Chapter 1 - The Alpha
KILIAN
What makes a true alpha? His bloodline or the way he leads and supports his pack?
Our Alpha, John, may have been a true-blooded Alpha, but he screwed up in every way and was killed by his Gamma in front of an audience.
You heard right. His gamma killed him, even his beta was in favor of executing him.
The problem with all of this? John never found his mate. He, at forty-five, still had no children, even though he had women in his bed, apparently there was another problem. So our pack had no successor.
You could picture him as a grumpy, insufferable alpha who was constantly falling off the wagon and drowning his sorrows with it.
The whole pack was shocked by his death and no one really knew who would be the next leader. Alexander, the Gamma, and Max, the Beta, one of them, would have to take on this role.
My name was Kilian. I was thirty-one years old, son of Max the Beta. My dark blue eyes and dark blond hair made me look like every other male in the Crescent pack. We had Nordic ancestry, which is why most of us were blue-eyed and blond. There were exceptions: Our Gamma, for example, was with Chiara, a she-wolf who was part demon. His only daughter, Catherine, called Cate, was given to Arnor, the Alpha of the Ice pack.
John was completely in debt, going to Arnor's casino every night and gambling away even the pack's wealth, and apparently our pack was at the end of the line financially, so Arnor wanted Cate in exchange. Cate was a rare she-wolf, also part demon. You could tell by the strength she had, and her bite was almost lethal for a wolf.
We were all shocked when Liya came up to us, a four year old smart girl with blonde curls and blue eyes as well.
She was with Cate that day and had witnessed the scenario. Apparently John thought that Liya wouldn't be able to tell on him yet. John was wrong. I still remember the day Liya came up to me and told me that Cate had left. John had asked her to leave. She just didn't know where she'd gone.
The end of the song? When Alexander found out, he told the beta. Everyone was included, except John. Alexander knew the rules. It was forbidden to harm the alpha, as a pack member. In this case, the whole council decided otherwise. John was plunging us all into ruin and he had to be removed after this action, everyone agreed on that.
With the support of the entire council, Alexander grabbed John one night and beat the living daylights out of him.
That's the short version. I'm telling you because this story has had a huge impact on my life.
"Kilian? You're needed, you're supposed to go to the Beta." said Dion, my best friend. I looked at him, confused, but nodded. I was just in the gym, working out like I did every early morning.
It was important to me to be fit, not just to impress the ladies, no. It was important to me to be able to act in an emergency, so fitness and martial arts were my daily bread.
I got off the treadmill and wiped the sweat from my forehead with a towel.
Dion handed me the water bottle. I nodded my thanks and drank the bottle half empty. "Hydration is important for the skin," Dion said teasingly and grinned at me.
"Let's go before they get the birds again and go crazy," I said and ran off with Dion.
I was wearing sweatpants and a tank top. Most of my muscles were visible. You couldn't miss the fact that I was a fan of tattoos. My whole body was covered in them.
I walked into the Beta's office and everyone stared right at me.
It wasn't just the Beta, my father, but also his Gamma, the oldest council member and other important generals, such as those from the border patrol and our combat instructor.
The number wasn't exactly small and I wondered what they wanted from me of all people.
Yes, I was known for being the best of all the wolves. Especially since I was also a smart cookie. If you think I'm bragging, you're wrong. They are not my words.
With the Alpha no longer in existence, I nodded respectfully to everyone in the room, "Good morning, you've been looking for me?" I said to my father.
He nodded slightly, "Good to see you, Kilian. We had an extraordinary meeting and now we have to make a decision that includes you.
You must have heard the whole story with John?" he asked to make sure I was aware of everything.
I nodded slightly, "Yes, I'm aware of most of what's been going on." I confirmed to him.
He nodded understandingly, "Well, we discussed the need for a new leader, an Alpha. John has not left a successor, which is why the round will continue with the Beta. I am also relinquishing this position due to my age." He confirmed.
Alexander cleared his throat and looked at me: "I am also old enough and think that YOU will be our new Alpha. I'm also giving up the position," Alexander said, smiling slightly at me. I knew that Alexander didn't really have it easy. He had just lost his daughter and had other things on his mind than becoming Alpha.
Max, my father, took the floor again: "Alexander, it sounded good. We voted for you to become our alpha from today," he said, smiling as well.
Oh, wow... I had expected everything, but that I should take on the role of Alpha from today? I hadn't expected that.
No, seriously. A wave had just hit me. I couldn't believe they were serious. "You really mean it?" I asked again, to confirm.
Max nodded: "Yes, I'm serious, Kilian. We wouldn't know anyone better than you," he finally said, almost too proudly.
"I'm really surprised... Honestly, I don't know what to say to that. I mean, sure, my heart beats ONLY for the Crescent pack. I would be honored to take on the position of Alpha." I finally said and had to swallow hard.
Alexander patted me on the shoulder "That's our boy, he'll definitely do a better job than John," he finally said.
I had to look up at Alexander, even though I was a hundred and ninety centimetres tall, he was a good two meters tall and towered over every man in the room. He was the second Jason Momoa.
Max picked up the hammer.
"So I, Max, the beta of the Crescent pack, decide that Kilian Moor will be the new alpha of the Crescent pack. Are there any objections?" He looked around the room. When no one responded after a minute, he banged his hammer against the wooden plate provided.
"So, the alpha ceremony will take place tonight under the full moon." Max said and everyone in the room cheered.
I ran my hand through my hair in embarrassment and smiled. All the men in the room cheered, Dion and Mason even picked me up and carried me out cheering.
I leaned over to Dion who had his mouth stuffed with pancakes "Where's Chiara?" I asked him with a furrowed brow.
He looked around too: "I don't know, but what I do know is that she's about to go crazy because she can't find Cate yet. The entire patrol has searched everything, God knows where she is, maybe they killed Catherine too, the Ice pack is known for its brutality." Dion said, biting his lower lip.
I almost felt sick at the thought, because I had known Cate since I was a child and she was also my best friend.
Because I had never received an order from anyone, I was never really up to date with her search.
I had to change that now. She was a Crescent she-wolf, she belonged to us and only to us.
Speaking of which, I felt a gaze on me. Alexander was practically staring at me. I glanced at him and nodded for him to follow me out for a moment.
We both went into the next room and each sat down on an armchair.
"How far along are they with the search?" I asked him to bring me up to date.
He shrugged his shoulders "According to spies, she's nowhere to be seen on the farm, she's probably being held captive by them in the pack house, but we can't get that far with them." Alexander said and sighed softly.
"I'm really worried... Especially since the connection to her is getting weaker and Arnor is unpredictable." Alexander said.
"How is Chiara?" I asked him, biting my lower lip.
He looked at me sadly: "She's about to go crazy... You don't want to know what our house looks like. She's only been sleeping in Catherine's room since that night and doesn't come out." he said quietly.
"We'll find her, Alexander, I promise. I'll go and look for her myself." I said, convinced of myself, and stood up again.
"I want the whole team to be mobilized, only the border guards will stay in place, the rest will look for Catherine." I said.
Alexander nodded: "There's no time to lose, Kilian..."
I nodded in agreement and was already running out.
"Where are you going so quickly?" I heard my father's voice call out.
I turned to him and looked at him in confusion "Going about my duties?" I asked.
He smiled at me "I knew you would take this seriously from the start." he said and came closer to me.
"Listen, you know I'm an old hand by now too. I'm no longer the best person to carry out my role as Beta."
I paused at his words and looked at him confused "Dad... What are you trying to tell me? There's no better beta than you..." I finally said.
He nodded slightly "You may see it that way, but I disagree, son. I'm in favor of Dion taking my place. He's been a loyal friend to you for years and a terrific wolf. You would make the perfect team. Alexander would still be your gamma to advise you at all times," he said firmly.
I had to swallow at his words "Yes, Dion is great, but is that really your last word? Are you sure?" I asked him.
He nodded with a smile. "Don't worry about me, kid. It's all right," he said, patting me on the back.
"The Alpha room and office will be ready for you, you'll be able to move in today." He winked at me and left.
That was a good start...
