Summary

High school freshman Jeff Downey has a problem. How does he stop a suicidal god willing to go to to go to any lengths to end his own life, even if it means ending all life on earth in the process? It turns out that all those Greek myths are true stories, more or less. Granted, they’re not entirely accurate, since Zeus was just a man who crowned himself a god, and science, not magic, was the source of his power. No one remembers any of that today - least of all Jeff Downey, a geeky teen in Southern California who is far more interested in Planet Krypton than Mt. Olympus. That changes when an ageless stranger infuses Jeff with all the superpowers of his comic book heroes, but Jeff soon discovers that he’s been thrust onto the front lines of a war that started centuries before recorded history. With the unlikely help of Lisa Meyer, a pretty cheerleader way out of his league, Jeff works to unravel ancient mysteries in order to save the world. But Jeff and Lisa finds themselves outmatched by an immortal with a death wish. How do you stop a suicidal god willing to go to to go to any lengths to end his own life, even if it means ending all life on earth in the process?

PROLOGUE

I’m committing suicide. Tradition, therefore, demands I leave a note, even though no one on the planet will be left alive to read it.

The plan, hatched and executed over the course of countless generations, will finally flood the earth with fire, finishing the work that I began in antiquity. I will die, and so will everyone else. Of course, everyone else was going to die of something, eventually, anyway. Not me.

So consider this both a note and a receipt. Life on this planet began in a puddle of evolutionary goo billions of years ago. Let it now be recorded that it will end on an inauspicious Saturday night football game at an obscure high school in Topanga, California.

If a pair of human eyes ever sees this, then I congratulate you. You are a living testament to the fact that my plan has failed.

But you will still die eventually. So there’s that.

Nerd World

Kiran: I liked the insight into the nerd world. The way that author narrates that the typical hierarchical high school popularity system portrayed in 90's movies has become old is refreshing. Especially the way a jock supports a nerd in nerd versus nerd fight is quite amusing..and yes, it was nice to see ...
