What is your opinion?

GEA26 - Based on the first 10 chapters

"The Rebellious Mate is such a refreshing take on the shape shifter lore. It’s not just werewolves here. There are a whole host of animals that live in this world and walk among us. I enjoyed this story from start to “finish” and am looking forward to reading it again once it has a conclusion. If you enjoy these types of fantasy novels, this is one you’re going to want to sink your teeth into. "

A Gradual Journey into the World of Shapeshifters

"This review is part of a “Review Swap.” Lauren and I agreed on this months ago, but life got hectic for both of us, so the review took a bit (okay, quite a bit) longer than expected. But now, finally, here it is! The Rebellious Mate tells the story of Asena, who embarks on a challenging journey to find her friend Vic, who has mysteriously vanished without a trace. The protagonist is a shapeshifter known as a “kitten,” while all other characters can also change forms — but into different animals. I read up to chapter 15, which I think is the perfect stopping point since that’s where the first major plotline for Asena really kicks off. Starting with the story itself: I haven’t read anything quite like this before, especially since I’m generally not familiar with shapeshifter novels. At first, I found it a bit difficult to get used to the plot because it’s outside my usual interests. But over the last few months, I’ve grown fond of the book. I think Asena’s character is written very subtly — not overwhelming with too much information at once, nor holding back too much over many chapters. You get to know her gradually, which adds a nice sense of realism. As for the style: I struggled a bit at the beginning. Sometimes I’d reread chapters several times just to fully understand the plotlines, or I’d stop reading halfway through. This isn’t a reflection on Lauren as an author — far from it! The book is in English, which is not my native language; it’s actually the third language I speak. So naturally, the beginning was a bit challenging for me. I’d recommend adding brief explanations or glossaries for certain terms, perhaps at the end of chapters, so all readers can follow along easily. I had to look up some terms to understand the chapters fully, and I left comments where I found this necessary. Even for information that might be considered “common knowledge,” I think it’s helpful to include a quick explanation either at the end of the chapter or within the paragraph. For example, geography in Europe (since I’m from Europe) is taught throughout school here, but that’s not the case everywhere. So, just to be safe, a bit more clarity on certain terms would benefit all readers. Overall, I really like the pacing. The characters are well-developed, and some parts are so well described that I had to reread passages because I was genuinely impressed. Of course, like any book, there are a few minor critiques. But I’m no expert and don’t notice every flaw. I’d suggest having a professional reader take a look as well. Otherwise, hats off to you, Lauren! The book has been really well done so far. When life calms down and I find time besides my own writing, I’ll definitely continue reading!"

A truly unique universe

"I had no idea what I was getting myself into, never having read a shifter story. I was afraid it was going to be hard to understand without any background, but this world stands entirely on its own. Lauren crafts her own universe beautifully, gradually building up information and including entertaining explanatory gallery chapters. This story is first and foremost a mystery, which is expertly executed. I received just enough bits of information to keep me hooked. The lead character, Asena, has a very relatable journey for me, having to step outside of her comfort zone and gain courage to find her friend. The other POV characters (and side characters) are well developed in their motives and their interactions with Asena make for some amazing/fun/crazy scenes! This story is so well-written and captivating, I can't wait to read more. I would give more than five stars if I could ;)"

Review of The Rebellious Mate by Lauren S. Cowan

" Lauren S. Cowan has crafted a truly captivating and immersive tale in The Rebellious Mate, blending elements of fantasy, romance, and deep emotional conflict into a story that grips the reader from the very first page. The narrative is set in a richly imagined world where dragons, shifters, and humans coexist, and the author’s ability to weave together complex relationships and cultural dynamics is nothing short of remarkable. One of the standout aspects of this story is the depth of the characters. Drach, the proud and determined dragon, and Asena, the fiercely independent and resilient human, are both written with incredible nuance. Their interactions are electric, filled with tension, vulnerability, and moments of raw honesty that make their connection feel authentic and deeply emotional. Asena, in particular, shines as a character who refuses to conform to expectations, embodying strength and independence in a way that is both inspiring and relatable. The dialogue is another highlight of Cowan's writing. It is sharp, witty, and often laced with humour, particularly in the exchanges between Drach and his brother Calek. These moments of levity provide a perfect counterbalance to the more intense and dramatic scenes, showcasing the author’s skill in maintaining a dynamic and engaging tone throughout the story. The world-building in The Rebellious Mate is exceptional. Cowan has created a vivid and intricate setting that feels alive and brimming with history and culture. From the traditions of the dragons to the struggles of the human characters, every detail is carefully considered, adding layers of depth to the narrative. The exploration of themes such as loyalty, love, and the clash between personal desires and societal expectations adds a thought-provoking dimension to the story. While the story is undeniably compelling, there is one minor aspect that could be refined further. At times, Drach’s actions, particularly his more impulsive decisions, may come across as overly intense. However, this is a testament to Cowan’s ability to write flawed and realistic characters who are driven by their emotions, making them all the more relatable and human. This intensity only serves to heighten the stakes of the story and deepen the reader’s investment in the characters’ journey. Overall, The Rebellious Mate is a beautifully written and emotionally charged tale that will resonate with fans of fantasy romance. Lauren S. Cowan’s talent for storytelling shines through in every chapter, making this a must-read for anyone who enjoys complex characters, rich world-building, and a love story that defies the odds. This is a book that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page, and I, for one, am eagerly anticipating what Cowan has in store for us next."

"I love how long your chapters are, it definitely adds depth to the story. I also enjoy the names you have made up, great creativity. I have never read a therianthrope novel before, I will admit that I did think that therians were weird but you have definitely done a great job at proving me otherwise. Your writing style is super impressive. The grammar is on point, which I absolutely admire. Keep up the great work! Has tons of potential. "

Amazing!

"So, this isn’t the type of book I would normally read, so I was quite hesitant at first. But, I was pleasantly surprised by everything! The writer has amazing descriptive skills for not just the character, but the environment, the places - it makes you feel like you are physically there, experiencing what the characters are experiencing! Absolutely mind blown. I cannot wait to read more of your stories 🖤 Please, keep on writing, your style is beautiful!"

Rich and Immersive

"Read on Wattpad, Reviewed on Inkitt. This was my first ‘heavy’ shifter book and I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Despite the rich world, I was never confused as the author gradually explores it and drops pieces of information here and there that make me feel as if I’m in the story itself without being overwhelmed. While the writing is beautiful and masterful, the best part of this book are the beautifully crafted characters. Asena, our protagonist is strong and independent and wilful. I absolutely adore her and her story. Everything happens as she’s trying to find her sister/best friend Vic. She’s following in her footsteps to find her and in the process catches the attention of a dragon prince. As of the time of this review, Asena has not given her dragon a chance 🥺 but it’s for several good reasons. (Although I hope she still does)! This book is rich with humor, history and geography. I love the pacing. It allowed me to really get to know the characters but it also keeps me on my toes and makes me interested to change POVs and see what one character thinks about another. So far, my favs are Asena, Drach, Duma and of course Moggie who always makes me laugh out load. I’m looking forward for the next chapters so that I can binge and maybe I’ll get to know more about Calek, Drach’s icy brother who I’m still on the fence about… Anyway, all this is to say that this is one of the best books on Inkitt and I highly recommend it 🩷"

Amazing story!!

"The writing is really impressive, a nice mix of quick action and slower scenes that develop the mood/setting or characters, from the first chapter the motivations are clear and the main character is established really well. The grammar is perfect, and the setting is very unique and a nice twist on the trope. Sometimes it felt a little fast paced, after finishing chapters. (Got to chapter 10) I felt I’d missed lots of information or didn’t have enough time to really process it all, but i wouldn’t doubt that being my fault. Really good read!! Well done!! : ) "

The Things I love About this Story

"I recommend you read this story. It has a strong core quest and characters that draw you in. There are a few things the author does particularly well: - The hunt for her best friend, is a beautiful motivation, and it keeps the suspense going through the story. It adds an air of intrigue and mystery that makes you need to know what happens to her. - The adept way the themes of trafficking are handled within the supernatural world created. As well as the characterisation of the individuals involved that is both empathetic and dramatic. - The world itself, including the underlying juxtaposition between old and new mentalities that give depth to the story and create, complicated relationship dynamics between what feels like a phenomenal main pairing. - The chemistry between the main pairing is literally on fire! I cannot wait to see how that develops. - The way shifters work and of course Moggie! Moggie is everything. If you don’t know, read and find out. This story is great for twists, and tension, the sort that makes you want to keep reading. I have so many questions and I can’t wait to see how the author answers them. "

A Captivating Journey Into a Richly Crafted Shifter World

"“The Rebellious Mate” is a captivating blend of fantasy, action, and humor that plunges readers into a richly crafted world of shifters. The author skillfully introduces a complex universe where multiple types of shifters, not limited to the typical werewolves, coexist, making for a refreshing and engaging read. At first, the story can feel like an information overload with its heavy world-building and unique terminology, but once you navigate through the initial chapters, you’ll find yourself thoroughly invested in the journey of the protagonist, Asena, and her companion, Moggie. Their dynamic is both hilarious and relatable, bringing a delightful sense of lightness to the intricate storyline. The character development is impressive. Asena possesses a strong will and determination, making her a compelling lead, while Moggie’s wit and personality consistently provide comic relief that keeps the narrative lively. The rich detail in the author’s writing shines through in every interaction and setting, showcasing the thought and research poured into constructing this imaginative world. One of the standout elements of the story is its balance of fast-paced action with character-driven moments. The dialogue is engaging, and the relationships between characters are layered, adding depth to the unfolding plot. The author’s ability to blend technological elements with romance and fantasy creates a unique and thought-provoking atmosphere. Though the initial chapters may require a bit of patience due to their pacing, the payoff is considerable. The story quickly becomes immersive and provides plenty of twists and turns that will keep you eager to turn the page. If you enjoy richly built worlds, charismatic characters, and a touch of humor in your fantasy, “The Rebellious Mate” is definitely worth diving into. I wholeheartedly recommend it as a must-read for fans of the genre!"

Good story so far

"The first few chapters present a lot of information, which can feel a bit overwhelming. While I understand the need for world-building, it would be easier to follow if the details were introduced more gradually as the story progressed. This would make it a smoother read, without needing to flip back to keep track of characters. That said, the story itself is well-written and refreshingly different from the usual shifter novels, which I really appreciated. I absolutely love the protagonist and Moggie! The humor is spot-on and had me laughing more than a few times. The attention to detail throughout the story shows just how much thought and research went into crafting the plot. I also found the summaries of the new kingdoms particularly helpful, as they not only provide clarity but also leave room for imagination. Overall, I'm intrigued by where this story will go, and I'll definitely keep reading! "

I love this!

"There is an impressive amount of action that begins so quickly in this book that it’s difficult to not automatically go to the next chapter. The dialogue is strong and you can tell how much work the author has put into the personalities, backgrounds and stories for each of her characters. The world building is also very imaginative and put together, and unlike a lot of stories i’ve read with a similar trope, the author does a great job with making sure that everything seams together smoothly and leaves no grey area. The author also has a beautiful way of creating a unique language amongst the characters which gives the book a great since of depth and intrigue. I highly suggest this book, if not for the plot twists, for the beautiful writing style in itself. Great job, author! "

Fantastic piece

"I really loved this book and the depth of incorporating a secret world of shifters into our own. I don't think the author missed a single thing. There's so much we're told, it's almost overwhelming at first to keep up and follow the flow to get a sense of what's happening and who's in charge both in the homo sapien and shifter worlds. However, I applaud the level of detail necessary to bring this all together. There were some minor misspellings here and there, but they didn't bother me much because the sheer professional level of writing here is insane. My two favorite parts are the MCs' first encounter, with the snarky back and forth and the hot (literally!) surprise from Drach, then the well-deserved verbal thrashing of Bebi in the latest chapter. I cannot speak enough about the attention paid to every interaction, place, food, beverage, item, you name it. All were described in perfect, succinct prose. I cannot recommend this shifter novel enough, and I'm waiting eagerly to see how this luscious attraction unfolds. "

Interesting take on the shifter concept

"Firstly I am enjoying the story for what it is, and if I had no idea of the 'shifter' phenomenon from other works, this would still work on it's own quite well because the worldbuilding is very strong and that is owing to pleasant balance of guiding the reader through what is clearly a rather complicated world and society. In general, I think the author strikes a good balance of allowing the reader to experience Asena's reality and not feeling the need to spoon-feed the reader with every detail. As such the story keeps moving at a good pace as more and more about the world and it's characters is revealed to the reader. It's good writing in that respect. If you enjoy the 'shifter' concept, this little rebellious little cat is well worth joining on her journey."
