Chapter 1

The lights of the upper city were reflected in the polished surfaces of the skyscrapers as Zephyr hurried through the sterile corridors of the government building. His communications implant had received an urgent message a few minutes ago: An extraordinary council meeting had been called, and his presence was required.

Zephyr felt his muscles tense under his customised uniform. Such last-minute summonses were rare and usually signalled a serious crisis. As an elite soldier and advisor to the Minister of Security, he was used to crises, but this time the air seemed to vibrate with tension.

As he approached the meeting room, he noticed the increased presence of security forces. Face scanners recorded his identity as he walked through the heavy security doors.

Inside, the familiar sight of the most powerful people in the domed city awaited him: councillors in their shimmering robes, high-ranking military officers and influential industrialists.

Zephyr took his seat, his eyes automatically scanning the room for potential threats - a habit he never broke.

The security minister nodded briefly to him, his expression serious and tense. As the doors closed and the holographic displays came to life, an eerie silence descended over the room.

The Supreme Council stood up, his face a mask of concern and determination. ‘Ladies and gentlemen,’ he began, his voice heavy with the weight of the words to come, ’we are facing an unprecedented threat. Our sensors have detected a massive disturbance in the lower levels of the city. It appears that someone is trying to infiltrate our central systems.’

Zephyr felt his body tense up. A security breach of this magnitude could only mean one thing: they were dealing with an exceptional hacker. Someone from the Undercity had dared to desecrate the hallowed halls of Upper City technology.

Zephyr leaned forward slightly, his senses heightened.

The Supreme Council continued, ‘Our technicians are working feverishly to locate and repel the source of the attack. So far without success. Whoever is behind this has capabilities beyond anything we've seen before.’

A murmur went through the hall. Zephyr observed how fear and anger were reflected in the faces of those present. He himself remained calm on the outside, but inside he was seething. This was more than just an ordinary hacker attack.

The security minister stood up. ‘We must act decisively. I suggest cutting all connections to the Undercity immediately and initiating a complete lockdown.’

‘And what about the workers we need to maintain our systems?’ one of the industrialists interjected, which was not surprising, even if the Upper City was reluctant to admit it. To a certain extent, they were still dependent on what happened in the Undercity.

‘Safety first,’ the minister replied sharply. ‘We can't afford for this attack to succeed.’

Zephyr listened intently as the discussion became more heated. He knew that a lockdown would have catastrophic consequences for the Undercity. At the same time, he could understand the Council's concern. A successful attack on their systems could destroy the fragile balance of the entire city.

Suddenly the lights flickered. The holographic displays distorted for a moment before stabilising. A collective gasp went through the room.

The Supreme Council raised their hands placatingly. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, we must remain calm. Commander Zephyr,’ he addressed him directly, ’you are our expert in crisis situations. What do you suggest?’

All eyes turned to Zephyr.

He stood up slowly, his mind racing as he weighed up the possible consequences of each decision. The future of the city depended on his next words. ‘By your leave, Supreme Council,’ he began, his voice calm and authoritative, ’I suggest we take a two-pronged approach. On the one hand, we need to strengthen our defences and isolate the critical systems. On the other hand, we need more information. I recommend sending a special team to the Undercity to locate the source of the attack and neutralise it as soon as possible. We can't allow something like this to happen, let alone be publicised.’

He paused briefly before continuing: ‘I am prepared to lead this mission personally.’

Zephyr felt the atmosphere in the room change. His words had had the desired effect - a mixture of relief and renewed focus spread among those present.

The Supreme Councillor nodded slowly. ‘A wise suggestion, Commander. Your experience and skills make you the ideal choice for this delicate mission.’

The Security Minister spoke up: ‘I agree. Zephyr knows the Undercity better than anyone else here. If anyone can track down the source of this attack, it's him.’

Zephyr bowed his head slightly in thanks as he mentally organised his thoughts. The Undercity was a dangerous terrain, a labyrinth of winding alleyways and hidden dangers. He would need all his skills and experience to complete this mission successfully.

‘I will assemble a team immediately and make the necessary preparations,’ Zephyr said. ‘We will proceed discreetly and bring the situation under control as quickly as possible. You can count on us.’

The Supreme Council nodded in agreement. ‘Very well. You have all the necessary powers, Commander. Do what it takes to eliminate this threat. The future of our city depends on it.’

As the meeting drew to a close, Zephyr felt the tension growing in his body. He knew that the coming days would be an enormous challenge. But at the same time, a strange sense of anticipation stirred within him. This was the reason why he had become an elite soldier - to protect the Upper City from danger, no matter where it came from or from whom.

As he left the hall, his mind was already beginning to plan the mission. Little did he know that this task would change his life forever and lead him down a path he could never have imagined.

Zephyr left the boardroom with determined steps, his mind already fully focussed on the mission ahead.

The corridors of the government building suddenly seemed narrower, as if they bore the weight of the responsibility that now rested on his shoulders.

Once in his office, he immediately activated the security protocols. Holographic displays flickered to life, showing detailed maps of the Undercity. Zephyr studied them, marking potential entry points and retreat routes. Procedures he had been doing for years. It was not for nothing that he led the elite force of the upper city as commander. It was more than that: the Council needed him.

As he assembled his equipment, his thoughts wandered to previous missions in the Undercity. He had seen things there that most of the inhabitants of the Upper City could not even imagine - the abject poverty, the desperate creativity, the raw power of survival. Part of him admired the ingenuity of the people down there, even if he would never admit it openly. If only to keep his job. Or his life.

Zephyr shook his head to dispel these distracting thoughts. He could not allow sentimentality to cloud his judgement. The safety of the Upper City was his top priority.

When he assembled his team, he chose each member carefully. He not only needed fighting strength, but also technical expertise and local knowledge. Each individual had to be able to adapt to the unpredictable challenges of the Undercity.

Just before they set off, Zephyr took one last look out of his office window. The glittering towers of the Upper City rose majestically into the sky, a symbol of order and progress.

Far below them, the Undercity lay in shadow, a place of secrets and hidden dangers. With a deep breath, he turned away. It was time to descend into the darkness and grab the threat by its roots, tearing it out of the ground before it destroyed everything he had built.
