Prologue: Kiera
The world as we know it has been forever changed. Out of the blue during a very normal day, a bright violet light covered the sky all over the world. Over the next few days people started showing signs of having special powers. Everyone quickly realized that what was happening was that magic was being awakened in certain people. They started to call themselves Chalice’s because they held magic within themselves. Things were ok at first but then problems started to arise when a handful of Chalice’s were caught trying to use their powers for a devious purpose.
Most people weren’t afraid of them, my family was one of those affected by magic suddenly appearing in our world. My stepmother and stepbrother were some of the first ones to show signs of power. My stepmother Darla was able to wield the earth like it was playdough, changing its shape and bending it to her will. It started off small, but her powers grew rapidly. Her emotions caused it to be unstable at times. My stepbrother could create lightning and control the lightning around him. His power too was tied to his emotions at first, but he quickly showed that he could control it and not be a danger.
Then one day that all changed. Darla and my father were having an argument over something small that quickly grew into something much worse. She started to lose her hold on her power and the ground started to shake beneath the house. It quickly turned into an earthquake that caused so much damage to our neighborhood. But most of all it destroyed our house…with me in it. My father got out in time and didn’t realize I was still inside till it was too late to get me out.
My stepmother tried to help by moving the rocks and debris so that help could get to me, I was rushed to the hospital and was in a coma for 3 months so they could repair the damage to my body. I never blamed my stepmother; I know she didn’t do it on purpose she has been the only mother figure I have ever known, and I know she would never have hurt me on purpose. But my father wasn’t so understanding he saw it as she tried to kill me to get back at him because she was angry with him. It forever skewed his view on Chalice’s. His hatred started to grow and grow with each passing day that I was in my coma. When I finally came out of my coma my stepmother and stepbrother had gone into hiding because my father was on a war path. He decided that they and all Chalice’s were evil and must be eradicated from the world.
Shortly after getting out of the hospital a new problem arose. I started to show signs of having powers of my own. I was so terrified that I would be found out by my father. I quickly had to figure out how to hide it more than ever, because over the next few months the ‘Reaping’s’ started. A mass genocide of epic proportions people had created weapons that allowed non-Chalice’s to wield magic. They were called Holders and they used these new magic weapons to even the playing field and try to kill as many Chalices as they could.
After the first year of the Reaping, they discovered that babies were being born with powers and quickly realized they couldn’t truly eradicate the Chalice problem as they saw it. Soon the Leaders of the world decided that a cease fire needed to be called and they had to re-think how they went about the balance of life and power needed to go. Most of them realized that to really make life safe for those who don’t have powers. They needed to create separate schools for Chalices so they could hone their powers and learn to control them. They also did the same for Holders to be able to learn to wield magic weapons to keep the scales in balance. I went to a Holders school and quickly found weapons that would conceal my powers. It was risky but it was the only chance I had to survive as long as I did. They were like boarding schools so I would live in the dorms while at school and only see my father very little which was key to keeping my secret.
My childhood best friend Mina and I both got into a special College that accepts both Chalices and Holders to try and bring them together to be more unified. I thought it would be the best College to continue to help hide my true abilities. It’s even better that she and I are roommates, but bad luck that we will have to share a house with 4 other people. All the buildings are co-ed so you truly never know who you will be living with….
