett Amelia Finn?" he asked without turning to face her.

"I have somethings to discuss with you" Scarlett said.

"Obviously, Get to the point" He said and turned to face her.

"I was going through the files that your previous lawyer left behind and i discovered that you have twenty four unwarranted law suites filled and i would like to know why" Scarlett said and handed her mac book to him which he just stared at.

"And?" he asked with an unreadable expression on his face.

"As your lawyer i feel the cases should be withdrawn" Scarlett said.

"You came all the way here to tell me how you feel?" he asked with a brow raised.

If the case was different Scarlett would have complimented on his perfectly carved brows, but with this man always constantly trying to get on her nerves, his perfectly carved brows could how hell.

"I came here to give you legal advice as your lawyer, we don't need all this cases cause they are unnecessary sir" Scarlett said.

"unnecessary or you are just incompetent?" he said.

"I am far from incompetent sir, but the fact that these cases are uncalled for can't be over emphasised" Scarlett said trying to control her rising temper.

"leave Scarlett come back when you have something reasonable to discuss, am too busy to encourage such futile conversations, you are a lawyer not a pest...act like one" Ramon said and turned his back to her.

Scarlett was caught between giving him a piece of her mind and leaving quietly, but after thinking about it, giving him a piece of her mind would be a foolish thing to do so she left the office without saying a word, but one thing was sure, Mr Ramon Black hated her guts and he was ready to make working here a living hell for her, but something he was forgetting was that it takes two to tango and she would do everything in her power to keep her reputation intact and not even him would put a dent on it.

When she got to her office she let out the breathe she has been holding, and began pacing back and forth, she had to find a solution to the problem at hand, all this law suites were uncalled for and she going to court for this would only bring her down from the pedestal she has placed herself, after pacing for almost ten minutes she still didn't come up with a solution, the fact that she couldn't withdraw the cases without his consent only made things harder, after much thinking she decided to burry herself in work and come up with a plan later.

The sound of her phone ringing brought her out of the immense work she had thrown herself into, she checked the caller id and it was a call from her dad, she let out a breathe and picked.

"father" Scarlett said.

"Congratulations child, you have made me proud" he said.

"thank you father" She said unsure of what to say.

Her relationship with her father was a formal one, While growing up he treated her like a client, he was always there for her but they never had this father and daughter bond, he was the father that shows up for a school event but not for a walk in the park or family gathering, but he made sure she followed in his foot steps as a lawyer and for the first time in her life he just told her he was proud of her.

"keep doing better"he said and ended the call.

Scarlett sighed and dropped her phone on the table, she tilted her neck from left to right to ease the slight pain she felt at the back of her neck, her phone began to ring again but this time it was her best friend and Scarlett almost face palmed herself , she checked the time on her smart watch and discovered it was already pass seven and she knew zoe eats her dinner around six, she had been so immersed in work that she totally forgot her plans with her.

"I can explain" scarlet said immediately she picked the call.

"explain?, Scarlett this is who you are, you never make it to anything, you always have an explanation, i was a fool to think this time would be different" Zoe said.

"I'm sorry Zoe i truly....." Scarlett began to say but before she could complete the statement Zoe ended the call.

She sighed and placed the phone back on the table, she was officially having the worst first day at work and honestly this wasn't what she hoped for, but life has never been easy on her not even this time around
