Chapter 1: Shadows of Revenge

Dante stood in front of the large window, the city skyline spread out before him like a canvas of power and darkness. His fingers drummed against the cold glass, the faint reflection of his hardened face staring back at him, as though he were trying to see past the man he’d become. The soft hum of the city was drowned out by the storm raging inside his chest, a storm that had been building for years. His father’s death, his legacy, and his revenge. It was all he could think about.

He clenched his jaw, his thoughts shifting to the past—back to the moment his father had been ruthlessly gunned down in front of their family estate. The gunshots echoed in his mind, the memory as vivid now as it had been the night it happened. The cold, calculating eyes of his father’s murderer—Evan Volkov, the only son of the rival mafia boss—were seared into his memory.

His father had trusted the Volkov family. Trusted them enough to consider a truce. That trust had been shattered the moment Evan had pulled the trigger. Dante’s heart had turned to ice that night. The bloodshed and betrayal had been more than he could bear.

As the heir to the notorious De Luca mafia empire, it was his responsibility to avenge his father’s death. But it wasn’t enough to simply take out Evan. No, Dante needed to make him suffer. He needed to destroy everything that Evan cared about.

And that was when he heard about Lila Volkov.

She was beautiful, bold, and nothing like her brother. Dante had heard whispers about her—the youngest Volkov, untouched by the darkness that consumed her family. A wild spirit, carefree and full of life. She was the perfect leverage. The perfect pawn in Dante’s game of revenge.

Lila Volkov would pay for her brother’s sins.

The plan was simple: capture her, break her down, and use her as bait. Once she was in his grasp, he would send a clear message to Evan—there was no escaping the consequences of his actions. Dante had been careful with his preparations, leaving nothing to chance. He had made the arrangements, recruited trusted men to carry out the operation, and then... he waited.

The day the plan came to fruition, Dante sat in his office, his gaze focused on the quiet city below. He’d never been a patient man, but tonight was different. Tonight was the night everything changed.

His phone buzzed, breaking the silence.

“It’s done,” the voice on the other end said.

Dante’s lips curled into a grim smile. “Bring her to me.”

It wasn’t long before the Volkov heir was in his possession. Lila was defiant, her dark eyes flashing with a mix of fear and anger. She fought like an animal trapped in a cage, thrashing against the men who held her. But Dante wasn’t bothered by her resistance. He expected nothing less from her.

When he finally laid eyes on her, she was sitting in the chair in his office, her arms bound tightly to the armrests. Her hair fell in waves around her shoulders, her lips pressed into a thin line. Her clothes were torn, but there was something in her posture that commanded his attention, something fierce and untamed.

“Let me go!” Lila hissed, her voice sharp and full of defiance. She glared at him as though he were the one who had wronged her, not the other way around.

Dante stepped forward, his boots clicking softly against the polished floor. He leaned against the desk, studying her carefully. “You should be more careful with who you make enemies with, Lila.”

She lifted her chin, undeterred by his presence. “I’m not afraid of you,” she said, her voice steady despite the situation.

Dante chuckled darkly, the sound of it sending a chill down her spine. “You should be. You don’t know what I’m capable of.”

He could see the slight tremor in her hands, the way her jaw tightened in an attempt to control her fear. But there was more there. More than just the fear of being captured by a man like him. There was something else—something he couldn’t quite place. It intrigued him.

“You’re not the first person I’ve taken,” Dante continued, his voice low and dangerous. “And you won’t be the last. But you’re different, Lila. I’m not just doing this for money or power. I’m doing this because I need you to understand the cost of betrayal.”

Her gaze softened, just for a moment, as if she were trying to understand what he meant. “I don’t understand,” she said, her voice quieter now. “I haven’t done anything to you.”

Dante straightened, his mood shifting in an instant. “Your brother has. And that’s all that matters.”

He turned away from her, walking back to the window. The city lights flickered below, a constant reminder of the empire he controlled. “You’re going to help me make him pay, Lila. I won’t kill him. Not yet. But you’re going to watch as I destroy everything he cares about. Starting with you.”

Her eyes burned with defiance again, but there was a flicker of something else. Fear, yes, but also curiosity. “You’re a monster,” she spat.

Dante turned back to her, his expression unreadable. “I’m your monster now.”

The hours dragged on as Dante worked tirelessly, planning his next move. He knew he needed to break her—to make her feel the weight of what her brother had done. But even as he plotted, something inside him nagged at him. Something told him that this wasn’t going to be as simple as he’d thought.

Lila was more than just a pawn. She was more than the revenge he’d been craving. And that terrified him.

As night fell and the city below him buzzed with life, Dante couldn’t shake the feeling that his carefully laid plans were about to unravel. The sight of Lila, fierce and defiant, haunted him. There was something in her eyes—a strength he hadn’t expected.

It was then that he realized: revenge wasn’t going to be as sweet as he’d imagined.
