CHPATER 1 - RED

Red. A glowing color in the sky. Red can symbolize love and adoration. It can also symbolize hate and anger.

I hate werewolves! They disguse themselves as human, only to turn into a devilish monster. I wish the stupid full moon wouldn’t come so quickly. I angrily shut my door to my bedroom as i slowly walk down the stairs. My fists curl into balls, my nails digging into my palms as I sit on the couch.

I sigh a heavy breath as I try to focus on the TV in front of me. My parents were arguing in the other room about what to do with me. The full moon was in a few nights, and they had a business meeting to attend, so they couldn’t look after me. There was no one who knew about my “condition”. Their stupid son just had to go out at night on a full moon.

“Breaking news: Our president has just been shot. He was pronounced dead on scene and was shot at 12:30 this afternoon while on tour in Dallas, Texas. All of us human Americans are in mourning, and the threat faced by werewolves and communist vampires have become more intense in the wake of this devastating event.”

The TV continued, but I drowned it out as I ran to the kitchen to tell my parents the news.

“We can’t just leave Thomas here!” my mother cried.

My father shouted, “We can’t trust the human neighbors! Who’s to say what they’d do to our son!”

“What about the vampires, then? Hmm? They aren’t human!” My mother shouted, but my father wouldn't listen to her reasoning.

“But they’re communists! What if they turn our son!”

“Just-!”

They noticed me standing at the door.

“I agree with Mum, Dad. They are the safer option.” I silently say.“Fine. but you’re asking. You’re 15 now. You might be of legal age, but you're still a kid. Ask them if you can stay the night before the full moon. That's it.” Dad walks out of the room, angry, grabbing a cigarette box and a light on his way out.

Mum walks up to me, a scared look in her eyes, “I just want you to know that everything your father says and does is because he loves you.”

“It doesn’t feel that way.” I whisper, shrugging her hand off my shoulder. “I’m going back up into my room.”

“What about dinner? You need to eat!” She pleaded. She still wants to spend time with me, even when I'm this horrendous monster.

“I'm okay, mom. Eat dinner without me.”

I couldn't sleep. My thoughts were drowning me.

I groan as I sit up. Rubbing my face, I swing my legs over the edge and begin my walk down the stairs.

I make my way to my jacket and head straight for the door, loving the cold air blowing on my face.

I sigh, looking down, tears threatening to spill. My hands ball into fists.

“Hey,” an unknown voice speaks beside me. Russian.

I jump at the sound. Eyes darting.

“Hey, it's okay! I- I am not going to hurt!”

It's the neighbor. The vampire neighbor who's my age. And a supposed commie.

“What did you want?”

“Y-you are… not… human?”

I stare at him. I know he's right. I am not human. This is my third transformation. “I am not.”

He offers his hand, and I notice how pale it is compared to mine. “You are bleeding.” He says, and I notice the blood dripping down my hand.

“Oh,” I let him take my hand, and he slowly covers it.

“It should heal soon. Are you okay?”

“I'm fine,” I sigh. “Are you free tomorrow night?”

“My family is going out, but I am staying in. Why?”

“I need someone to just look after me before the full moon.”

“Of course! I would love to–! I mean, yes. I am free.”

“You seem… excited…” I trailed off.

“I am. Most of the boys here… hate me. I am sure you do too, but you would at least like me to spend time with you, if only for a few minutes, so I find this a new step.”

“You're a vampire.”

“No. I am what Americans fear worst.”

“Taxes?”

“Huh?! No- I-” He laughs “That was good. I am the unknown. Which in their eyes, mean I am communist.”

“Are you not?”

“I am Russian, from USSR, under a communist state. I am communist, but it is not me.”

“I think I understand…” I whispered, squinting my eyes because I really didn't understand.

“Come by tomorrow. Any time. I will wait for you.” He assures.

“What do they call you?” I mutter.

“Alexander. They call me Alexander.” He gushed proudly.

“Alright, Alexander the Great. I'll be there.”
