Summary

Introducing Aurora, a reserved, overachieving dreamer who has consistently set lofty standards for romance. (Thanks Rom-Coms)! Introducing Grayson, an anxious introvert with a passion for classic films and literature. Grayson is a shy introvert who finds solace in classic films and novels. Summers on Martha’s Vineyard have always been a highlight for me, a time to relax, soak up the sun, and most importantly, spend time with Nathan, my boyfriend of 5 years. Ever since my childhood visits to Martha’s Vineyard with my best friends, Wren and Blair, Nathan and I have always had a special connection. However, three summers ago, everything changed when I met a mysterious boy at the summer's biggest party. We spent the entire day together, and it left me questioning everything. Now, as I start my first year at NYU, I can't help but feel like this year will be different.

Chapter 1 - Aurora

“Come on, it's gonna be the party of the summer, you can't just bail on us like this! So what if you and Nathan had a little spat? It doesn't mean you have to lock yourself in your room all day, Rory." Wren and Blair, my two best friends, sat across from me, desperately trying to persuade me to attend this awesome Fourth of July bash. I nibbled on my lip, contemplating whether or not I should go. Nathan and I have been together for three years now, and sure, we've had our fair share of arguments, but this one felt different. It was the first time our fight had dragged on for more than just a couple of days. The reason behind it all? I caught him snooping through my phone while I was busy making lunch in the other room. When I confronted him about it, he exploded, accusing me of "sleeping around" and calling me a "whore" just for hanging out with the guys on Martha's Vineyard. I snatched my phone back from his grasp and stormed out of the living room, tears streaming down my face. As I made my way towards the beach, my pace quickened. How could he even suggest that I would cheat on him? Eventually, I stopped running, taking a moment to catch my breath and survey the nearly empty shoreline. It was exactly as I expected. Of course, Nate's parents owned the most envy-inducing house on the Vineyard, ensuring that this particular stretch of beach remained untouched, except for the occasional visit from neighbors who owned properties in exotic locations like the Caribbean, Bahamas, and even a "winter" home in California. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden glow over the sand and the crashing waves. I kicked off my sandals and let the cool ocean breeze wash over me, momentarily distracting me from the turmoil in my mind. The salty air filled my lungs, and I closed my eyes, trying to find solace in the familiar sounds of seagulls and the distant laughter of children playing. But as the gentle waves lapped at my feet, memories of our relationship flooded my thoughts. Nathan and I had always been inseparable, our love story the envy of our friends. We had shared countless adventures, from road trips to spontaneous weekend getaways. Our connection had always been strong, but lately, cracks had started to form. I couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed between us. The trust that had once been the foundation of our relationship now felt fragile, shattered by his unfounded accusations. Nathan attends a prestigious school in New York, which only highlights the stark difference between his education and mine at a regular school in Massachusetts. He always doubts my sincerity when I assure him that he is the only one I have eyes for, yet he counters with a snide remark, insinuating that he is unsure of my actions when I am away from the island. I had never given him a reason to doubt me, and yet, here we were, on the brink of a breakup. Lost in my thoughts, I absentmindedly picked up a seashell, turning it over in my hands. Its smooth surface reminded me of the simplicity and beauty of the ocean, a stark contrast to the complexity of human relationships. I wondered if there was a way to salvage what we had, to mend the broken pieces of our love.

Returning to reality, I find myself gazing at the two girls in front of me, my best friends. Forever. They possess a unique talent: making any guy feel envious. A grin slowly spreads across my face as Wren suddenly jumps onto my lap, exclaiming, "You're going to have an amazing time! Just try not to think about Nathaniel." I couldn't help but burst into laughter as Blair playfully joins in, creating a delightful chaos. It's unusual for Blair to act so silly, but I suppose she's just trying to uplift my spirits once again. I like to believe that Nate's outburst towards me was a result of his frustration from not finding anything, which must have wounded his pride. I've refrained from sharing with the girls what he said to me; I'm certain they would transform into spitfires and might even end up spending a night in jail.

I proposed to Wren, "How about we go see a movie tonight?" Blair usually joins us, but she disappeared last night with the mysterious man she's been talking about for what feels like forever. Wren smiles gently and agrees. "There's also a rerun of 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days' on TV," she suggests, knowing it's another good option. Wren knows me too well, and I can't help but smile as she playfully raises her eyebrows.  "Let's order some Indian food," I announce, taking off my shoes and hurrying back to my room to change into something more comfortable—a tank top and shorts would be perfect. Sitting at my vanity, I start braiding my hair, my mind wandering to everything and everyone—Nate, Wren, Blair, Mom. Thinking about Mom brings a smile to my face. It occurs to me that I need to call her; it's been almost two months since I've been home, since the start of summer. Mom, Dad, and Liam are on their usual trip to Florida. Finishing my braid, I catch a glimpse of the dark circles under my eyes in the mirror. Nate's words didn't seem to affect me much—at least, that's what I thought. Reflecting on the past four nights, I realize I've been relying on melatonin for sleep. Wren's voice interrupts my thoughts, and I hurry downstairs to the living room, where her warm brown eyes meet mine. Immediately sensing that something is wrong, I glance towards the door and see Nate standing near the entrance. Turning back to Wren, I see her empathetic gaze.  𓇢𓆸

Taking a deep breath, I approach Nate with a sense of urgency. My heart races as I contemplate the multitude of reasons for his presence at Blair's family summer house. As I draw nearer, he greets me with a smile, unaware of my true intentions to distance myself from him. Although I can't quite pinpoint the cause of my unease, I feel compelled to break the silence that hangs between us. Opening my mouth to speak, I am uncertain of what words will escape, but I know that anything is better than maintaining this silence. Nate leans in and kisses me, causing me to shift uncomfortably before succumbing to his embrace. He pulls away, a smug smile adorning his face, while I grimace and meet his lustful gaze. "I've been reflecting on our argument, and I realize that I acted terribly by invading your privacy and going through your phone. I'm truly sorry, baby," Nate says, attempting to show empathy. I detest the term 'baby' as it makes me feel objectified. Despite my discomfort, I muster a forced smile and nod in response. "It's alright! I had assumed as much, and you wouldn't have said that if you weren't under the influence." Nate begins to lean down, and I catch a whiff of tequila on his breath. He stretches his arms out to caress my cheeks, then moves his head to my neck, inhaling deeply before planting kisses down to my collarbone. "Nate, are you drunk?" I gasp as he leaves a soft bite mark on my neck. He shakes his head and starts to kneel, his hands trailing down my body to my backside. With a lust-filled smile, he squeezes tightly. I inhale sharply, realizing that Nate is indeed intoxicated. He only behaves like this when he's under the influence. Shaking my head, I meet his gaze as he looks up at me. "Wren is in the other room, Nate. We can't," I whisper urgently. I begin to back away, but he wraps his hands around my thighs, pulling me closer. Desperately, I grab onto his arms and push him away. "Nate, absolutely not. You're drunk. Get up," I assert. He growls in frustration and stands up, storming towards the door and slamming it shut behind him. I watch him leave, feeling a mix of relief and disappointment. I know that Nate's behavior is not acceptable, and I refuse to let him take advantage of me in his intoxicated state. As I take a deep breath to calm my racing heart, I realize that I need to have a serious conversation with him about boundaries and respect. I can't continue to ignore his behavior and pretend that everything is okay. With a newfound determination, I make a mental note to address the situation with Nate as soon as possible, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. It's time to stand up for myself and make it clear that his actions are not acceptable. I return to the living room, struggling to hold back tears as I attempt to regain my composure. I smile at Wren, who then stands up and walks over to me, giving me a hug. In that moment, a sense of safety washes over me, shielding me from Nate and all other worries. Wren guides us to the couch, where I sit down while she serves us Indian food from a local spot called “Saffron by the shore”. We decided to share the Butter Chicken, which is generously portioned. As the evening progresses, I drift off to sleep watching my favorite movie. It dawned on me that tonight, I didn't need any melatonin to help me fall asleep.
