Short Story
There once lived a small black and tan rabbit with black spots, she lived in an old apple tree in her burrow, that was in the middle of a field of flowers as far as the eye could see.
Every day at the break of dawn she would see a grey wolf up on the hill, always looking her way then disappearing behind the trees.
Until one day while out in the field she saw a shadow appearing from behind her, she turned around and saw that it was her mystery wolf.
The grey wolf looked at the small rabbit with its twitching nose. he slowly laid down, "Why aren't you running away?" he asked.
"Why would I run away? You're not going to hurt me." She said with a smile. The wolf turned his head at her, "How are you so sure little rabbit? I'm much bigger than you and everyone is afraid of me." "I'm not afraid of you, and if you wanted to hurt me you would have already." The wolf said nothing and just stood up and walked away.
A week passed until she saw the shadow again, he sat down staring once again at her, "You fascinate me little rabbit." Those words surprised her. "Shocked are you little rabbit? Why are you always alone, it's not safe."
"Well, you see I'm the smallest and only rabbit of this color and because of that the others aren't nice to me, they shut me out so I lefts, I have the whole field to myself.: She said with a smile.
"I see." The wolf said, and just like before he stood up and left. What a strange wolf, she thought but she liked him.
The following night she waited outside while the sun was setting, she smiled as she saw her mystery wolf coming down from the hill to her. "Why are you still outside cotton tail? It's not safe." He said standing Infront of her. "I know but tonight is special, sit next to me, you'll see in a minute."
The sun disappeared behind the hill as nighttime fell over the valley. Suddenly she dashed off into the long grass and the ground lit up with the glow of fireflies. He never saw anything like this in his whole life, "What are you waiting for!" She yelled out from a distance. He jumped into the grass and started to run, together they lit up the night.
She fell on her back, and he joined her, they stared at the sky together as there were more fireflies than stars. " Thank you cotton, tail, I had fun tonight." "You're welcome. Can I ask you something Mr. Wolf." He looked at her and nodded, "Are you also alone?" For a moment it was quiet, "I'm a lone wolf you could say, has been for a long time. I don't get along with others because they are afraid and those who aren't afraid don't like me very much."
"But I like you." She said looking at him. He stared at her with eyes widened, he the suddenly stood up, "I have to go, and you have to go home, quickly!" She smiled and hoped along as he went back up the hill.
The nights turned cold, and the days shortened, no sign of him not even up on the hill. She was very worried, she wished she could go and search for him, but she didn't know the valley very well.
One day after the first heavy snowfall she was laying in the suns, she saw the glimpse of a shadow, she was so happy and quickly turned around, but her joy was instantly turned to fear, for she wasn't looking into the eyes of her mystery wolf, she was looking into the cold dark eyes of three other wolves.
"What do we have here boys, a little rabbit all on her own, perfect for today." The one Infront said. In a second, she ran off as fast as she could. "Get that rabbit!" She heard them yell as they started chasing her.
They would catch her if she stayed in the field, so she ran up the hill not knowing what is beyond it. She only saw white in front of her, everything was covered in snow.
They were close on her tail, but she kept running, she wasn't the perfect color to hide, she was easy to spot. She ran and jumped over piles after piles of snow, when suddenly she fell into a hole and snow followed her, covering her in white. Her heart was racing, she saw the figures through the snow above her. "Where did she go? Split up and look!" She heard them scatter off, but she stayed put.
Awhile passed as it began to turn dark above her, she was too tired and too cold to move. she then suddenly saw a figure above her digging down, she gathered all her strength to move when she gets the chance, but she saw eyes, it was the eyes of her mystery wolf, she knew she was finally safe. He gently picked her up and carried her off, on the way she closed her eyes and fell asleep.
She felt warmth around her, it was so nice, it has been a long time.
She wiped her eyes and slowly opened them, she saw sunlight and that she was next to her wolf, his tail curled around her.
He was staring at her, "What's wrong?" She asked. "You had me worried cotton tail, you have been asleep for two days. She looked at him with big eyes, "Sorry, I didn't mean to be a problem." "You don't have to be sorry; I am the one that should be saying sorry. I wasn't here to protect you. You see I was caught by humans; I was stuck in a trap, and they took me far away. One night there was a storm, the humans were running around, there was a loud noise and a red light, I heard a loud pop then I saw I could escape, so I just ran, ran back here that is when I saw you and what was happening." "Did they hurt you?" "You don't have to worry about me." He said. "But I was worried when I didn't see you." She said moving closer to him. He smiled. "You know you're not going to leave my sight from now on." "Same goes for you Mr. Wolf." She said with a big smile.
"Go back to sleep." He said curling up around her, and both fell asleep in the sun.
And they lived happily together in the meadow, never leaving each other's side.
