Prologue

Blood

Fuck I hate blood

And it always seems

To follow me

Everything around me was destroyed. The trees moaned in the wind. Splintered wood covered the ground from the great fallen oaks. Everything once vibrant and green now decayed and red. So much red. Cries of the dying could be heard for miles. Cries of the dead could be heard for longer if you knew how to listen.

We were losing. I couldnt remember why I was here or what I was fighting for but it was over. I was determined to take down as many of these bastards as I could before it was all said and done. Whatever hatred for my enemy was seething through my rational thought and hindering my inhibitions.

Two soldiers rushed me weapons at the ready. The silver of their knives gleamed in their hands. Most other weapons were long gone at this point in the battle. At least half of my squad was gone. Now only the gods knew where the rest were. Now I was surrounded. Left with nothing but a shield and hunting knife I’d snagged off a body.

They charged at me ferociously. They were just as desperate as I was at this moment. I side stepped the first one and swung my knife for the other. I came up short but managed to knick his eye. He howled as he stumbled while I turned around waiting for the first one to come back my way. I threw myself at him and his blade slashed somewhere along my ribs but not deep enough to cause any real damage. His arm came down to land a blow but the battlefield became a blur as a shining light dropped from the sky.

After the shockwave the soldier turned back to me and before I could ready myself for the assault he suddenly dropped to the ground gutted before I could blink.

A women emerged across the field and everything around me seemed to disappear. There she stood in all her bloody glory. The earth trembled and none could hold her gaze. That is, except for me. Even as I beheld her with true reverie she didn’t so much as glance in my direction. Her brown hair cascaded around her. Pointed ears peaking out the sides. She looked out with those bright blue eyes that burned with blood lust across the field seeing that the enemy was destroyed.

Where had she been ? All these years and suddenly she appears before me with those cold eyes and not even sensing my presence. I was frozen. Stuck to this miserable spot as I spotted the one I cherished more than any other before me. Gone for so many long years and now this? Why couldn’t I move? Why couldn’t I speak?

Like a spell had been broken I dropped to my knees the moment her eyes locked to mine. No sign of recognition crossed them as she assessed me. Just bottomless pits of crystal blue despair. Someone behind her stepped out and his gaze locked on mine as well. Then the earth started to rumble again as they clasped hands and vanished into thin air. My beaten broken heart cracked even more.
