Chapter one: destiny, is that you?
My eyes flit open to find blank blackness all around me. I swivel on my heel, clutching the silver key that dangles from my neck, looking for signs of life, for a sign of something other than this cold blackness.
"Where am I? Is anyone there?" I ask the shadowy world around me.
A faint sound comes from somewhere in reply.
As I sprint around, looking frantically for the speaker, I stop. A chest. Small enough to fit in both my hands. It looks more like a box.
I walk over, still clutching the key that lay on my neck, bouncing on my chest. I pick up the small wooden box. The smooth, light wood feels nice against my skin. As I rub it with my thumb, I notice a silver keyhole. A keyhole! And I have a key! I shove the key into the box and turn it. It flies open, a silver locket with no chain, the shape of a wolf's head. It has a keyhole on the top.
I gently turn the key in. I yank the key, but it's stuck.
This is happening too fast, this feels unreal. Is this real? What is going on?!
Eagerly, I reach my thumb to open It.
But It flies open before I even touch It.
What?!
"This is bizarre..." I mumble.
Four pictures fall out.
They are of me.
Me!!
How is this possible?! I don't even wear these clothes! I wear emo clothes! (I AM NOT EMO THOUGH)
One is of me jumping off a dock. A dock! I'm afraid of the water! And I look...happy? I'm wearing a yellow summer dress that gradients to white.
Two is of me balled up, sulking in a corner. I am wearing black overalls paired with a blue blouse and sneakers.
Three is of me raging in a red tank top. My shorts are torn and black.
And four is just unsettling. It's blank. I don't know why but It's making me feel uneasy. It's like my fate is to be decided.
No. No. NO!
I can't do this! No! I sprint, the pictures magnet back into the locket. I rip the key out of the locket, but the small charm still hangs on. Like fate sealed. A new necklace. A new me?
None of this makes sense.
Rows of mirrors lay on the ground, the space in between them like a runway. A path.
The mirrors are labeled underneath with white tape.
Chapter one.
Chapter two.
Chapter three.
Chapter four.
Chapter five.
Chapter six.
Chapter seven.
Chapter eight.
Chapter nine.
Chapter ten.
Chapter eleven.
Chapter twelve.
And the creepy thing is they all have a picture.
A moving picture! No one in front, or behind, or at least, I think.
Creeak.
I stop. What was that noise?
Creeeak. SNAP! bump...
The mirrors fly up and chase me. CHASE ME?!
WHAT THE HELL?!
I sprint, mirrors flying after me. The close in. They bash me. No point in running now.
I huddle, head tucked, glass shards lodging into my skin. I look up. Every time they hit, they crack, the picture only distorting a bit.
One is of a girl with blonde hair that gradients into a flowy hot pink.
Another one containing me. ME AGAIN?!
In another, a gray silhouette of a boy leans against a locker.
And a can flying to the air. A can?
And the last one I see, a blank, gray face, no facial features, with flowy white hair flowing in front of the face. A red streak going down the bangs, leaking to the hair, the streak thickening as it travels down, down, down.
That's all I catch while I notice them separate, going backwards just to lunge forward and hit me, lodging more clear, smooth glass into my skin. But that's not what I notice. It's what I see through the cracks. I quickly count the mirrors. Eleven, where is the twelfth? More glass goes into my skin, blood oozing out of my forearm, forehead, and a tiny shard that draws a drop of blood on my thumb.
Thats when I notice that the thing through the cracks is the twelfth mirror. It's held up by what looks like a six-year-old me. Shaking with fear. Timid, shy. What I used to be. What is no longer...me.
The picture in the mirror is unharmed, and as I stare at It, everything goes in slow motion, I think.
It's expression changes from shy to happy. It's a boy with ruffly yet smooth jet-black hair and a white button up T-shirt over a sky-blue T-shirt. The blue jeans he wears flash in and out of the picture. His sky-blue eyes piercing into mine..
But I can't look anymore.
I huddle again and the pictures speed up back to their original speed and quickly get faster. Faster. And faster!
"HELP! SOMEBODY, PLEASE HELP ME!" I scream. Shards of glass begin to cover my body, each time it pierces my skin I let out a blood curdling rusty scream.
I slowly behind to rock, back, and forth, back, and forth, and then stop as I somehow shake so hard side to side that I tock side to side. I fall over on my side and let out a rusty scream as the glass digs deep into my muscles, my body soon almost completely coated in glass. I shake, like someone is rocking me. And time freezes. I slowly rock. I slowly open my eyes. And then...
