sam
I met Sam a few months ago. He was super cute with an amazing personality. He was hilarious, eccentric, brilliant, and empathetic. I fell in love with him the moment I met him.
“You’re such a good singer, Dawn.” Sam whispered in my ear as he approached me in the hallway after rehearsal. I felt my heart leap up in my throat and start pounding rapidly. My legs were Jell-O now, and I felt my eyes blink quickly.
“Thanks Sam, you are too.” I say with a slight giggle running my finger through my overgrown bang in my face.
“What’s your favorite song we worked on?” He asked me quizzically. His brows furrowed together, and my eyes danced on them as he spoke.
“I mean, Mr. Saden told me to cry during ‘Home’ so, I guess that must be my favorite.” I laughed as I spoke. Mr. Saden was the director of the school musical Sam, and I were in together. We were in the school production of Beauty and the Beast. He played Gaston, and I played Belle. We were going on Fall break, and I wouldn’t see him for a while.
“You can’t just cry on command.” He said giving me a nudge. I could cry on command, but I couldn’t decide if that was a real attractive quality, so I kept it to myself.
“He probably could. He has so much to cry about in his sad, miserable life.” I remarked. Sam burst out laughing.
“That’s what I told Mr. Saden!” Sam yelled as we were walking through the halls.
“Shush! He’s going to hear you!” I giggled and admired Sam’s wistful smile.
“Sue me!” He says with a joyous laugh. I laugh too and cling my script to my chest.
“We don’t have rehearsal for two weeks.” I told him with a sigh. My sorrow snuck up on me, I wasn’t planning to think about it until after school. Because I was going to miss rehearsal, but I was going to miss Sam the most.
“I know,” he sighed with a heavy breath. He straightened up and gave me his beautiful white toothed smile. “I mean, you have my number, text me.” He told me showing his dimples. I smiled. “If you want! Obviously only if you want.” He said and looked down at the ground and ran a hand through his strawberry hair.
“Oh, I mean yeah!” I said with a little smirk. He gave me a look.
“I’ll see you around Dawn.” He laughed a little and he walked over to his sister to take home. I watch him walk off, my heart soaring high in my chest. When he walked out of school, it dropped. I was going to miss him so much.
“Whoa Dawnnnn, I saw that.” My best friend Emma said rounding the corner. Her golden hair falling over her shoulders.
“Oh my gosh, was I that obvious?” I ask nervously. She walks by me looping her arm through mine.
“No, but he was.” She snickered and pulled me against her. We walked over to our school lobby’s cafe. They served frappes there, and that’s what we always drank after rehearsal days.
“You free to hang out tonight?” She asked me. I gave her a sad puppy face.
“I can’t. My Mom is making me hang out with these old family friends tonight.” I told Emma and rolled my eyes. She groaned and rolled her eyes too.
“We never get to hang out!” She sighed, and we approached the counter.
“Two caramel frappes please.” I told the woman at the counter.
“Whip or no whip?” She asks.
“Whip obviously.” I tell her and me and Emma laugh. She looks at us through her glasses, blinks, and then dials something into the cash register.
“Is that all?” She asks.
“Yep.” I tell her.
“That’ll be $25.” She told us. I give her a strange look.
“I’ve ordered this a million times. It’s always 12.23 and I always thought that was expensive. Why are you telling me it’s over twice as much?” I ask her crossing my hands over my chest. She blinks twice at me.
“Look kid, we upped the prices. $7 plus tax for each, $3 for whipped cream, and for a non plastic all organic straw $2.” She said annoyed.
“Well, non organic straw and no whip.” I scoffed.
“Fine. Don’t have to be such a bitch.” She murmured.
“Excuse me?” I raise my voice now. She rolls her eyes.
“Who’s your manager?” Emma asks folding her hands across her chest.
“Ok, I’m refusing to serve you two. From now on, you’re banned from the province cafe.” She scolds and turns her head on us.
“Fine! Forget it.” I scoff. Emma and I turn our heads and walk in the other direction.
“What a mean worker.” Emma says.
“Yeah, I’m so mad. I guess I’ll just see if I can get one at Starbucks.” I sigh.
“It doesn’t hit the same though!” Emma groans. I shrug.
“Nothing I can do.”
......................................
“Is everyone ready for the Littles?” My mom hollers to me and my siblings.
“Yeah!” My little sister Jane yells out. My brother, Griffin, is fiddling for his video games he always brought over to play with the oldest Little, Beckham. Beckham had been my childhood crush for six years. He was gorgeous. He had golden, hazel eyes and messy dark hair, with freckles sprinkled over his nose, and full red lips. Not to mention, he was totally jacked for a tenth grader. I hadn’t seen him in over half a year since he switched schools. Obviously, in that time period I had gotten over him. I met Sam. Beckham was always much more of a jerk than Sam, and even though Beckham was funny, he was mostly insensitive. The other Little was Lydia. Lydia was one of my friends, and was Beckham’s younger sister. Jane and I played with Lydia whenever we went over, and let the boys do their own thing. My older sister, Claire, never came with us to the Littles, she found it boring.
“Ok gang, c’mon! We gotta get there! We’re gonna be late!” My mom said putting aluminum foil over the casserole she was bringing.
“Give me a few minutes!” I say, and bolt upstairs to finish my makeup. I smear lip gloss over my lips. I had gotten my braces off in the past seven months, lost a lot of my baby fat, and learned how to do my makeup properly. I also got tits...and an ass. But I don’t care about that! Because I like Sam. I like Sam. Sam’s laugh filled my ears as I thought about him. I danced around in my room totally saturated in the idea of him.
