CHAPTER 1: MOMENT OF SHOCK

Ava’s POV

I shouldn’t be in here.

Lorenzo had rules.

Strict rules.

And the number one rule? Never step into his office when he’s not home.

But he wasn’t home.

And curiosity was a bitch.

I told myself I wasn’t doing anything wrong, that I wasn’t snooping.

Actually, I was looking for my birthday gift— the one he gave me a hint at last night.

“You’ll love it, Cara Mia,” he’d whispered to me.

“But you have to wait until tomorrow.”

Tomorrow was my birthday.

But patience had never been my strongest virtue. At all.

So, here I was, standing in the middle of his dark study, trailing my fingers over the oak desk while I searched.

That’s when I saw it—- a black leather-bound notebook.

It had no name on it, no inscription, no prints on it like every book should have at its front and back.

Maybe this was my gift?

Pfft. I don’t think so.

I was about dropping it back where I found it then thought; what if he wrote what he got for me in here.

So I opened it.

Now I have this bad habit of reading the page of a book starting from the middle lines, then the last lines before I would go over to read the first lines.

Don’t ask me why. I myself don’t know.

There was a whole list of names on a random page I opened, lots of them, each one in my boyfriend’s slanted handwriting.

My shoulders dropped, this was just a business ledger.

Beside every name was a date.

But…

Some had red slashes through them. Most of them did.

A sick feeling hit me in my stomach; these weren’t clients.

They were people killed.

Then my eyes went to the first lines of the page and my name was at the top of it.

‘AVA CARTER’.

I slammed the book shut, panting like I had run a race.

No. No. This had to be a mistake.

Lorenzo loved me.

He was obsessed with me.

I was the only woman in his life. The only person he trusted.

So why was my name on a list full of dead people?

Panic; a scream clawed up in my throat and I couldn’t even stop it, I was hyperventilating, everything was blurring up in front of me.

Suddenly, I heard the sound of a car pulling up outside.

Lorenzo was home.
