Spirits (Pt1/?)

(a zukka fic i made up forever ago)

“Sir, I’m sorry that you have to lose your son, but the northern tribe needs an heir and you have two children. Surely you understand the situation, Chief Hakoda.” Chief Arnook pleaded with him.

Hakoda gave a resigned sigh. “Fine, you can take my son. Raise him as your own though..” he called Sokka into the meeting room. Sokka ran in with bright eyes and clung to his father. “Sokka.. You’re going to spend some time in the northern tribe, okay? It’ll be fun. I promise.”

Sokka beamed slightly. “Will I stay in the palace?”

Hakoda started to say something but was interrupted by Arnook. “Sokka, you’re going to be a prince in the palace.” That excited him even more.

After two days Sokka was packed and ready to leave. He hugged his grandmother and sister Katara and got on the boat to sail to the Northern Water Tribe.

When Sokka and Arnook arrived at the northern tribe they were celebrated. Not for long though…

Sokka absentmindedly walked closer to the crowd. In doing so he tripped over a piece of ice and fell into one of the northern tribes' many winding rivers.

The cheers all stopped and everyone froze. No one could react as their new prince drowned.

Sokka’s lungs were burning, he was in pain. He didn’t understand why it hurt so much. He was sinking- he couldn’t see. What was happening? Where were the cheers that had been there moments before? All in a moment his questions faded and his vision faded from blue to black.

It was pitch black for a few seconds, then all Sokka could see was blinding white, and the same went for the citizens of the northern tribe.

Sokka was shot up out of the water and placed on the snowy ground, leaving him coughing up a fit. He fell under consciousness as the crowd gave a weak cheer.

Arnook picked the boy up and brought him to the palace. While he was being carried, Sokka’s hair was shifting from dark brown to bright white, and Arnook came to the conclusion that Tui, the moon spirit had saved the prince’s life, and he thanked Tui over and over again that night.

Unfortunately for Sokka, it wiped his memories of his sister, father, and grandmother.

Fast forward 12 years and it’s Sokka’s 16th birthday. For it, there’s been a visitation planned by his father, Arnook, Fire Lord Iroh, and his niece and nephew.

In all honesty, he was excited about the visitation. He’d never met Iroh’s niece and nephew, Azula and Zuko. But he adored Iroh, so how bad could they be?

They were very bad. Azula kept trying to flirt with him, and Zuko was the most anxiety-ridden prince he’d ever met. He couldn’t look in Sokka’s direction without getting all flustered and nervous. At least he had Iroh’s company. And tea.

Sokka’s father had been pronounced sick the night before, and so Sokka himself was in charge of managing all the guests and keeping up social appearances.

They were about halfway through dinner when a crash was heard from the edges of the tribe. Sokka stood, quieting down the startled crowd. He assured them it was likely just the ocean crashing against their walls.

He was soon proven wrong as a teenage girl who couldn’t have been more than 15, and a boy with tattoos ran into the dinner hall, frantic, the girl yelling to have her brought to their leader while the boy stayed silent, curious next to her.

“I’m right here.” Sokka glared at her. “What is your name, and business here in the Northern Water Tribe?”

The girl looks up at him with shock. “Sokka?” she smiled at him, and Sokka was internally freaking out. She leaped forward and wrapped her arms around him, leaving Sokka without a response.

He took a few seconds to regain his thoughts. “You’re under arrest,” he growled down at her and nodded for the nearest guards to take her off of him and to the dungeons.

For the first time, the tattooed kid spoke up. “Wait-” he took a breath. “You can’t arrest her. As the avatar, I order you to keep her out of chains.”

Sokka was startled at that, not sure how to address the sudden statement. “The airbending avatar died 100 years ago to the Earth Kingdom and broke the cycle. If you’re the avatar, prove it.”

The boy hesitated. He made a few loaves of bread float, clearly airbending. “Now do you believe me?”

Sokka was silent for half a second. “Fine. But if you step out of line again, it’s to the dungeons for the both of you.” He glared at them and ordered the nearest guards to take them to a guest room.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters.
