Chapter 1
Keep one foot in front of the other.
Keep walking.
Be careful.
My eyes scanned the uneven, slippery surface as I crossed the rocky terrain. The ground beneath me was a mixture of mud and shattered debris—fragments of what used to be homes, vehicles, and trees, all washed away like they were nothing. Each step felt treacherous, as if one wrong move would send me sliding into an abyss of destruction.
Keep moving.
I glanced up at the sky. The horizon was fading into hues of deep purples and blues as the sun dipped lower, its light barely reaching over the jagged landscape. The air grew colder, biting at my exposed skin. My breath came out in visible puffs, and I pulled my jacket tighter around me. I had no idea where I was headed, only that I had to find shelter before nightfall.
“Fuck,” I muttered under my breath. My throat was dry from dehydration and the dust that lingered in the air.
A hurricane. In the middle of nowhere.
The irony was, I had moved inland—500 miles away from the coast—specifically to escape storms like this. I wanted to be far away from the relentless fury of nature, from the violent winds and rising waters that could sweep away entire lives. Yet here I was, in the aftermath of a storm I never thought would reach me.
I used to live in Florida, for over a few years. I loved it there—the vibrant sunrises over the Atlantic, the soothing lull of the waves against the shore. The beach had been my sanctuary, a place where I could leave my troubles behind and feel the world wash away in the cool, salty water. The feel of sand beneath my feet, the sun warming my skin, the smell of the ocean breeze—these were memories I used to cherish.
Until the day the ocean swallowed my life whole.
I kept climbing over the rocky terrain, forcing myself to push forward. My legs ached, my lungs burned, but I didn’t have a choice. I needed to find a house—any structure that wasn’t reduced to rubble, a place that could provide even a moment of safety. Every house I passed was shattered, mere skeletons of what they once were. Roofs caved in, windows blown out, walls torn apart as if by a giant hand.
Eventually, I found myself standing on a flat surface—an overlook that stretched out above a vast valley. For a moment, I paused. The sky above was painted with vibrant streaks of red and pink, the clouds illuminated like glowing embers. It was strange, almost surreal, how something so beautiful could exist in the midst of all this destruction.
But then my gaze fell to the valley below.
What had once been a thriving town was now an endless sea of devastation. Buildings lay crumbled, cars overturned, trees snapped like twigs. And yet, in the middle of it all, something caught my eye—a thin, spiraling column of black smoke rising into the darkening sky.
Survivors.
I froze, my heart pounding in my chest.
There were survivors.
Without hesitation, I began my descent into the valley. Every step down the rocky slope was a gamble, but I had no time to be careful now. The smoke was my beacon of hope, and I wasn’t going to let it slip away.
