Chapter 1 - The Cataclysm

“When will you be back, Nox?” Michelle asked, her rounded stomach preceding her as she came out of our house to see me leave. My beautiful wife is glimmering with summer sweat as stands there waiting for me to leave. She is 7 months pregnant and about to give birth to my perfect little twin girls.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can my love.” I replied, smiling at the thought of her waiting for me. “Today is a big day for us. Just you wait.” I promised.

As I climbed into the transport vehicle, I couldn't shake the image of Michelle standing there, her hand gently resting on her belly. I knew she was curious about what made today special. My heart ached to tell her, but I wanted it to be a surprise. The vehicle's engine roared to life, and I began the journey to the crystal mine, a place that had become a second home to me over the years.

The crystal mine was a vital source of healing crystals, known throughout the galaxy for their remarkable properties. People traveled from distant planets just to obtain these rare gems, and our planet's economy thrived because of them. Today, however, was going to be different. I had discovered a particularly rich vein of crystals, and I was determined to extract them efficiently and quickly. If everything went according to plan, this haul would secure our future, providing enough wealth to ensure a comfortable life for our growing family.

As I arrived at the mine, I was greeted by my crew, a group of skilled miners who had become like brothers to me. We shared a mutual respect and camaraderie, born from years of working side by side in the depths of the mine. Today, I could see the anticipation in their eyes, mirroring my own excitement.

"Morning, Nox!" called out Jareth, my second-in-command. "Ready for the big day?"

"More than ready," I replied with a grin. "Let's get to work."

We descended into the mine, the air growing cooler and more humid as we went deeper. The walls glittered with embedded crystals, their soft glow illuminating our path. I led the way to the new vein, my heart pounding with the thrill of the discovery.

"Alright, everyone," I said, turning to address the crew. "Today, we're going to make history. This vein is unlike anything we've seen before. Let's get these crystals out and secure our future."

The team set to work, carefully drilling around the crystals to avoid damaging them. I monitored the progress, ensuring everything was proceeding smoothly. Hours passed, and the pile of extracted crystals grew larger. I could already see the gleam of wealth in our future.

As the day wore on, I decided it was time to implement my secret plan. I had brought along a powerful explosive device, designed to blast through the toughest rock and expedite the extraction process. I had tested it on smaller sections of the mine with great success, and I was confident it would work here as well.

"Jareth," I called out, beckoning him over. "I'm going to set up the charge. Keep the team clear of this area until I'm done."

Jareth nodded, trusting my judgment. I carefully placed the explosive device in the heart of the vein, making sure it was positioned for maximum effect. Once everything was in place, I retreated to a safe distance and signaled the crew to do the same.

"Everyone clear?" I shouted, receiving affirmative responses. "Alright, here goes nothing."

I pressed the detonator, and the explosion echoed through the mine. The ground shook beneath our feet, and dust filled the air. I shielded my eyes, waiting for the debris to settle. As the dust cleared, I saw the newly exposed crystals glistening in the dim light. My plan had worked perfectly, or so I thought.

But then, something unexpected happened. The crystals began to emit a strange, pulsating glow. I felt a sudden rush of heat, and a sense of dread washed over me. These crystals, when exposed to high heat, were not stable. They were on the verge of a catastrophic reaction.

"Get out! Everyone, get out now!" I screamed, waving my arms frantically. The crew didn't hesitate, scrambling for the exit as fast as they could. I turned to follow them, but then I remembered Michelle and our unborn daughters. I couldn't let this explosion reach the surface and endanger them.

With a surge of adrenaline, I ran back towards the crystals. The heat was unbearable, and the pulsating glow intensified. I knew what I had to do. I had to contain the explosion, no matter the cost. I threw myself over the crystals, using my body as a shield. The blast erupted around me, and I felt the searing pain as the energy coursed through my veins.

Time seemed to slow down, and I saw my life flash before my eyes. Memories of Michelle, our wedding day, the moment she told me she was pregnant, and the dreams we had for our future. I couldn't let it end like this. I had to protect them.

As the explosion reached its peak, I felt a strange sensation, as if the energy was being absorbed into my body. The pain subsided, replaced by a feeling of warmth and light. The crystals' healing properties were merging with my very being, altering me in ways I couldn't comprehend.

When the light finally faded, I found myself lying on the ground, the mine around me in ruins. Miraculously, I was still alive. I stood up, feeling an odd sense of vitality. I looked at my hands, which were glowing faintly with the same light as the crystals.

I made my way back to the surface, unsure of what had happened but knowing that I had to see Michelle. As I emerged from the mine, the crew gathered around me, their faces filled with astonishment.

"Nox, are you alright?" Jareth asked, his voice trembling.

"I... I think so," I replied, still trying to process everything. "The crystals... they did something to me. I absorbed their energy."

As I walked towards home, I realized the full extent of what had happened. The explosion had not only destroyed the mine but also the planet itself was trembling as if on the verge of collapse.

As I neared our house, I saw it in the distance, untouched by the devastation but eerily quiet. My heart pounded in my chest as I rushed towards it. I threw open the door and found Michelle lying on the floor, the life already gone from her eyes. The shock and grief hit me like a physical blow, knocking the breath from my lungs. I fell to my knees beside her, cradling her lifeless body in my arms.

Our daughters, our beautiful unborn daughters, were gone too. The explosion had taken everything from me. The crystals had given me immortality, but at the cost of my family.

Tears streamed down my face as I whispered apologies to Michelle, my heart breaking with every word. I had been so eager to secure our future that I had destroyed it instead. The weight of my actions crushed me, and I realized that immortality was not a gift but a curse. I would live forever, carrying the burden of my mistake and the loss of my family.

I stood up, the light in my hands dimming as the reality of my situation set in. I had to leave this place, this reminder of my failure. I gathered a few belongings and began to walk away from the ruins of our home, my heart heavy with grief and guilt.

The planet's surface began to fracture and crumble, sending debris into the atmosphere. The tremors grew more intense, and I realized there was no escape.

The ground opened up beneath me, and I fell into a chasm, the searing heat and molten rock below threatening to consume me. But instead of being burned alive, the energy of the crystals within me protected me, keeping me safe as the world around me disintegrated.

As the planet shattered into countless fragments, I was flung into the void of space. The force of the explosion propelled me away from the debris, sending me hurtling through the cosmos. My body, now immortal and imbued with the energy of the crystals, floated aimlessly in the vast emptiness.

I stared at the remnants of my home, now reduced to a scattering of rocks and dust. The pain of my loss was overwhelming, an agonizing weight that crushed my soul. Michelle, my daughters, our future—everything was gone. I was alone in the universe, condemned to an eternity of solitude and regret.

The stars stretched out before me, cold and indifferent. I closed my eyes, tears streaming down my face, and thought of Michelle. Her smile, her laughter, the way she had looked at me with love and trust. I had failed her in the worst possible way.

"I'm so sorry, Michelle," I howled in grief. "I love you. I always will."

As I drifted through space, the memories of my wife and unborn children consumed me. The image of Michelle's lifeless body haunted my thoughts, a constant reminder of the price I had paid for my hubris. The pain was unbearable, a searing agony that would never fade.
