Chapter 1: The Discovery

Professor Melvin, a weak but brilliant scientist with Tetralogy of Fallot, made an incredible discovery that would start a revolution in a world where a despotic dictatorship is continually rewriting history.

Melvin had grown up at a once-bustling university, but it had long since closed, and its opulent halls now stood in eerie solitude. The walls were falling apart, their grandeur worn away by time and neglect, formerly emblazoned with the proud accomplishments of innumerable students. It was not nostalgia that had brought Melvin back to these ruins; rather, it was necessity. Melvin thought the secrets the regime had been trying to hide—secrets that could alter the path of history—were concealed beneath the debris.

Melvin’s mind was racing with ideas and recollections as he made his way through the dilapidated hallways. His health had been a constant source of worry, a ticking time bomb that made him aware of his own death. Due to a congenital heart abnormality, he had difficulty breathing and walking every step of his life. However, what motivated him to move forward was not his own life but rather the future of his children, Johann, Julia, and Nathaniel.

His oldest child, Nathalie, had inherited his critical thinking and voracious curiosity. The middle child, Julia, was a shining example of imagination and fortitude. Of the three, Johann was the youngest and most active, a bundle of untapped potential. When combined, they were his source of inspiration and the reason he persisted in overcoming his discomfort and exhaustion.

Alice, the mother of Julia and Nathalie as well as Melvin’s first love, had been the center of their family’s affections. Melvin attempted to fill the vacuum left by her sad death throughout the regime’s initial climb to power. Years later, Heidy’s courage and kindness had given him another opportunity at love, and he found comfort in her.

Their union gave birth to Johann, a living example of their aspirations and goals in common. However, Heidy had also succumbed to the brutal hold of the government, making Melvin a single dad once more.

Melvin entered the run-down library of the university, and his mind went back to Alice and Heidy. This was the focal point of his investigation—the location where he thought he would eventually uncover the secret to overthrowing the regime. Even though it was in ruins, the library had gravitas—as if the knowledge housed within its walls defied the deterioration all around it.

Breathing heavily, the professor went slowly, looking among the shelves and piles for any hint that would point him in the direction of the artifact he was looking for. His fingers grazed the covers of old books, their titles masked by filth and dust. Then, as if guided by some force beyond his comprehension, his gaze landed on an especially ordinary book with a worn and faded cover.

Melvin took the book down from the shelf, surprised by how heavy it felt in his hands. As he turned the pages, the yellowed pages made a gentle crackling sound. He discovered notes and diagrams hidden throughout the text that didn’t seem to belong there—as if someone had placed them there specifically so the proper person would find them. The schematics showed a complexly designed time-traveling machine that defied accepted theories of reality and physics.

Melvin’s heartbeat accelerated as he studied the diagrams. This was it—the relic he had been looking for, the secret to opening the past and changing the course of events. A wave of energy surged through him at that knowledge, briefly overpowering his bodily limitations. He was aware that the dictatorship would do anything it took to obtain control over such a tool and rewrite history to suit their needs. But in his hands, it might turn into a liberating tool, a way to reverse the worst crimes committed by the state.

Melvin poured hours into studying the schematics and figuring out the notes that went with them. By the time he was satisfied that he had grasped the fundamentals of the artifact’s operation, the sun had already started to set. In order to protect the valuable information he had discovered, he meticulously copied the most important details into his own notepad.

The slight sound of footfall echoed through the large, empty space of the library, interrupting him as he worked. Melvin felt his heart racing, but it was from terror rather than physical exertion. He was aware that the enforcers of the dictatorship, infamous for their harsh tactics and unrelenting hunt for dissidents, could not be far behind. He quickly tucked the book and his notes away and dove farther into the dark corners of the library.

The sound of footsteps became clearer and louder. Melvin’s mind was constantly brainstorming ways to get away. There was too much at risk for him to afford to be taken prisoner. He made a big effort to calm his body and stabilize his respiration. At the library’s entrance, the enforcers materialized in their ominous, intimidating uniforms, their gaze searching the space for indications of intruder activity.

Melvin, with his heart thumping in his chest, observed from his concealed location. The enforcers proceeded with deliberate, precise movements. They were trying to find someone or anything. Melvin’s resolve was strengthened by the thought of his children and his desire to keep them safe. Now that he was this close to a breakthrough, he would not let himself be discovered.

The enforcers were getting closer to Melvin’s location, and his thoughts were racing. He noticed a little opening behind a row of bookcases that led to a secret alcove. Gathering the last of his power, he crept into the corridor, hoping no one would spot him. Although the alcove was small and the air was stuffy and heavy, it offered momentary protection.

Melvin could hear the enforcers whispering to each other from where he was hiding. Their search produced no immediate results, and they were frustrated. They continued after what seemed like a lifetime, their footsteps disappearing into the distance. Melvin waited, the excitement pounding in his veins and his body quivering from the exertion.

Melvin came out of concealment once he was positive that the enforcers had left. He was aware that he needed to quit the institution right now. He could not afford to lose the discovery he had made, and the dictatorship would surely step up its search. He picked up his notes and headed back through the maze-like hallways with a newfound sense of urgency, his mind fixed on the work at hand.

Outside, the world was shrouded in twilight as the sun had set. Thoughts racing, Melvin hurried through the empty streets. To make sure his kids were secure, he needed to get through to them. They served as both his compass and his motivation for resisting the oppressive regime. A wave of relief swept over him as he got closer to his modest home, tucked away in a peaceful area of the city.

He was met at the door by Julia, Johann, and Nathalie, whose expressions were a mixture of relief and concern. Melvin gave them a hug, and they found strength in their company. He was aware that the road ahead would be dangerous and that everything they possessed would be needed in the struggle for independence. Nevertheless, he was also aware that they could conquer any challenge as a team.

Melvin told his kids about his discoveries as the night grew longer. Johann listened intently, Julia’s face glowed with resolve, and Nathalie’s eyes glistened with delight. They came to understand that the artifact offered them an opportunity to recover their future and a ray of hope, not merely a way to alter the past.

The family put in a great deal of effort in the days that followed to comprehend the mechanisms of the artifact and get ready for the upcoming struggles. Even though Melvin’s health was becoming worse, his spirit never wavered. He had discovered a cause that went beyond his personal hardships and a purpose bigger than himself.

Thus, in the quiet corners of their house, the seeds of revolution were sown. With their strong relationship and knowledge of the artifact, Professor Melvin and his kids were ready to confront the regime’s power over them on time. Though their trip was just getting started, the artifact’s discovery had kindled a rebellious flame that would guide them further.
