CHAPTER ONE

A Quite Arrival

Alison takes a deep, steadying breath as she steps out of the cab, her gaze sweeping across the unfamiliar neighbourhood before her. The modest bungalow standing proudly in the distance represents a long-awaited chance for a fresh start, an opportunity to finally leave the burdens of her past behind and embrace the promise of a new chapter in her life. With a renewed sense of determination, she squares her shoulders, her eyes filled with a glimmer of hopeful anticipation as she takes in the sights and sounds of her new surroundings, eager to uncover the possibilities that lie ahead.

Alison approaches her new front door, key clutched tightly in her hand. She can’t help but feel a mix of emotions - excitement at the prospect of a fresh start, but also a tinge of trepidation as she embarks on this next chapter of her life. Taking a deep breath, Alison unlocks the door and steps inside, her gaze immediately drawn to the cosy, inviting interior. She pauses for a moment, taking it all in, already picturing how she might arrange her belongings and make this modest bungalow feel like a true home. “Well, this is it,” Alison thinks to herself, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. Despite the lingering memories and nostalgia for her old life, she is determined to embrace the possibilities that lie ahead, to create a haven of her own in this new neighbourhood.

As she begins to unpack her belonging, Alison can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia for her old home, her old neighbourhood parties and get togethers. She wondered to herself if this new community will accept her the same way her old one did, will they invite her to their community meetings? will they support her the same way. Fear started to find its way into her thoughts, fear of the unknown a fear of rejection, what if she doesn’t fit in with them? She quickly brushed away the thoughts and took in a deep breath then continued to unpack.

Alison’s eyes lit up as she stepped into the kitchen, her favourite place to be. “I can’t wait to start baking in here!” she exclaimed, her voice brimming with excitement. The kitchen was truly a dream come true - spacious, with a large island and a window above the sink that offered a picturesque view of the backyard. This was the kind of kitchen she had always envisioned for herself, ever since she was a little girl.

As a child, Alison had spent countless hours daydreaming about the day when she would have a kitchen like this, a place where she could pour her heart and soul into cooking and baking for the family she hoped to have one day. The idea of preparing delicious meals and sweet treats in such a beautiful, functional space had been a driving force behind many of her life decisions. Now that she was finally standing in this kitchen, a sense of profound joy and fulfilment washed over her.

She could almost see herself moving effortlessly around the gleaming countertops, mixing batter, chopping vegetables, and filling the air with the tantalizing aromas of freshly baked goods. This kitchen represented not just a physical space, but a manifestation of her dreams and aspirations - a place where she could nourish both her loved ones and her own creative passions. Alison couldn’t wait to start making this kitchen her own, to fill it with the laughter, love, and memories that she had envisioned for so long, she was determined to embrace this new chapter of her life.

A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. She opened the door to find her neighbour, Matt, standing there with a warm smile and a plate of freshly baked brownies in his hands. “Hello there, my name is Matt and I’m your new neighbour,” he said, introducing himself. “I noticed you moving in, and I wanted to be the first to welcome you to the neighbourhood.”

Alison was touched by the kind gesture, and as she accepted the plate of brownies, their hands brushed briefly. “Thank you, that’s very thoughtful of you,” she replied, her voice soft and a little shy. As Alison gazed at Matt, she couldn’t help but notice how handsome he was, with kind eyes and a gentle demeanour that put her at ease.

Unsure of how to proceed, Matt started to turn and head back to his own house, but Alison found herself calling out, “Would you like to come in for some lemonade? ” The words tumbled out before she could overthink it, and she was surprised by her own boldness. But there was something about Matt’s warmth and the way he had welcomed her so genuinely that made Alison want to spend more time with him.

Matt paused and turned back, his face lighting up with a smile. “I’d love that, thank you,” he replied, and Alison stepped aside to let him enter, her heart fluttering with a mix of nerves and excitement as she ushered him into her new home.

“I’m so sorry I haven’t unwrapped my couches yet,” Alison said, a hint of embarrassment in her voice. “I’ve been so focused on getting the kitchen ready that I totally neglected the other areas of the house.” Matt didn’t seem to mind at all and surprised her by casually plopping down on the floor, chuckling lightly. It was as if they had known each other for years; there was no room for awkwardness between them, he was so kind.

Alison proceeded to retrieve a pitcher of lemonade from the fridge, apologizing that she hadn’t had time to make any herself. “That’s okay, I can’t bake to save my life, so I always just end up buying the brownies,” Matt replied with a chuckle. Alison laughed lightly at the thought of him regularly stocking up on baked goods, wondering if they were part of his personal “stash.” The easy banter and shared laughter made her feel at ease, as if she had found a kindred spirit in her new neighbour. She couldn’t help but admire the way Matt’s eyes crinkled when he smiled, and the genuine warmth that radiated from him.

As they sipped their lemonade and munched on the brownies, Alison couldn’t help but feel a sense of comfort and belonging. The initial formality of their interaction had given way to a more genuine connection, and she found herself grateful for the chance to forge this unexpected friendship with her neighbour. She couldn’t help but wonder where this newfound connection might lead, but for now, she was content to simply enjoy the moment and the companionship of this warm and understanding individual who had so unexpectedly become a part of her life.

As Matt began to leave, he turned to Alison and encouraged her to never hesitate to ask for help if she ever needed it. They had talked at length about the neighbourhood, and he had taken the time to share valuable insights, telling her what to expect and what to look out for. Alison had felt so content and at ease in his presence, finding solace in their budding friendship. However, as Matt was walking away, she couldn’t help but notice the simple wedding band that adorned his finger, and in that moment, Alison knew that their relationship could be nothing more than that of friendly neighbours. The realization stirred a mixture of emotions within her, as she found herself torn between the comfort of his company and the knowledge that his heart belonged to another. Still, Alison couldn’t help but feel grateful for the support and understanding he had already shown her, and she knew that even if their connection could never blossom into something more, she had found a kindred spirit in this quiet, caring man.
