On with the story:

Abby was in her office at the Two Rivers Hospice going through her files. Her assistant came in and they began putting them away. They talked about everything
Beep
Beep
She went to her phone and picked it up and saw a text message fro her brothers. She told her assistant to close up and got her things and ran out the door. She ran through the people on the sidewalk. She saw a guy on the phone talking and about to step foot into the street when she saw a car driving towards him. She ran and grabbed the guy and pulled him back on the sidewalk. He paused his conversation and saw the car go by. He turned and looked at her.
“Be careful next time and watch your surroundings,” Abby said. She took off before he could thank her. She ran down to the parking garage and got into her car and drove off to the suburbs. She pulled up to the house where she grew up after her parents died and ran in.
“Sis!” her brothers said.
“What’s going on?” Abby asked.
“Nothing is going on, these two are overreacting as usual, I’m fine,” her grandmother said.
“No you aren’t Grandma,” Adam said.
“You shouldn’t be doing this,” Aaron said.
“I feel so good that I want to travel,” Caroline said.
“This was the big emergency, you called me because Grandma wants to take a trip?” Abby asked.
“By herself,” Adam said.
“Alone at 80 years old,” Adam said.
“I told you I wouldn’t be alone, I’m going with my book club, we saved up for this trip,” Caroline said.
“Where are you guys going?” Abby asked.
“To the places tied to Little House books, Laura Ingalls birthplace in Wisconsin, Independence Kansas, Walnut Grove Minnesota, Burr Oak Iowa, De Smet South Dakota, and Mansfield Missouri,” Caroline said.
“Grandma,” Adam said.
“We are just worried about you, all of you,” Aaron said.
“I’m sure they will be fine guys,” Abby said.
“Abby,” Adam said.
“Guys, raising us kept her young,” Abby said.
“I got checked out by my doctor and she said I’m as healthy as a horse, all the women are, some of them are bringing their husbands because their hubbys are big book lovers as well,” Caroline said.
“And the youngest person going?” Abby asked.
“Tanya Ronan, she’s 34, she started the book club for her mom, her dad has Alzheimer’s and is in the nursing home,” Caroline said.
“That’s sad, but see guys, someone responsible going with them,” Abby said.
“We just love you Grandma, you are all we have,” Adam said.
“We couldn’t handle losing you,” Aaron said.
“I’ll be fine boys, I’ll call every day,” Caroline said.
“You better, Grandma, we love you,” Abby said.
“I love you three,” Caroline said. They all hugged her. Abby, Adam, and Aaron helped her pack and get ready for her trip. Aaron took her to where she was meeting everyone. Adam hugged Abby.
“What’s up sis?” Adam asked.
“I left my office and saved a guy from getting hit by a car and took off before he said anything,” Abby said.
“You were in the right place at the right time,” Adam said.
“Yeah I guess so, maybe I ran before he could insult me for something,” Abby said.
“For what, saving his life,” Adam said.
“He was on the phone and not paying attention, I thought maybe he would yell at me for touching him or something,” Abby said.
“Sis, not all guys are like Seth,” Adam said. Seth was Abby’s ex-boyfriend who was abusive towards her. He was sent to prison after Adam walked in on him beating Abby and arrested him.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you guys sooner,” Abby said.
“Sis I’m glad I came over that day, who knows what would have happened,” Adam said.
“He would have beaten me to death,” Abby said.
“He won’t be hurting you anymore,” Adam said.
“I thought they would let him off because it was you who arrested him,” Abby said.
“I had Jake do it since he was with me,” Adam said.
“How’s Jake and Sarah?” Abby asked.
“Getting ready to be parents,” Adam said.
“Let’s lock up and head home bro,” Abby said.
“Yep,” Adam said. They locked up the house and headed to their cars. He hugged her and she headed home to her apartment. She walked up and walked in and closed the door. She locked up and got something to eat and watched a movie before heading to shower and to bed.
Three days later...
She was at her office. She got a call from one of the nursing homes in the city. She got the fax from them and looked through the files and saw the name.
“Ronan,” Abby said. She got everything she needed and went to the nursing home and met with the director of the nursing home who she knew very well, Laura Baker.
“Thanks for coming Abby, someone from the family was suppose to be here but the only one in town is the son and he’s busy with meetings all day, we wanted to get this going so Mr. Ronan’s wife and daughter trust me to get this going and they heard amazing things about your hospice care,” Laura said.
“We just want to make things as easy as possible for the families,” Abby said.
“They wish it didn’t come to this but he’s just not going in the direction he should be, it’s like he’s giving up on life,” Laura said.
“I see that there have been doctors here and specialists as well,” Abby said.
“Yes and they are all in agreement with their prognosis,” Laura said.
“The end is near,” Abby said.
“I’m afraid so,” Laura said.
“Well all there is left is to keep him comfortable,” Abby said.
“His wife and daughter are out of town,” Laura said.
“The daughter’s name is Tanya right?” Abby asked.
“Yes and his wife’s name is Dana,” Laura said.
“I think I heard the name before, wait a minute, my grandma is part of a book club that Tanya started for her mother and they just left for their trip yesterday,” Abby said.
“How is your grandma?” Laura asked.
“Still feisty and going strong and wanted to travel and my brothers threw a fit,” Abby said.
“Wouldn’t doubt it with those two,” Laura said.
“You have been a great friend to our family,” Abby said.
“Growing up with your mom was something I never would change, if I could go back, I would have told them not to fly that day,” Laura said.
“No one could have known that the pilot had been drinking, he hid it well,” Abby said.
“I know you and your brothers miss them,” Laura said.
“Yeah we do but we were lucky to have our grandparents,” Abby said.
“Who kept you all together,” Laura said. She and Abby went over things before they went to the room where the patient was. Abby checked things over and made sure he was comfortable.
