The Alpha's Best Friend

I pace my room as I look at the black screen of my phone, waiting for him to text or call me.

Today my best friend is coming home.

I haven't seen him in 2 years so I'm so excited to see him.

He's been away at Alpha training, learning how to be an Alpha.

When we first became friends in kindergarten, he told me right away he was a werewolf.

If you're wondering I'm just human.

It's not uncommon to see werewolves around since the world we live in has multiple kinds of different creatures, but to be friends with one was really cool.

He couldn't shift into his wolf form until he was 10 so I didn't get to meet his wolf Ajax or Jaxy as I call him which he always growls at.

Axel always tells me Jax hates it when I call him that, but I'll never stop.

I check my phone again but still nothing.

He said he'd call or text me when he pulls onto the road, but still nothing.

When Axel first left I felt like a piece of my heart was missing.

You see I'm in love with Axel and have been since I hit that age where crushes start to happen.

Unfortunately since I'm not a werewolf we can't be together.

It hurts, but what really hurts is Axel feels the same way.

We haven't said it out loud, but when werewolves are around their mate they show it, and how he treats me is exactly how his parents treat each other.

If you're wondering I'm not his mate, but he treats me pretty close to one.

Creatures and humans can't be together for safety purposes.

Like most mates they can feel when the other is hurt and that could kill a human because we don't have special abilities to keep us alive, and got forbid if our mate dies we'll die too.

So as much as it hurts there's no way for us to be together.

Now with Axel coming home he'll be turning 21 in 6 months then he'll meet his mate.

When future Alpha's turn 18 they go off for Alpha training and come back before their 21st birthday because on their 21st birthday they find their mates.

All non Alpha werewolves find their mates at 18 and many centuries ago a spell was cast on Alpha's to only find their mate when their training is done.

It's confusing, but it ensures that the future alpha's get all the proper training they need to take over without the distraction of being away from their mate.

Apparently meeting your mate is like being in the honeymoon faze but 10 times more intense.

All this started because there were problems with other packs having Alpha's not be ready to take over because they didn't get the proper training done since they found their mate.

Axel's dad, Lucas talked with other Alpha's and they decided to do a trial with the spell and it's been 100% successful ever since.

Packs are stronger thanks to the spell and more and more packs all over the world are agreeing to using the spell.

It also helps that every pack has one or two witches, they keep the packs safe.

From what Axel has told me Gwen, their pack witch has helped their pack for quite a long time.

Gwen is best friends with Axel's mom Claire so she became a part of the pack when Gwen and Lucas met, and she actually fell in love with Alpha Lucas's Beta Alex.

I'm assuming you're wondering why a werewolf and a witch can be together but not a human and a werewolf?

Witches, even though they are basically human they are supernatural beings.

After he left for training I went to Gwen about casting a spell to make me become a werewolf, but she said there's no spell that exists since you have to be born a werewolf.

After hearing I had no way to be with him I went into a depression for about a month and luckily he was already at alpha training or else he'd be stuck to my side making the realization worse.

My phone buzzes in my hand and I quickly check it to see its Axel saying he just pulled into the road.

My stomach twists in knots as I wait for him to get here.

In the time he's been away we've texted, called, and video chatted with each other, but it's nothing compared to seeing each other in person obviously.

I just want to feel his arms around me and his body vibrating.

When I get out onto the front porch I lean on the railing and look up the road for Axel's black truck, but come up empty.

I look out into the distance and the scenery looks beautiful in the morning with the sun peeking over the mountains.

I love living in Colorado, and unlike most people I enjoy the cold too.

The sound of gravel crunching steals my attention.

Our road is a private road so we don't get much traffic considering our house and 2 neighbors across from us are the only ones on our road.

My heart picks up as I see Axel's black truck come into view.

I can't see anything inside since he has tinted windows, but he sees me because he speeds up and flies down my road to park in front of my house.

I'm racing down the steps to get to him as he's opening his door.

I'm in his arms before he can shut the door, making him fall into his seat, but still have a steady hold on me.

I tuck my head into his neck and inhale his familiar scent.

He chuckles. "I missed you too baby girl, fuck I couldn't wait to see you" He said roughly.

I squeeze him tighter. "I don't care what anyone says, I'm going on any trips with you next time from now on" I muttered against his skin.

I run fingers through the hair at the back of his head making him purr.

We hold onto each other for what seems like forever until my dad interrupts us.

"You couldn't let the boy get out of his truck before you tackled him?" My dad playfully called out behind me.

"You know how she is Rob" Axel said.

I hear them getting close so I detach from him so they can say hi.

When I step back my eyes go wide now that I can get a good look at him because before I just had tunnel vision and wanted to get into his arms.

I wanted a kiss, but can't have everything I want.

Axel sends a glare to me over my dad shoulder letting me know he heard my thoughts.

He can't read my mind or anything, but he can read my thoughts only when I'm having strong emotions.

I send him a sheepish smile and continue to check him out.

When he left at 18 he had a short haircut, almost like a buzz cut but not quite, no facial hair, and lean muscle.

I have to stop myself from drooling as I check him out and see all the new enhancements to his body.

His clothes look painted on him, like I can almost see his abs through his white shirt and as cliche as it is, his sleeves look like they're gonna rip any minute now, but I guess that's all thanks to being a werewolf.

He has really sexy facial hair going on and his hair is that tousled I just got out of bed look but still look hot.

If I thought just being friends with him before was difficult, it's a fucking challenge now.

I bite my lip and his navy blue eyes darken.

That was a month before he left for alpha training so it's been awhile.

My parents quickly catch up with Axel then head back inside.

Once they go back inside he wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me back into him.

I close my eyes and let out a sigh of content.
