The arrival

Lucy Bennett stared through the dense fog at the looming silhouette of the old mansion, her heart a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. The house, an inheritance from an estranged great-aunt she barely knew, stood on the outskirts of the remote village of Fogwood. As she stepped out of her car, the fog seemed to swallow up the world around her, muffling the sounds and creating an eerie silence.

The villagers were polite but distant when she arrived, their eyes filled with a mixture of pity and caution. Whispers followed her everywhere, but she could not understand their words. The mansion itself was a vast, Gothic structure, its dark windows like vacant eyes watching her every move.
