(SHORT STORY) Voldemort's Return Succeeds...
Important things to know before reading:
•Dumbledore knows about Voldemort's Horcruxes at this point
•Uses some headcanon / liberties of source material
•Takes place immediately when Voldemort promises to bring Harry's parents back for the stone, so prior knowledge to the first book/movie is required, recommended to have seen all of Harry Potter first though.
Story:
"I can bring them back..." Voldemort promised to the wavering Harry, who peered into the mirror of Erised at his parents, something he had been missing since Dumbledore took them away from him. Lily with her sparkling eyes looked as beautiful as ever, James stood tall and proud as the loved pair smiled at their son.
"He'll do the right thing..." was what their gaze told Harry, who clutched the stone in his pocket tightly. Their faces faded from the mirror as Harry's resolve hardened, Voldemort would never keep his promise. After all, he killed them.
"YOU LIAR!!!" Harry yelled, taking the stone out of his pocket and chucking it at a pillar of fire, hoping to destroy it.
Voldemort clicked his tongue.
"WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA!!!"
Quirrel caught the stone in mid-air, inches from the fire. Harry could only stand in a mixture of disbelief and horror as the stone levitated into the hands of Quirrel...
Voldemort chuckled condescendingly.
"We live in a world with magic, did you really think muggle tricks would work here, boy?" the dark lord sneered, Harry was just an Eleven Year-old boy, he could never have anticipated nor countered Voldemort's decades of experience at such a fragile age...
"At last!! The stone is mine!" Voldemort hoarsely cackled as Quirrel presented the stone to his master. Harry immediately sprinted towards Quirrel.
"Alarte Ascendare!!" bellowed the former Hogwarts professor, throwing Harry into the ceiling with a loud thud. Harry just barely managed to retain his consciousness from the impact, but he wished he hadn't, as the fall to the floor skyrocketed the pain in his weak body. His arm was broken, he could feel that pain shooting from his arm moreso than the bruised back and ribs. In excruciating pain but winded and unable to scream, Harry could only look through blurry vision and broken glasses at the horrifying scene taking place before him.
Voldemort's mouth had tripled in size as Quirell forced the stone inside his master's mouth. With a gnarly swallow, Voldemort's face contorted in agony.
"AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
Quirell began screaming as well, their conjoined body flailed around the room like a fish out of water, desperate to get into the sea. Harry's vision kept going black, but he could still make out the figure dancing around the room in pain.
Suddenly, their body began emitting several beams of light, filling the stone room with immense white light.
"HARRY!!" a distant voice yelled.
It was Hermione's voice, but the vibrations of the footsteps barreling towards him were not the feet of a little girl. They were more like a giant's feet.
"Gotcha!!" Hagrid said as he picked up the broken boy, who deeply moaned in pain. "Sorry, sorry, but I gotta get you away from that thing!" Hagrid nodded his head to the beam of light in the center of the room before heading towards the stairs, where a myriad of Hogwarts professors stood. Hermione tried to run to her friend but was stopped by several professors who kept her at the back for safety.
"Is there truly nothing we can do...?" Harry heard McGonagall plead to Dumbledore, who remained standing straight and unyielding.
"I'm... afraid not, Professor McGonagall... Voldemort is forcing the power of the Philosopher's stone to fuse with his own body... Such a forceful way to acquire the stone's true power, a power that goes beyond keeping someone alive for eternity..."
The headmaster's eyes betrayed his unwavering demeanour for only a second.
"There's a high chance that the power contained within the stone will destroy Voldemort for good..."
Everyone collectively gasped in relief until Dumbledore held up his hand, silencing them.
"However... Voldemort is using Quirrel's body as a conduit, there is a chance that Voldemort will be able to attain all the hidden power within the Philosopher's stone... and be returned... to his prime. The stone repairs fractured souls, nullifying horcruxes and other black magic in return for unimaginable power..."
Dumbledore looked at Harry potter, who was on the brink of passing out, then back to his fellow Hogwarts Teacher. "The stone isn't just a tool for immortality, no, the stone was formed when Nicolas Flammel distilled the concept of power itself... Such experimentation with magic was unheard of, nobody could have expected magic to interact with the fundamental principles of existence itself, and yet... It happened." Dumbledore looked at the beam of light, a slight smile that betrayed his curiosity and enamourment with Magic showed on his face.
"Just what is Magic...? If we can brew death, create liquid luck, and solidify power itself, then... Is there anything... We humans cannot do?" Dumbledore pondered, before the beam of light erupted, blowing out the fires and blowing everyone to the ground. Hagrid cushioned Harry in the fall, Dumbledore withstood the blast, but was forced onto one knee.
That's when it happened.
Everyone there felt it...
An overbearing sense of dread and pressure...
Scrambling to get up, people butted heads in the darkness. A flash of green light sped towards them.
"PROTEGO!!!" screamed Dumbledore, blocking the killing curse. Everyone was frozen in fear as the lights of the clashing spells faded and the pitch black returned.
Whoosh.
The room was lit up by red flames, casting the entire space in a deep crimson hue. The mirror of Erised gleamed in the light, reflecting a shadowy body. Everyone collected themselves and peered at the spot where Quirrel once stood.
In his spot was a man, draped in black robes. Short black hair parted to reveal Devilishly red, snake-like eyes atop pale white skin. A small straight nose and thin face was sunken in almost ghoulishly, accentuating his snake-like look. Despite his appearance, the man practically emanated poise, etiquette and power.
Dumbledore took a few steps forward. An uncharacteristic small growl escaped his lips.
"Hello... Tom..."
Tom Riddle took a deep breath through his nose, and let it out of his mouth, revealing a snake-like tongue. The young man wiggled his toes and flailed his arms. He cracked his knuckles and neck, the crunch echoed though the dead-silent room, but reverberated inside the hearts of the terrified onlookers. Tom stretched, eyeing Dumbledore the entire time.
"It... feelsss wonderful having a body to myself again..." Tom admitted, stretching his arms into the air.
Dumbledore took that chance.
"AVADA KADAVRA!!!"
The spell hit Tom Riddle square in the chest, causing him to fall backwards to the floor. You could practically hear everyone's racing hearts.
"Is he... dead...?" Hermione managed to squeak out from the back.
Tom Riddle pounced back up to his feet, a smirk on his face.
Dumbledore was unfazed. "PETRIFICUS TOTALIS!!" The old wizard Boomed.
"PROTEGO!!" the Young wizard countered with a smirk yet again.
"Tsk tsk tsk, I may be immortal, but I'm not immune to immobilising spells. You truly are a brilliant man, Albus." Tom bows, but Dumbledore remained static.
"REDUCTO!!"
This time, Dumbledore's spell hit and Tom's body was reduced to Ash. "INCENDIO!!" A grand stream of fire spewed from Dumbledore's Master wand that took the form of a great Lion, incinerating the Ash into mere particles. After a few minutes of this, Dumbledore stopped. It seemed as if nothing was left of Tom Riddle. A large hole full of molten stone was all that remained of the place where Tom once stood...
The air circled around Dumbledore, it carried flecks of dust, only atoms in size. They slowly settled around the hole, at first, one may think of it as just dust. But no, this was more. The dust kept gathering in the hole, more kept appearing, slowly getting more and more violent and fast. Eventually, the dust formed a human body, then clothes. Until Tom Riddle was looking up at the panting Dumbledore.
"That reminds me, how's Faukes doing?" The immortal wizard asked Albus sarcastically as he levitated out of the hole. Dumbledore just stared daggers at him as he caught his breath.
"So, what now, Tom? No matter how powerful you think you are, we will still stop you. It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow, but one day, I swear to you, we will defeat you." Dumbledore glared at his former student.
"My name isn't Tom Riddle anymore... It's Voldemort. The same name that people fear even saying will once more come to reign terror upon this wretched world..." Voldemort states proudly.
"Jesus, I don't remember him being this cocky, 'specially when Dumbledore is right in front a' him..." Hagrid let slip. Voldemort looked at Hagrid with a look of contempt. "Should not have said that..." Hagrid whispered to himself in a mix of embarrassment and fear.
Voldemort glided towards Hagrid, but was stopped by Dumbledore's outstretched arm. "You will not harm them while I am still alive..." Dumbledore threatened, pointing his wand directly into Voldemort's neck. Voldemort just smiled.
"I'm not afraid of you anymore..." he smiles. "I'm not going to kill you today. Nor anyone today. I am not even going to kill Harry Potter today. No..." Voldemort states, looking at the boy who lived. "You two are the final hopes of the world. It's best to crush you all once your eventual little resistance act comes to fruition..."
Even Dumbledore remained speechless. They all bore witness to the birth of a wizard so powerful, even Death could not stop him...
Voldemort stared at the comatose Harry in Hagrid's arms, fixating on his lightning-shaped scar, and smiled.
"I think I know what the new dark mark will look like now..." Voldemort chuckled before slowly and nonchalantly walking through the small crowd of people, who parted like the red sea, too terrified to scream.
Dumbledore watched as Voldemort, the world's most dangerous dark Wizard, freely roamed the halls of Hogwarts. A place he once heralded as the safest place in the world.
Never had he felt so terrible.
His plan with Harry and the horcruxes was now useless, Harry may as well be a regular student now. He has just used all his Magical might to destroy Voldemort, but it was in vain. Was Magic even something us humans were meant to abuse? He found himself wondering.
Alas, he shadowed the Dark lord throughout the castle, as the young man took in the nostalgia of his school years.
"You know, all this could have been avoided had you just hired me for the defense against the dark arts position..." Voldemort said to the great wizard behind him without turning around.
"You were not, and will never be, fit for the position." Dumbledore said promptly. Never in his life had Dumbledore felt so much fear or uselessness, but he wasn't going to sacrifice his integrity or morals even now.
"Heh, I guess that's obvious now..." Voldemort chuckled at the irony.
The pair reached the castle's giant open doors. Voldemort turned around to see that many of the Hogwarts professors and staff were behind Dumbledore. They would soon be standing behind me, he thought. Voldemort walked up to the only man he had ever feared, and smiled.
"I will return, Albus. In seven years, I'll have raised an army so vast, it'll utterly destroy everything you and the order and the ministry ever built... And I won't even have to lift a finger to do it..." Voldemort sneered.
Dumbledore, for the first time in his life, had to stop himself from throwing a punch.
"Or perhaps seven years is too long... After all, You're old, maybe you'll die before then... Not me, I'm immortal, what's seven years when you're gonna live forever?" Voldemort insidiously laughed before turning his back on the former most powerful wizard in the world and leaving Hogwarts.
Dumbledore turned to the crowd.
"Alert the ministry and gather up the 'Order of the Phoenix', we're not going down without a fight" he boomed before closing the giant doors. Dumbledore took one last look at the newly reborn Voldemort walking away before the giant doors banged shut.
Harry Potter's scar would never pain him again, but the weight of his guilt and failure over today would be an even deeper scar that would haunt him forever...
-The End-
Author note:
I'm sorry if characters are written weirdly, I haven't read the books in a long time so I don't really remember how they were written exactly, and I was aiming for a more "deconstructed" version of their characters where I get to show more about the sides they keep hidden from people, so in this case, it would be Dumbledore's FEAR and Voldemort's COCKINESS. And this goes for accentuating character aspects that aren't really explored, like how I wanted to show Harry's naviety since he's only 11 years old here, people expect him to act like a grown man all the time and while he's mature for his age, I wanted to show that he was still a kid inside, hence his bad decision-making with throwing the stone. I also wanted to explore how Dumbledore, the most powerful wizard, would react to being so utterly outclassed. As well as what a Voldemort restored to his prime (from when before he killed the Potters) along with gaining an unimaginable amount of power.
Since this is an alternative ending, I Toyed with the Philosopher's stone, adding my own headcanon to the story as I added quite a philosophical (pun intended) nature of magic to this story, as Dumbledore begins to wonder about the very nature of magic and if humans should even be worthy of wielding such power. Since things like time turners and liquid luck exist, I think my headcanon that the PS is the embodiment of power itself works and shouldn't really be any issue. Though it is just my fanfiction, I tried to be as faithful as possible when I could be. Harry is a little boy, he's not important to the story at all now that Voldemort no longer has Horcruxes (the PS erased them to fix his soul in order to make him fully immortal as Voldemort FUSED with the stone), so he's just a regular boy now who used to be famous. If this got popular, I may make sequels that explore that aspect of Harry and how the wizarding world would react to the return of Voldemort much earlier than the official version does.
Voldemort basically used Quirrel's body as a sacrifice to the stone and he got all the stone's power, so Quirell is dead.
Now that Harry is pretty much irrelevant now, that makes Ron and Hermione irrelevant now too. The only reason Voldemort wants to kill Harry is to show the world that there are no more heroes anymore. Voldemort has reached a level of power so great, that he doesn't even feel the need to conquer the world by himself. He'll just raise an army and let them do it. He's THAT powerful.
Just so you know, in this fanfic, People don't silent cast spells for dramatic effect, except for when Voldemort silent cast The killing curse during the blackout scene, as that's more dramatic.
This was just an idea I had In my head that I wrote in a few hours, it's not really anything serious and was just to get the idea out of my head, so it may have errors or unnatural flow and so on. I'd love to hear feedback and maybe If this got SUPER popular I'd consider making full on sequels... This is my first time making HP fanfiction to sorry for that.
Thank you for reading !!
