Chapter 1

Erebon’s POV

I didn’t wake up today thinking I was going to kill someone, but it’s now consumed my whole psyche.

My brother, Royal Alpha Orpheus, had a peculiar letter sent to his personal mailing box, asking for his help as a lawyer.

A werewolf nurse named Natascha wanted Orpheus to encourage and support her friend Sabrina through a divorce.

Sabrina didn’t want a divorce and kept saying everything was fine. She was an omega though, so she didn’t have any ability to fight back.

To prove Sabrina needed Royal Alpha intervention, Natascha provided haunting evidence.

After setting up secret cameras in her friend’s house, she cut down the evidence to the major encounters over a week. 10 minutes of footage and I was ready to kill Hannibal Bennett, a wolf who worked in the human community, outside pack foundations as a real estate agent.

But I never passed on this letter full of information to my brother.

I also avoided my pack mates, Qullion, Sascha, Zoran and Laoch; all degenerate Alphas who were living under Greywood protection. They could technically help me – but I find myself personally drawn into this situation. I don’t consult them while they play video games. Meanwhile, my brother is busy being a lawyer out back in his office.

So my afternoon is cleared.

Natascha said tonight was a good time to knock on their door after 7pm, as she was minding their two daughters for a couple of hours.

I called up Natascha and told her briefly what I expected her to do.

Then I hop into my red Ferrari and take off, video images replaying of the kitchen and living area. Sabrina was a typical omega, she had large brown eyes and long blonde hair, she was mousey for sure, always looking down in the videos. It was hard to see her features clearly.

In one clip, when ‘Hans’ came home, a tall red headed wolf wearing a tacky suit, Sabrina was simply walking out of the kitchen when he tipped his foot out and purposefully tripped his wife. She said nothing as she fell to the floor. He laughed and called her clumsy. His smile just in that video footage made me see red.

In another clip, he was watching a tv show and their daughters were audibly crying in another room over. Sabrina had been in the middle of holding up a used shirt in front of him from the laundry, questioning him quietly about a ‘funny smell’ and lipstick smears on the collar of his shirt. Hans called her delusional, then proceeded to scream at his wife to attend ‘her’ kids.

And finally the third clip… it was the longest and the most brutal.

The footage is dark. Hannibal comes home late, drunk on a Sunday night – the one just past actually. Exactly three days ago. He tosses his phone down on the kitchen bench, Sabrina was waiting by the fridge, hurriedly grabbing him a glass of water – when he went to the bathroom and his phone rings on the counter. Sabrina nervously answers it, not wanting it to ring out, whatever she hears is enough for her to drop the phone and it smacks against the floor. Hans comes out raging, Sabrina says another woman’s name, confused and hunched over. He got right in her face, dared her to say the name again. Even though the video seemed silent, he proceeded to bash her while calling her a delusional bitch. I watched the whole assault. Then the cherry on top, I saw two sets of eyes in the corner of the vision. Two little girls, 4 and 3 years old, wrapped in blankets, silently watching as their father laid their mother out. They were so scared they weren’t making any noise, they were mimicking their mother – who was also trying her best not to scream. Not to scare them. It ended with him threatening to kill her if she ever said the woman’s name ever again. The woman he was cheating on her with.

Natascha made it very clear, Sabrina didn’t want to press charges against her husband. Sabrina also incessantly blamed herself. For everything.

I knew why Natascha didn’t send this to the police – but to us.

I knew what she really wanted.

I’m glad I opened the mail first.

While weakness usually made me furious, Sabrina’s situation was credibly abusive and she had no room for escape, if that meant facing death from the man who should be protecting her.

If Orpheus got a hold of this, he might go over, help with divorce proceedings, use his intimidating air to keep Hannibal in line. Remove Sabrina to a safehouse with her daughters.

He was good at keeping his cool through things like that.

But I just couldn’t live another day seeing that pitiful excuse for a mate and werewolf, living in our Royal territory.

I was old enough to do something about it.

Hannibal was very tall – Sabrina was very small.

Heh.

He could pick on me if he liked.

Sabrina’s POV

Every Wednesday night, Natascha babysits my daughters, Alice and Noah, so my husband could have a break. He was very hypersensitive to everything.

I watch intently as he shakes the tomato sauce and squirts it over his chicken nuggets.

My stomach grumbles, they smell so good, so I reach for one piece but Hans shoots me a long warning glare, “Wait, I haven’t decided how much you’ll have yet, I’m still hungry,” Hans sighs as he eats a few and then takes more onto his plate, meanwhile, he pauses in his chewing to look me up and down across the bench, “When did you get so ugly?” Hannibal narrows his eyes, “You changed your makeup again? It looks like frosting on a cake. You think I want to kiss that tonight? Wash it off,” I open my mouth, but he usually hates it when I say much of anything. I annoy him with my pestering, “Just go do it now, you can eat after.”

I reach up a hand to my face, and I try to tell him, “I’ll be uglier without the makeup. Don’t you remember what happened a few nights ago?”

“…and who’s fault was that?” Hannibal shrugs, “It was a lesson, Sabrina, you silly woman. Don’t prod where you’re not welcome. And don’t look so sappy, my god, you’re depressing to be around.”

I don’t say anything, there’s nothing to say.

I just walk out of the kitchen into the hall of our basic three-bedroom house. We only rented so I wanted to keep everything tidy. I didn’t work, by choice, I wanted to be a stay at home mother. Years ago, when we got married, I always dreamed of owning a home – Hans knew this and promised the world to me, but now he wasn’t willing to put that much of his pay toward a loan repayment. Even when I found some loans almost equal to rent. It bothered me a lot, thinking of how I could provide for my daughters with an inheritance when we were no longer here. But Hans was right about the fact I didn’t work, so it was my fault. Most couples worked together. Being an omega wolf, I couldn’t physically separate from my little ones. They were my world. It would make me too anxious to leave them while they’re small. Maybe when they’re both at school. They were my number one concern.

I met Hans straight out of high school, and we had one year of bliss where he pampered me beyond belief and then proposed. He was always so kind, at least to begin with.

We rushed the marriage a little after I got pregnant.

My husband changed after I had kids, he never called them his or ours, and often joked they weren’t his daughters – he especially hated how much attention I gave them. Hans was always so upset, I used to think it was work stress. But… I noticed his anger was always directed at me. It was never with friends, or work mates, or family.

It was always me.

So, I was the problem, I must be.

I tried every single day to figure out which parts of me I could change to make him smile again.

Sometimes, on our Wednesday date nights, he would be kind to me. It’s difficult, though, after what happened Sunday night…

Perhaps because I found out about his infidelity.

I had proof when his female workmate rang up, asking for Hans, then telling me she slept with him. They were her words over the phone.

But Hans was also correct – it wasn’t my phone. I answered it. It was my fault I heard that information. I was wrong.

But I need to try harder. I need to fix the parts of me he isn’t happy with.

I clean my face off in the bathroom, wiping it all away with a towel. I try to be gentle because it hurts. It means I take a bit longer than he is used to.

Hans comes to check on me.

“You done, Sabrina?” Hannibal walks over and into the bathroom doorway, looking at my face, now visibly grey and blue all over, “…ah… put the makeup back on,” he grimaces, looking disgusted. My heart pounds.

“I told you,” I whisper my frustration, but when I see his eyes flame up, I quickly submit, “But I will, I’ll reapply it better –”

“I don’t care what you do, just fix that face,” Hans looks me over, growling, “Ugly bitch… you’re even getting a bit pudgy, can’t you diet like every other woman that cares about herself? I want to feel attracted to my wife, geez,” he turns around, still holding his plate of chicken nuggets, he pauses with a nugget halfway between his teeth. His eyes widen and he drops the plate – it bounces off his belly, smashing into the floor, I jerk around to the change in his demeanour, “Who are you…” Hans whispers as his nostrils flare, breathing in, “…Alpha?”

He uses a respectful tone. An intruder is in the house – an Alpha at that?

I tip toe to the bathroom door, but Hans holds up a protective hand, “Stay back, Sabrina,” Hans whispers again, actually sounding scared– like he cares for me, for the first time in years.

I peek out anyway, and I see a tall and young man, strangely holding my frying pan which is filled with freshly cooked bacon and hot oil. He’s got a gold chain around his neck, while he wears a Royal suit with a crest for Greywood. This is – E-Erebon.

He was rarely seen, but known to be bad news. He had a gang of Alphas that roamed the city. Not to mention, the Greywood Royal Alpha brothers, were rumoured to have murdered their entire family, although it had been disproven in a Pisces Court recently.

The blood drains from my face.

Is he here to collect some kind of payment?

“Who are you calling ugly?” Erebon asks Hans, before looking at me and back to my husband, “You want this?”

“The b-bacon?” Hans stutters, “How d-did you get in here, Alpha Erebon?”

“Shut up, cunt. I’m not talking to you,” Erebon dismisses Hans as he looks at me, “You want that?” he looks back at Hans.

He’s talking about my husband?

I can’t lie or fib to an Alpha, so with shame, in front of my husband, I shake my head.

Hans looks heart broken, but that sadness turns to rage.

“Did you just answer no?” Hans asks, louder when he faces me, “You don’t want me?

“Shut the door, Sabrina,” Erebon speaks politely and smiles kindly.

I can’t disobey an Alpha’s command either – especially a Royal Alpha.

I instinctively reach for the door, while staring wide eyed at my husband as I slowly shut it, “Don’t hurt him, please,” I whisper, begging Erebon before I shut the door, “Please.”

“I won’t hurt him,” Erebon promises, “I’m going to kill him. Shut the door, omega.”

His command comes out.

I shut the door on the tail end of that horrific promise, just as I see Hans try to attack first, flying into a frenzy.

In shock, I hear a loud twang – frying pan to head?

Hans collapses, slamming into the wall, then the floor.

There’s no more sound.

I get down on my knees, and I can hear his laboured breathing.

And then I see shadows morph and change – as Erebon shifts to his giant wolf.

I can smell the intense and overwhelming pheromones from the Royal Alpha.

I start to whimper along with my wolf inside, wanting to roll over and beg to be spared.

He must have heard my whimper through the door, as I hear Erebon’s snarl, an obvious noise to back up further.

I crawl backwards.

Violence erupts.

Hans starts screaming, and blood starts leaking under the door, trickling toward me.

I’m also screaming as my mate is brutalised.

It’s the loudest sound I’ve ever let out in my life.

“Stop, stop, stop!” I scream over the top of Hans screaming for mercy, as I back up into the shower curtain and the side of the bathtub.

Eventually the sounds of violence cease, and I hear a dragging sound.

Shaking violently, I freeze with my hands scrunched into my hair as the bathroom door carefully opens.

The only one standing is Erebon.

He’s muscular and hard body is naked after shifting, he is still covered in blood. I hide my eyes with my elbow as Erebon saunters in. I cower away as he jumps into the shower and he turns on the water, rinsing off.

He’s still growling, trying to calm the Alpha inside.

I now stand up, since he said nothing to command me, I walk out into the corridor and I see the edge of a hand coming out from the bedroom. He dragged Hans in there.

There’s oil, bacon and blood all over the carpet in the hall.

“Hans,” I breathe my mate’s name, stumbling closer, in smaller and smaller shuffles.

Do I really want to look?

I hesitate at the side of the wall, gripping the edge of the doorframe, while standing over gore-soaked carpet.

“Don’t look.”

Erebon has strided back out of the bathroom. I freeze up.

He moves into the corridor. I can hear him, getting changed back into his suit.

I don’t turn around until I know he’s put on a belt – I hear it cinch shut and I turn to him.

“Natascha took your daughters to the Greywood,” Erebon tells me, “You’re under my protection now,” he holds out a hand.

“You murdered him, my mate,” I say, “But you murdered him,” I say it again, speaking louder.

“I can murder whoever I like,” Erebon puts on his gold chain last of all, not snarling at me, just speaking normal, “That was completely legal,” I open my mouth but no sound comes out, “Come with me,” Erebon waits for me to take his hand, then drops his hand, realising I am not going to take it.

He cocks a brow, turns and stalks out of the house, spritely and full of energy – he’s very fit.

But he is an Alpha.

I turn around one more time to the bedroom.

He said not to.

But… my compulsion to see… my mate… it’s just one look.

I lean forward, I peek around – and I see a red, mauled mess, guts spilling out of his belly.

Hans eyes move as he looks up at me.

Dying like that.

I keep staring, stunned.

“Help… me,” Hans gurgles on his own blood, “Sabrina.”

A strange and sick thought, fills my head… knowing he can’t throw his fist through my face.

“…maybe… some makeup will help…?” I ask him.

I don’t know where it comes from.

I stare too long at him dying, the gore scarring me.

But the adrenaline of the moment has me too shocked to react appropriately now. I should be by his side, holding his hand, but I can’t get any closer to Hans… I don’t want to.

I feel heat at my back, as Erebon returns, looking over my head, into the room.

“Are you going to puke?” Erebon asks me, curious. I note he clearly doesn’t care about violence. That means he is a violent wolf. I have to be careful around him.

“No,” I try to sound strong.

“Come on, omega,” Erebon takes my arm this time, dragging me around, he pulls me from the house. We make it as far as the lawn – by then I’m falling to my knees and throwing up everything.

Erebon waits by me, squatting down at my side, still holding my arm, “You feel better?” I’m surprised he cares to ask. I nod, unable to look him in the eye as I wipe my mouth clean. “Good. Let’s go.”

I stand back up. I can’t pull away or protest from his tight hold. He was a gangster. He even wore a gold chain to match the look. He’s also from the Greywood family.

Even if I had the capacity, I can’t resist him. That would be stupid.

I follow the Alpha and I do what he says..
