Chapter 1

It was a cold night, and Mateo felt the cold air rushing through the window. He laid on his bed, cold sensations running up his spine, but that wasn't what he cared about. His wife had died in a car accident, and he was the only one who lived. He looked at his ceiling, "Oh, Maria..." "You don't know how hard it is to not break down and cry every day, to not have a loved one I spent 10 years with to wake up to." He mourned and quickly sat up and grabbed a picture frame that was on his nightstand. He looked at it closely, tears streaming down his eyes onto his cheeks like a river.

It was their wedding picture, Mateo dressed nicely into a suit and tie, hair slicked back with a bright smile. His wife, Maria, standing next to him hugging him while holding a bouquet of flowers wearing a beautiful white wedding dress. He admired her, he admired how she was so kind to the world, even if others had hurt her. She was a wonderful person, Mateo would give everything up just for her. "Goodnight, love." he kissed the picture frame, and drifted off to sleep.

The sun shined brightly through the window onto his face. "Ughh..." Mateo slowly got up and rubbed his eyes. RINGGGG "Hello?" Mateo yawned. "Hey bud! Just letting you know that today we have a case to work on. I guess a woman got murdered in her house and no one knows who killed her." Mateo sipped his coffee, "Oh, damn." "Seems like a tough case." "You bet, hey man, meet me today at that famous coffee shop down your street." "Right, yeah, yeah I'll be there." Mateo gulped down his final sip of coffee before taking off.

"Hey man!" Eric got up from his chair and fist bumped - hugged Mateo. "Hey, are those the documents to the case?" Mateo pointed down at the documents that were sitting on the table. "Yeah, thought maybe you'd like to investigate on the case a bit further. they're all of the information we have so far." "I'll take a look at them." Mateo studied the documents and folders carefully. He opened up a folder that had three photos in it. "Man that's a lot of gore."

Mateo put the photos back in the folder before taking a seat on the booth. "I got you a coffee, I didn't know if you'd like an americano. But hey, give it a shot man." Mateo responded, "Shoot, I already had a cup at home" "That's alright." " Well, the murder had to have been a homicide." Eric looked at the documents while continuing, "Here, you can see the knife right besides the woman."

Eric pointed at a photo that showed a woman with blood, so much blood to the point Mateo couldn't even distinguish the photo. Mateo talked off topic for a while before deciding to head off. "Hey, it was nice seeing you." Mateo smiled, "I agree, have a good one man." Mateo patted him on the back. "BURN IT DOWNN" Mateo blasted the music in the car while singing along. BUMP "Hey what was that?" he thought to himself.

Mateo pulled over to check what he might have ran over. "I'll take a look, got dan it where's my flashlight?" He juggled through his bag until he eventually found it. He opened the door and slowly moved from the front to the back studying the tires closely. There was nothing, no animal, no human, nothing. "Might've been a nail." He got on the road and looked at his tires. "Urgh. I don't see anything, I'll check more tomorrow." Mateo talked out loud to himself until he headed back into the car and drove off to his house.
